I was surprised once by my mother’s comments on abortion. My parents were fairly conservative both from small towns in Texas. She mentioned how foolish and unthinking people opposed to Roe V. Wade are. They have great concern for other peoples business, but lack concern for taking care of the unwanted, hungry children. This nation has plenty.
Growing up in a small town in 1940’s Texas my mother knew girls who resorted to back alley abortions or snuck off to Mexico. Not good memories.
I so very much appreciate your letter about your father and abortion (What it meant when abortion was illegal). I too remember almost losing a dear friend who I drove to an abortionist in Denver in the late 1960s. When we returned to Fort Collins late that evening, she began to hemorrhage. After an brief stay in ICU and more surgery, she recovered, thankfully. That event was so pivotal for me.
Your story about your father is poignant. I wish it was shared with a much wider circulation of mainstream newspapers for enlightenment of the rabid sentimentalists who scorn science and who symbolically annihialate women and their rights.
Again, thank you for writing about your story. As a volunteer who escorts women past the throngs of anti-abortion protesters, I can say with first-hand experience, how utterly critical it is that we all speak up and speak out.
Dr. Taylor’s article about his Dad was touching and says much about most of the people who go into medicine. Let’s hope this doesn’t change too much because doctors are no longer in charge. Ask your doctor.
In the 1940s over 1,000 women died each year and tens of thousands were injured in the U.S. from complications of illegal abortion. The passage of Roe v Wade in 1973 did not reduce the number of abortions performed, (1.3 million in 2000) it just made them incredibly safer (13 times safer than childbirth).
In the 70s I saw a patient who mentioned that she’d had an abortion (before it had been legalized) arranged by her Dad. I asked if he was a doctor. “No,” she said, “a judge.”
Since the late 50s it’s been possible to provide women a second chance to avoid abortion. Emergency contraception has stood the test of time in terms of safety and effectiveness, but like abortion has been polarized and politicized to divide and conquer voters at women’s expense. Let’s leave medicine in the hands of the doctors, like Dr. Taylor. They care.

I am a mother of four, step-mother of five, a grandmother and great-grandmother; I have not had an abortion nor can I imagine doing so. But, I graduated from an inner city high school in Detroit in 1956 and I remember being told that the first person to die from our class (the summer after graduation) had died from a “botched abortion.” I don’t even know if this was true but do know that it did happen to many others. Since that time, I have been pro-choice because for me the question has not been, “Should there be an abortion or not” but “Should a person who feels that desperate have a safe abortion in a clean setting or an unsafe one in a dirty alley?”
Thank you, it was an inspiration to hear from someone who remembers what it used to be like in the United States before Roe v. Wade.
The problem is they want every fetus to arrive, but they are unwilling to sustain them once they do arrive.
That sounds illogical to me, shouldn’t the goal be to see that everyone who is here is fed, clothed and sheltered. Shouldn’t that be our end goal, and can’t we work towards that effort. It seems more humane, than theirs.
Dr. Taylor expresses beautifully what I have felt all along about the abortion debate. I posit that it’s possible to be anti-abortion and pro-choice at the same time. The so-called “right-to-lifers” have every right to try to persuade young women against abortion, short of harassment and intimidation. By the same token, all information and safe options should be made known and fully explored by women trying to decide their future.
Failing to persuade someone against abortion, the right-to-lifers must accept that we have progressed beyond the back-alley abortions of the past. The safety of women should be their next highest concern and accept the CHOICE of the woman to abort a pregnancy. A safe abortion also guarantees the woman the ability to conceive a child later in their life, when they decide the time and circumstance is right.
It was 1957, done in “safety” on my parents’ dining room table. I am one of the lucky ones.
Please keep Roe v Wade alive. We can never go back.
What a wonderful site. Sometimes I get so overwhelmed and frightened with the direction we are headed. I didn’t grow up in the 60’s but it seems like we are experiencing a dose of policy and party decisions that mimic those we fought so hard to tear down during that era. One would think that women’s rights regarding abortion would be set in stone almost 40 years after abortion was made legal..the way child labor laws and anti-discrimination laws are now unquestionable. It’s wonderful to see that many people are “pro-choice” but the fact that the leaders of this country have an agenda that is almost completely the opposite of “for the people” shakes my understanding of home country- i’m ashamed to live here.
