Europeans nervous about US travelers database

[photopress:security.jpg,full,pp_image]For the last two or three years, European airlines are forwarding information about air travelers to US authorities. The Americans are getting names, nationalities, even seat preferences of everyone flying into the US. And while European officials say they have no problem sharing the info with US authorities, some members of the EU parliament have become a little concerned with what is happening to that info after the flight is over.
The info is used to give travelers a “terrorist risk score,” and the Europeans want to know if that is fed into the Automated Targeting System (ATS.)
There has been little discussion about the ATS, especially given the fact that many of us are probably in it. My eleven year old daughter, for example, has a score, and the feds plan to keep it on file for the next forty years. It’s not because she is suspected of organizing a terrorist sleeper cell in her fifth grade classroom, but because she has done what millions of Americans do every year–she returned to the United States after traveling abroad.
The AP says that the feds assign the score to every single person entering the US and they intend to keep and monitor that score for four decades. A number of factors are cranked into a computer to determine the number, but they include the seat you chose and what you order for an inflight meal.
You are not allowed to know what your score is nor are you allowed to challenge it. And although you might not be allowed to see the score, lots of other people are:
The government notice says some or all of the ATS data about an individual may be shared with state, local and foreign governments for use in hiring decisions and in granting licenses, security clearances, contracts or other benefits. In some cases, the data may be shared with courts, Congress and even private contractors.
The Automated Targeting System (ATS) has been used in some manner since the late 90s, but was dramatically expanded in 2002. Its existence was not widely known until someone discovered a notice describing the program buried deep within the Federal Register. There were a few news stories about it then (late last year) but the issues seemed to fall off the radar after that.
