Bangladesh hasn’t always been a hard place to live. Trees grow there if you push a green stick in the ground. Fruit grew wild everywhere. Farmers get 3 or more harvests a year.
Did you every wonder _why_ the population is so dense there? It has been, (relative to other places) for a long time. It’s because Bengal was an _easy_ place to live, before the human population overwhelmed the ecosystem.
Watch for reports of _40 million refugees_ in that area of the world, within a few years.
yes, it is time to start talking again about overpopulation. maybe even start acting. of course not easy with the US administration in charge of the whole world.
This is going to anger a lot of people in our progressive community, but after thinking about this seriously for some time I have to say it.
New Orleans should not be rebuilt, it should be abandoned.
As many of those that worked on the recent IPCC report were careful to point out yesterday, the conclusions and predictions stated there are only the MINIMUM agreed upon by the climate science community. Though not necessarily MORE hurricanes most probably MORE INTENSE hurricanes - even worse than Katrina.
And unlike Bangladesh, which has not had the determined hand of industry to artificially contain their rivers, by funneling Old Man River much of New Orleans is already below sea level.
We might as well take the billions of dollars it would take to rebuild and put it in a big pile, pour gasoline on it (for added irony) and set it on fire, because rebuilding would be just as wasteful.
This isn’t to excuse our criminal government for not helping all those affected by that storm. Spend the money on relocating and helping them start anew away from hurricane alley. I know that if I were from New Orleans and I heard someone say what I’m saying I’d be outraged, but it’s the truth. This truth might be another reason why so many have not yet returned.
Who knows what goes on in the filthy secretive conferences of the Bush administration? Could be that they concluded this a long time ago (and why they are so disinterested in really rebuilding the place,) but they cannot say it because then it would be revealed that they’ve known all along the scope and consequences of climate change.
