It is a bit embarrassing to have to say this, but every one of the author’s observations are right on the money.
This article provokes intense and very pleasurable gloating in me. I remember the very heated debate between the self righteous Americans during the Administration of President Clinton and the people of Singapore, when the Americans took the high moral ground of human rights, and when they protested at the caning of one American Micheal Fay, an American citizen, who misbehaved like a thug, when he went on a rampage and spray painted several cars as an expression of his FREEDOM to do what he likes.
Of all the stupid things to do, President Clinton himself protested to the Prime Minister of Singapore to intervene in the matter. The people of Singapore did not think too well of President Clinton and those who criticized the government of Singapore. There was a very heated tooing and froing of criticism on both sides, and as expected, since the US President himself pleaded leniency for Micheal Fay, the Prime Minister gave face to President Clinton and reduced the caning from 5 to 4 strokes of the “rotten”(cane in Malay).
The issue here is, “did the PM of Singapore differ to the President of the USA by the reduction of one stroke of the rottan ? I will only say think about; there is the Singapore way of looking at this issue and there is the American way of looking at the issue.
The other point that I want to make is the arrogance of the American people who mistakenly hold their attitude that American values is the value of the world and all must differ to theirs (USA’s)
Those were the days when the word of an American President does count and that even the legendary intransigence of the Singapore People and government need to concede, even if it was by a token of a reduction by one stroke of the rottan. Will Singapore of today concede to the USA of President Bush ?
Bravo, Mr. Green. Your list is long but irrefutable. In absence of preventive medical care system the cancer has metastasized. Looking back into history of decease shall we stop at February 1947, when an idea of permanent security state was conceived by now revered President Harry Truman? Or shall we leap back to 1919-1020s, to great Red Scare, Mr. Green? Is it the payback time for an American Exceptionalism, the tune that owners of this country played so shrewdly so long?
Nowadays our pundits attribute to Albert Einstein a maxim that the compound interest is the mightiest power in this Universe. I doubt that Einstein ever used this banking concept, he would use exponent instead. Or could it be Einstein’s subtle irony? For compound interest is the backbone of Capitalism, that mindlessly expands capitalistic space to utmost limits. These limits are at hand now; our planet has had it enough. This is why empire’s crumbling.
When our Fossil Fuel Age will be looked at as tiny geological layer, future paleontologists will wonder what kind of meteorite had hit our planet to cause so massive extinction of species. For attribute our catastrophe to sentinel being will be beyond imagination of future paleontologists.
Having read Jared Diamond’s remarkably well researched and written book, Collapse, about the collapse of I think five civilizations, it is exceedingly difficult for me to imagine this empire continuing much longer. It is also hard for me to imagine “future paleontologists,” when our species appears to be waving its final goodbye.
And even as optimistic as I try to be, it’s harder and harder to imagine why anyone would even want there to be future paleontologists.
But then again, I think, “Damn!”
All it would take is a small twist of consciousness for us to recognize we are one species, and to start being kind to one another. Directing our resources, talents, and extraordinary technologies toward helping all members of our own species, and rehabilitating the planet, we might even have some fun in the process.

Is there something wrong with Belgium?
