Saving The Planet: Empty Gestures

What have you done today to reduce your carbon footprint. According to Nigel Pollitt most of us talk a good game but when it comes to reducing our contributions to global warming, we don’t actually do much.
But we, in our homes and on holiday, go on as before. The friend who raved about the Al Gore film whacks up the heat and wears a T-shirt indoors. I bang on about halogen downlights but do nothing about the picturesque but colossally leaky wooden sash windows in my picturesque but colossally leaky Victorian house. If my 1880s stained glass was under threat, I’d get a handgun. What’s going on?

When the efforts needed to combat massive global warming are compared to the Allied nations’ civilian and military efforts required to win WWII, it seems to be begging for a Churchill/Roosevelt-style of leadership. One which clearly defines the enemy, the grave consequences of inaction, and the sacrifices required to defeat the enemy. Great leadership is essential in motivating individuals to do their small part in taking on the enormous problem of global climate change. Unfortunately, this ‘enemy’ is ethereal, nearly-invisible, and totally pervasive throughout our world. Through our own daily actions we slowly create a capacity in nature to wreak havoc upon the air we breath and the climate we depend on for all our basic necessities and unnecessary extravagances.
If we don’t all begin to walk the talk of “sustainability,” the awesome forces of nature will begin to kick in, forces that haven’t been seen on this planet for 55 million years. With each passing decade, our procrastination sows the seeds of runaway climate change. If aliens were watching us, they’d have to be puzzled by their observation that humanity’s #1 priority was the permanent eradication of life on Planet Earth. Burning 16 million tons of coal per day (and 80 million barrels of oil per day) is sheer madness in the face of the IPCC’s latest reports, and yet, that is what homo sapiens is doing.
Free Public Transportation. Biggest bang for the buck. Low tech. Immediately addresses hundreds of problems. Think about it. No. Really think about it. Take a few minutes.
The planet doesn’t need to be saved. It can take of itself as it always has. What we’re doing is making it so that the planet no longer supports human life. So, maybe we should instead talk about saving our ability to keep living on the planet. We might start with two of our biggest problems:
1) Too many people; and,
2) Too much industry producing too many useless things.
Then we might move on to other areas, such as free press and fair elections.

In the parts of the world where leaders are elected by people , it gets down to the ‘peoples’ awareness or ignorance, doesn’t it, to responsibility of seeing that the proposed leader knows and cares of the condition of the planet, responsible use of Earth’s resources, to knowing the character of the individual, the beliefs, the heart of the one they are voting for, are his/hers beliefs based on personal needs, ( i.e. getting elected, using the office for personal gain), or is the bottom line the good of the planet. Sixty-two thousand Americans fought and died during the Civil War, for what President Abraham Lincoln later called: “a new birth of freedom”. [The Gettysburg Address, 19 November 1863] He closed the speech by affirming: “… that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth”.
In other words, “government” in this country is essentially “we the people”; it is not some second or third person, it is all of us.
This obligates each of us to instruct our governmental representatives on what actions we want them to take on our behalf, in this case, to ensure a sustainable future for us and our future citizens.
In review of in the article “Saving The Planet: Empty Gestures”, I believe we need today is not regulations and “tough action” by our government requiring massive reductions in greenhouse gas emissions under threat of law. What we need instead are greater financial incentives to motivate all of us to try harder at reducing our individual actions that burn fuel and emit global warming gases.
As suggested by Niles Pollitt, motorized transportation as one of the major individual contributors to global warming, from all the fuel burned in cars, SUV airplanes.
What government needs to provide, therefore, are meaningful incentives to individuals and families to motivate them to minimize their total driving and flying miles traveled throughout the year, and thus greatly reducing their annual emissions.
A few years ago after became aware of the global warming problem, I authored a strategy to address the largest contributors to global warming on a statewide basis in Wisconsin. I developed the strategy as an alternative for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s (DOT) major highway capacity expansion program. While my proposed plan was not considered for implementation, I believe the proposal has even more merit now because of the growing concerns about the build up of greenhouse gases emitted from fuel burning in the atmosphere and global warming.
Briefly, the strategy points to the government to create programs that reward citizens and families who conserve energy by offering financial incentives for them to minimize their driving and flying during the year, and to use less fossil fuel burning derived energy in their home. In this way, rather than the government spending the billions and billions of the dollars that are already being collected and spent on highway and airport expansions (via fuel taxes and motor vehicle license fees collections), instead offer back those dollars to the individuals and families who drive substantially less, fly less or not at all, and use significantly less fossil fuel burning derived electricity in their homes and businesses.
This would be a win-win-win approach and would be much more likely to motivate “we the people” to voluntarily reduce our driving, flying and energy consumption we each do over the year. For a proposed example, a link to my original paper that I proposed to my governmental representatives is supplied below.
