They just had a huge profit. They can’t claim poverty. Fact is they are paying scientists to dispute the notion of human caused global warming.
It is time to stop interpreting corporations as persons for constitutional purposes. They are NOT entitled to the rights you and i should have. They should be accountable for their activities and for the harm and damage they cause.
As of 1/07,Exxon is still fighting in court to avoid paying the five billion dollar fine the court imposed. They have enough attorneys to appeal the fine until they go bankrupt.
The same day the disaster happened, Exxon’s CEO issued a public statement that the company would, of course, pay the cost of the cleanup. He was immediately fired.
A law protecting stockholders’ investments forbids corporations from any action that would lower the value of stocks. Possessed of great wealth, corporations dominate our government, guiding energy policy, health care, environmental regulations and foreign relations. In order to maintain their profitability, influence over government and markets is essential. . However, what is good for corporations is not always the best thing for people or the planet.
Currently we are engaged in a military action that would never have happened if not for the primacy of the oil industry. Yet there are simple solutions that could eliminate this problem while denying our enemies money our petroleum dependence supplies them.
Consider industrial hemp. Hemp oil is the fuel for which the diesel engine was designed. Hemp oil is non-toxic, while petro-diesel is an established carcinogen. Farmers could grow tractor fuel. But growing hemp is illegal, and would hurt the oil companies.
Hemp grows without Monsanto’s genetic engineering, without Dow’s herbicides and fertilizers. Industrial hemp fibers remaining after the oil is extracted would eliminate logging our national forests for toilet paper, but would hurt lumber and paper industries. Thus Innovation, our single greatest competitive advantage in the world marketplace, must bow to vested interests legally bound to pursue profit at the expense of all other considerations. As long as technologies as old as the buggy-whip dominate our government, Democracy and Common Sense are illegal.

Trust Exxon – the remnants of the Alaska-spill is really insignificant and negligible in the big picture (presumably in the perspective of the solar system and the tens of millions of years oil has existed).
Exxon val’dez such claims regularly. They know best, being in the business.
And this hokum about global warming – nah, not likely: just ask any scientist Exxon pays to say it’s nothing to worry about. It can’t happen here. Trust them. They know what they’re doing. Or else they wouldn’t make so much money.
An annual profit of US $ 40 billion, that’s like real money ( – not counting the cost of the Iraq war, of course, that’s an unfair comparison, because after all the money in Exxon’s profits has to come from SOMEwhere, like the taxpayer’s pockets; that’s only fair). Exxon obviously does things right, and should be admired for it.
Remember: Exxon comes from Esso, which again comes from S.O, as in Standard Oil, the Rockefeller-owned oil-company pressed by anti-trust laws in 1911 to break-up for monopolistic practices. Exxon’s still dominantly owned by the different Rockefeller Trusts. That means these owners are as trustworthy as Rockefellers have always been. They’re even called the Rockefeller Trusts. That proves it.
This is nothing short of demestic terrorism, affecting the jobs of fisherman who rely on healthy fish for people to eat and for them to provide for their family, what would they say if there was oil all over their private beaches they have bought with our driver funded profits? All while gas is still over 2 dollars?!?!? The oil cartel must be held to account and immediately, their activities must be investigated and criminal prosecutions must commence immediately. They must get huge fines that are unappealable with a timeline for full repayment retroactive..If a failure to repay in full occurs prison sentences must be lengthy and a full seizure of their assets should be implemented. A nationalization of all their domestic production must be implemented and all accomplices must be apprehended..Justice must be served in the name of the alaskans..
I wish someone would organize a world-wide boycott of Exxon gas. I haven’t used Exxon (except in one emergency situation) in four or five years. When our administration is corrupt, and the legal system too weak to force Exxon to pay punitive damages, the people have to take matters into their own hands.

All I can say is, I’m not surprised — I still remember when, when I was a little thinking girl, and Santa Barbara happened. Now, I’m old — and it’s going to happen, no matter what. That is, until we STOP using oil. Completely.

On this subject of Exxon Valdez, it’s also great to see continued focus and description of the environmental devastation it continues to impress upon the planet. Anyone who thought it would be a simple, easy task to clean up and that it’s all been taken care of…well, needs to see a shrink! And I’m not even a scientist. It’s common sense. How sad that there are are fools who believe scientists who’ve been paid off to shout untruths!!
Given the proven irresponsibility an unaccountability of the oil industry, it should be nationalized and used for the public good until alternative feusls can be developed. In countries where it has already been nationalized, the money has gone for housing, healthcare and education instead of mega-profits for the few.
