Congress should have no higher priority than to put our country back on the right track. We need new direction and leadership. Impeachment would be the first step toward this. If Congress won’t do this then it’s up to “we the people”. Many city councils around the country are raising the issue of impeachment. If more can do the same a national movement could be generated that can’t be ignored by our so-called representatives.

The problem is that the dems are not really of any different stripe: sniveling, groveling, filling their pockets from the public trough.
We the people need to impeach them all, convict them all, then bury the dead in Crawford.
I wouldn’t be against Bush and Cheney being dragged behind a Hummer at high speed through the pot-holed streets of Bagdad….
U.S. citizens must call a national sit-down strike including closed schools, stores, gas stations, factories (including munitions) all transportation systems (air, rail and bus), postal delivery system, farm-to-market produce systems and communications systems. Call the strike the first time for one day. It must be massive. If this does not bring our leaders to their senses, then sit down until Bush/Cheney are impeached and jailed.
If the Congress, Republicans and Democrats, are not willing to move decisively against the Bush/Cheney juggernaut, then the USA is done and dead.

You know my father has been saying for the past few years, this isn’t the Democrat party it used to be, this from a man around during Roosevelt and Truman and Kennedy etc.
I am hearing what you are all saying and the fact is the entire system has been corrupted. Lets go back to the primaries, Nader hooked up with Bev Harris and the black box voting crew to discover that the dem primaries were as rigged as the national election. Kerry is in Bushes pocket, thats his boy, he didn’t win the primaries Dean did. thats why Kerry played dead for the campaign.
The country is bought and paid for by foreign countries, (China owns us two times over) and by corporations, this administration is guilty of so many crimes, but you never hear about it on the news. Have you all noticed that the news is now more like talk shows with the appropriate human interest hosts like Katie Couric, Bush owns all the corporate interests so they can never report on his evil doings or all the sponsorships will be pulled.
All that being said, the whole system from the Whitehouse, Senate, Congress, court systems, the military, the police, you name it they are all on “the payroll” - no one is going to reverse the tide now its far too deep. I have been saying for years nothing short of an all out revolution will save us.
it could be a peaceful resistance like Gandhi did to liberate India from England. complete boycotts right across the boards for like a week and this country would shut down, everyone simply stay at home and not buy anything or go anywhere for a week, no gasoline, no retail, no mass transit, no work, no productivity, etc and then they would have to report on it and have to submit.
But that being said this isn’t the 60’s and everyone is too comfortably numb to care or do anything….

War crimes, lying to us about wiretapping, the non-existent WoMD, all are impeachable offenses, and if we all cry it loud enough, maybe Conyers at least will listen. Nothing can change until there is an interruption of the compulsively destructive path that Bush and Cheney are locked into. Bush has screwed up every business venture he has ever undertaken. His presidency is a continuation of the same pattern on a massive scale. He couldn’t stop himself even if he wanted to. WE must stop him!
I want to scream when lame Democrats reason that we can’t get involved in impeachment because there are too many other important matters to deal with. My belief is that none of those other matters have any foundation if the soul of the government and its leadership continues to be personified by the tragically corrupt figures of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Mr. Zinn is absolutely correct when he insists that we can’t count on a cowering congress to meet its responsibility to extract these cancerous characters and correct their destructive policies. I’m ready to get in the trenches and fight for my country against an enemy that is within. We have a legal means by which we can turn this runaway train around. Let’s use it! Impeachment by the People, NOW!!!

boycott will probably work better than strike, but maybe a one day general strike followed by a week’s boycott would get their attention. but it would not work unless it was massive enough.
mike wallace on the colbert report said let’s institute the vote of no confidence. what i don’t know is how that would differ from impeachment.

