Senator James “global warming is a hoax” Inhofe on CNN

Jim Inhofe (R-OK) sure lies a lot.Confronted this morning on TV with the reality that in a couple of days 2,500 of the worlds top climate scientist will issue a report describing a near unequivocal link between climate change and human activity, Inhofe just started making stuff up.
First, Inhofe claimed the 2,500 members of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are “politicians, not scientists.” That’s simply not true. Pick up any story on the upcoming IPCC report and you’ll likely find terms like “world’s leading scientists” and “foremost experts on climate change.” (Details on exactly how the reports are created here.)
When asked what he thought about the increasing number of evangelicals who are telling their followers they have a spiritual obligation to pay attention to global warming, Inhofe scoffed and claimed there was “only one” who “is trying to break into the National Association of Evangelicals” because he’s on the payroll of environmental groups. The guy Inhofe is referring doesn’t need to do any “breaking in”—he’s the VP for Governmental Affairs for the Association. And he’s far from the “only one.” Dozens and dozens of influential evangelicals and Christian organizations from mega church Pastor Rick Warren (”The Purpose Driven Life”) to the Salvation Army have said they should have been paying more attention to global warming.
The best part of the whole interview was when Inhofe described “scientists” who signed the notorious Oregon Petition, among them Art Robinson. First, a few words about the Oregon Petition: Some of the signatores include B.J. Hunnicut, Perry Mason and Spice Girl Geraldine Halliwell (listed as “Dr. Halliwell.”) And the petition project itself was mocked up to look like it came from the National Academy of Sciences and a paper was attached that was an imitation of something that would appear in the Academy’s journal. It was all so outrageous the Academy issued a statement saying “the petition project was a deliberate attempt to mislead scientists and to rally them in an attempt to undermine support for the Kyoto Protocol.”
Robinson, the scientist Inhofe cites, runs the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM.) The esteemed OISM has a total staff of one (that would be Robinson) and is run from a compound in rural Oregon. (All the juicy details here.)
And this is the man the Republicans chose to chair the committee responsible for global warming issues.

[...] First and foremost there is Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK.) This man has about as much “gravitas” as you would expect from the head of a local NRA chapter, not a United States Senator. Yet the Republicans chose him to chair the Senate Energy and Commerce Committee, where he not only used his power to block anything to do with climate change policy, but also used the position to give us much aid and comfort to the global warming deniers as possible.
