Anti-War Surge on Capitol Hill

[photopress:crowd.jpg,full,pp_image]It was a clear, beautiful day in Washington yesterday as a crowd that numbered in the tens of thousands and may have passed six figures gathered to protest the Iraq war. By all accounts the crowd was pretty diverse–young people, older people, Iraq vets in camouflage and kids in strollers.
With Mr. Bush facing low approval ratings and Congress continuing to debate the terms of a nonbinding resolution opposing the troop increase, grandmothers in wheelchairs, housewives pushing strollers, seasoned dissenters in tie-dye and veterans in uniform turned out to take their discontent to the streets.
“I grew up during the Vietnam War, but I never protested it and never had my lottery number called to go fight,” said David Quinly, a 54-year-old carpenter from Prairie Village, Kan., who arrived here Friday night with about 50 others after a 23-hour bus ride.
“In my view, this one is a war of choice and a war for profit against a culture and people we don’t understand,” Mr. Quinly said. “I knew I had to speak up this time.”

I was down there today and watched a very wide stream of marchers (3rd street and its sidewalks) go by for almost 2 hours, and I moved on before the end was in sight. This is the first place where I saw any news photo begin to give an idea of the magnitude of this event. Most seemed to intentionally give the impression of a small gathering. Although UFPJ may have slightly over-estimated the crowd, their 400,000 is more accurate than the common “tens of thousands” that the “news” services are parroting about.
This Protest will launch a thousand ships. Where the congress speaks loudly and carries a small stick the people remember. It is time for Congress to wake up and Roar! Thank goodness for Jane Fonda and those other so-called celebrities who are fearless and deserve our applause. Bring the troops home so they can go back to being citizens again.
Beware lest Bush cross the Rubicon.
The only way to stop Bu$h et al is to impeach. I fear bombing of Iran around April. I hope not but Congress is not going to cut funding. Impeachment is the only way to slow them.
Here in Albuquerque New Mexico, we were around 1000 to protest.
Impeachment..true that! Photos in NY Times true lies, by omission. What to do? The NY Times claimed to have seen the error of it’s ways before the war started, yet continue to downplay public sentiment. What we get instead is EPA library closing surge. Looking for some hope. The postings so far on youtube are nothing.
Did anybody watch Fox News report of the march? The whole time they were showing one war supporter with a sign that said “Fonda is a traitor”. They extensively interviewed him and followed him while just showing a few glimpses of the march and the crowd, specially at early hours when not many people had yet shown up. They totally distorted the picture and the message.
The extreme undercount is the result of underfunded, lazy news departments. AP said “tens of thousands”, and within an hour, every other news service ran with it; even the BBC. My own semi-scientific estimation produced 300,000. I also found it interesting that despite the fact that I was able to count exactly 37 anti-protest folks, they got about 10% of the coverage. Amazing. I wish we could get that kind of coverage. Imagine if 10% of the NYT or NPR consisted of stories from the CD Newswire!

We chanted prayers with others in Seattle, Washington in our walk for peace with possibly over a thousand marchers against the war and many signs for “Bring The Troops Home.” We had one arrest at one of two recruiting centers located in the Afro-American community. Lt. Watada spoke at the Langston Hughes Center after our walk of several miles which included all ages, races, and Iraq war veterans and Veterans for Peace. Lt. Watada speech was one of the most inspiring heart felt emotion with clear message to Americans of our crumbling democracy, Constitution and Bill of Rights. He is a real live ‘Profile of Courage’. His case comes up on Feb. 5th at Ft. Lewis and we expect thousands there too. Stay tuned the times are here for more action and less talk. Our tired eyes are finally opening…Thank you Lt. Watada

Thanks to the celebs who risked everything, but especially to Jane Fonda whose deeds and courage in the face of reactionary assaults on her person is an inspiration to us all. You did a lot to get us out of the Vietnam quagmire at great personal cost. We are amazed that you would jump right back into the fire, but grateful that you did. Peacemakers are demonized and warmongers are idolized. Mammon rules.
I was at the march in Washington DC and want to affirm much of what was written in this story. I have been to at least eight other major events in NYC and Washington DC, which means I have seen a few and am not prone to being overwhelmed by the magnitude of the demonstration. What I read in this story is accurate and I am so glad to see it after years of distortions or non-reporting. My estimation of the participant count was in the 300,000 - 400,000 range. What was different this time was my seeing many new faces on the bus; people that have never done this sort of thing before now. At the march I met people from all over the country and many had bussed in all night to be there to demonstrate. To top it off, I really like the picture of the march coming down Independence Ave., nice touch.
I don’t mean to offend, but I don’t really trust any of the estimates here more than I do the ones in the mainstream media. Of course, it wouldn’t surprise me if the AP underestimated the protest. I’d really like to see estimates tabulated by an official and impartial third party. But anyway, in the end the effect will be measured in what legislation is passed.
btw - the nytimes had the page number wrong for the continuation of their front page story. Who keeps track of these things?
It was our first march so we can’t give any comparison experiences, but there were a lot of people. This article had the only picture that I’ve seen that gave any idea of how many people were there. The best pictures for estimating the crowd would have to come from the government helicopter that constantly circled the Mall keeping an eye on us.
Greatest photo I’ve seen so far. I wish I could have been there. They say when you contact your congressman or write a letter to the editor of a newspaper, they consider your voice as representing at least 100 people. Would that mean the estimated 400,000 represents at least 40,000,000? Does that coincide with the % against this war and/or the escalation? Just thinkin’
