An escalation here, an escalation there….

[photopress:missile_bulava_bg.jpg,full,pp_image]The United States has reached agreements with Poland and the Czech Republic to build American anti-missile sites in those countries and although administration officials say the weapons systems are necessary to protect against long range Iranian missiles, the Russians definitely don’t see it that way. Russian Foreign Minister Mikhail Kamynin said today that his country will view the installations as an escalation of American military presence in Eastern Europe.
Placing US sites in the region “cannot be seen other than as a significant reconfiguration the American military presence in Europe,” Kamynin said. Despite US insistence that the plans pose no threat to Russia, he said that “we cannot fail to see the fact of a consistent imparting of a strategic component to American military forces in this region.”
In a statement on the Foreign Ministry’s website, Kamynin argued for a different approach toward threats–real and perceived–from Iran. “We believe that there are more optimal action schemes, primarily based on working out multilateral political approaches..”
In other word, diplomacy.
Ironically, some analysts say the ultimate goal for the US is to create an enemy out of Iran that is the same kind of enemy Russia was back during the days of the Cold War. The concept is laid out in a paper being circulated by Jimmy Carter’s former adviser on Iran, Gary Sick.
“The Holy Grail of U.S. Middle East policy has always been the hope of persuading both Arab and Israeli allies to agree on a common enemy and thereby relegate their mutual hostilities to a subordinate role,” Sick said.
The idea is that Iran is made to be that common enemy, and their Shia government is made to look threatening to not only Israel but the Sunni-Arab states in the region as well.
If it sounds like a complex and tangled web, it is. In an interview on Al Jazeera this afternoon, Afshin Molavi of the New America Foundation pointed out that Iran interests are intertwined with Iraq’s. And Tehran’s view of the war is that the US will leave eventually, and they’ll be left with the mess of whatever is left of Iraq.