If the U.S. federal-type indictments developed in one of the recent books H. Zinn has mentioned actually follow his own fair rhetoric about American history, then I doubt that the U.S. Department of Justice itself could possibly offer all the parties involved in the past, recent and ongoing mass murdering crimes any sort of plea bargain arrangement, including a scapegoat-seeking Congress-for-Impeachment, not to mention the impeached chief executives.
American justice would require the death penalty and anyone with any sense of reality must know that the current president and vice-president are only the most visible parties to America’s felonies. I’m afraid that impeachment by a Congress that has been complicit in America’s crimes since before they were even inserted into formal representation by their class would just be another scapegoating gambit by America’s ruling class.
Although I think Mr. Zinn means well in trying to rouse mass action over a sexy issue and he states many true things about a couple of the current spokespersons for perpetrator America, we are all in for it in the projected “long war” between some other seekers of justice and us, and that justice will come in spades these decades without a more permanent punishment and radical change of the U.S. military-industrial-organized crime empire.
I absolutely agree with Mr. Zinn, et al. If Congress thinks it is hard to stand up to Bush & Cheney now, just imagine if they (Bush/Cheney) are allowed to continue thinking that they are in charge, no matter what laws they have broken and no matter what the rest of us are saying. I was willing to drop the idea of impeachment if they had been chastened by the fall elections, but there is no end to the destruction they can bring about in the remaining days of their administration. They are destroying our country as fast as they can. They almost seem to want to trigger Armageddon in the Middle East.
My favorite quote from the movie “V for Vendetta” (which was panned, perhaps so that fewer people would see it?) is ” People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.”
Maybe they are afraid of us. I have heard that Cheney is a very frightened man, afraid of germs among other things, one reason he has spent so much time in undisclosed locations - the bunker? What if we refused to be frightened and divided. What if a million plus people marched on the Pentagon March 17? Could they downplay that?
What if a general strike was called for and even 50% of those opposed to the war stayed home from work. Could people be convinced to strike? We all have to raise a ruckus somehow, preferably before March 17. That is too long to wait, too many more people, from America and Iraq will die
We have seen this story in science fiction. We must say “No” before the walls go up between the US and Mexico, and between the US and Canada. Walls to keep others out can also serve to keep us in. Can the Joint Chiefs say “Enough of this madness.” At what point do they realize that Dr. Strangelove is running things and call a halt?
It is time for all of us to say, “Enough of this madness.”

Although, I would rather have the system represent us, I don’t think they will. I appreciate this article. My first concern is “HOW DO WE GET THE MEDIA” to cover our activities? Any thoughts on this issue need to be addressed. I know that if we march, we will win. If our marches are not covered and there is no press coverage, What is our strategy and or options?
This is an interesting concept and one that should be explored for effect and the best possible demonstration possible … but only after you have given the Democratic majority of the House it’s chance to consider the alternative of voting for the impeachment the ‘decider.’
I suggest that everyone who is in favor of this action send this article to their legislator and ask them to take action based on the reasons stated.
Even this action might invoke some retaliation from the present administration, which has accepted the claimed exclusive privilege of a president as the sole authority to judge of intent of the Constitution and our statutes.

thats where it has to start. let me say that again has to start. thats the beginning of a peaceful-non cooperative movement. Gandhi did it right. We need non-cooperation. Everyone stay the hell home for a few days, culminated with a march to the whitehouse with 20 million. circulate the news, go to theworldcantwait.com lets organize it and do it. if someone responds to me I’ll give out my email address and we can start to organize. but talk is cheap and blogging is for losers. ACTION is what is needed.
forget about the politics of impeachment. the idea it would hurt the party and seen as vindictive. we are far beyond that. these guys have broken the laws, they are felons and thugs and have been arrogant enough to do it right out in the open.
impeach, and throw the lot of them in jail. bush, cheney, rice, rumsfeld, rove, powell, gonzales, wolfowitz, chulabi, and on and on. they all need to go to jail. our soldiers deserve restitution.
I’m afraid that this proposal amounts to whistling in the dark. Much as one would like to believe that such a grassroots uprising is possible, I see no indication that the people of the country are ready for such action. Sure, they showed discontent in the election, but that was mostly because Bush et al have clearly been botching the war they undertook. Had they succeeded in killing more Iraqis with fewer American losses, it’s not clear that indignation alone would have swung the election. And as it is, the senate is nearly evenly divided.
But most of all, showing anger in the vote makes relatively little demand on a person (other than maybe admitting that they were previously wrong). Whereas an uprising such as Zinn proposes requires widespread determination to make the necessary sacrifices to bring it about. I don’t see that level of discontent in the country. Yes, among a modest number of intellectuals and political activists — the same people who have been shouting ever since the war began — ever since the 2000 election. But not among the people of the country as a whole.
I wish it were otherwise, but wishing and the actions of a handful seem unlikely to arouse a politically naive and lethargic public.
