Sam Graham-Felsen: Obama Steps Up on Iraq

[photopress:obama.jpg,full,pp_image]“[N]o amount of American soldiers can solve the political differences at the heart of somebody else’s civil war,” Barack Obama said yesterday.
With his latest announcement on Iraq, Obama can now be considered the major anti-war candidate.
Obama’s move could be devastating to John Edwards. Edwards has enjoyed greater netroots and (arguably) overall grassroots left support than Obama due to his economic populism and call for 40,000 to 50,000 troops to come home. But now Obama has become the first top-tier candidate to set a definite timeline for the withdrawal of the troops. And let’s not forget this not-so-small fact– he’s also the only major candidate who opposed the war from the get-go.

Dennis Kucinich is the major anti-war candidate. He actually voted against the war and has been against it all along. He also has a detailed plan to withdraw the troops on his website kucinich.us. I am baffled that so few “progressives” in the media are supporting him or even mentioning him. The line that he “can’t win” is a total fallacy. He is honest and unafraid of the media, besides being extremely intelligent and right on every issue. He would never be mixed up in these silly gaffes like Biden and Hillary because he just tells it like it is without the spin. If the “liberal” media and internet community would get behind him, he most certainly could win.
Why call for troops out now? What is in a time line: Antiwar march, Jan 27, 2007. Hillary Clinton, Jan 28, 2007: Bush out of Iraq by January, 2009 “the height of irresponsibility” to hand Iraq war to incoming president. Obama message, Jan 31, 2007: proposal for troop reduction by March, 2008. But, wait– Obama’s proposal is essentially, the Iraq Study Group. Not a terribly progressive group. Why does Obama get the kudos, but not Clinton? They both seem to play the same strategy.
Then again, I’m amazed how fast people get worked up. Join the bandwagon or ask the tough questions? If Obama is stepping up, why didn’t he also step up June 22, 2006 and vote YEA on S.Amdt. 4442 to S. 2766 calling for troops out by July 01, 2007? Only 13 Senators voted YEA, and Barack Obama wasn’t in the mix. Feingold was a co-sponsor.
