The behavior of the U.S. House and Senate is heinous in the extreme re the issue of “non-binding” resolutions and funding the whims of the Administration.

We voted these people into office to bring the U.S. Military out of Iraq now and design and implement, with accountability, the healing of the people of Iraq and their land.

We did not vote them into office to rubber stamp the plans of the Administration and blather for days over whether of not they would issue a statement that has no meaning while our U.S. Military, their families and the people of Iraq and their land continue to suffer and die. I am ashamed.

  2. 22poor February 2nd, 2007 12:59 pm

I remember saying immediately upon hearing the news of the 9/11 attacks, “This will mean war. They (the powers that be) finally got what they wanted; a reason”. I vowed to do whatever I could to fight against war.

However, I find a non-responsive government. I read articles that claim “the people” can bring about peace. But I ask how? The majority of “the people” are struggling to shelter and to feed their families. Many of “the people” have no money and no energy left for civic involvement due to the long, hard hours they must work. I face members of my poor, rural community daily who work hard yet live in appalling conditions with no access to housing and/or medical care. I beg the experts out there to tell us average Janes and Joes, how do we obtain a responsive government? We know our votes are not counted; instead they send our children into war.

There isn’t a hell of a lot that can be done while Bush is president. Bush is going to do what he wants with or without Congress. The only way we are going to find a diplomatic way of getting out of this war is to impeach him.

It is going to be quite a trick to secure our interests in Iraq after this ordeal. The person that takes Bush’s place is going to have to be quite the diplomat.

  4. Flowerchild February 2nd, 2007 1:37 pm

    Me too.

I am beginning to wonder if 95% of those people (those elected) in Washington are pods — you know, like the soul-less entities walking around in “Invasion of the Body-Snatchers” …

  5. MA_Matriarch February 2nd, 2007 1:46 pm

To 22poor, you are so correct. There is no such thing as “for the people, by the people”, the government has full control over us.

There is no doubt in my mind the government is fleecing Americans into poverty. In my mind, people have become nothing more than wage slaves to serve the government.

Protests are not working, I believe it is time to take other peaceful measures, we need to hurt them in their pocketbooks.

Unfortunately people are too frightened to take that kind of control. I think that is what it will come down to.

  6. MA_Matriarch February 2nd, 2007 1:55 pm

    “Taxation without representation” ?

  7. blessthebeasts February 2nd, 2007 5:07 pm

They appropriate taxpayers’ money like it’s Monopoly $$$–a hundred billion here and there–no big deal. Then they refuse to raise the minimum wage a couple of lousy bucks without tax breaks attached. Where is the outrage? Kucinich for president.

  8. ozarkBison February 2nd, 2007 7:26 pm

i’m beginning to think that the Democrats we elected are really Republican ringers. they joined the Democratic party to be elected so we wouldn’t know their true intention. how else to explain this wimp out?!!! as a citizen i am at a loss as to what to do……

  9. richw February 3rd, 2007 12:53 am

All the comments so far are how I see it.
    WE DON’T HAVE A GOVERNMENT.
Even the good guys, all 6 or 7 of them, none of whom are running for president, come up with wimpy, no value ideas on what to do.
Bush and at lease a dozen of his immediate group have wantonly, (in your face) openly, violated our constitution and our form of government.
There need not be bullets to overthrow a government. We have just experienced a very thorough takeover of the US government.

Win or Lose ??????WHAT????We lost the USA, that’s what.

  10. richw February 3rd, 2007 2:15 am

How many times does Bush have to tell these idiots, “we aren’t leaving Iraq while I’m President”, “Stay the Course”.
Everything else he’s said is a lie, this alone is the truth.

When he set up a bunch of lawyers, including that thug in the Att’y Generals office, to defeat our constitution and the Genieva Convention and our congress failed to arrest the whole mess of them I thought the party was close to ending.

It’s illegal as hell to make and execute plans to defeat the United States Government.
Unless I guess, there isn’t any government awake to notice.

  11. jake4ben February 3rd, 2007 7:54 am

the november elections were just a start. it’s going to take a few more cycles to get a semblance of the country “back”. the hard part is staying committed to ousting as many of the democratic and republican “pods” as possible. COMMITTED is the key word. if the like minded do a few things each day to upset the status quo, then we have a chance. Mandela was jailed for 27 years, Molly Ivins fought this crap for 30 years, Amy Goodman has fought this every day for the last 10 years, MFSO’families have seen their children killed for oil contracts, etc.,etc. Suck it up folks. it took the repugnants 25 years of Reagan, Bush, Clinton (yes Clinton), and Bush to overthrow the government, it’s going to take time to relocate it. Protest, write, call, show up,get arrested….don’t quit, that’s what they’re counting on.

  12. voxclamantis February 3rd, 2007 11:13 am

What a disappointment! It is a concoction of linguistic inventions that maintains the appalling status quo of our unfortunate country, and insures the magical power by which a handful of proxies of AEI and Big Petro are able to lead all of us into their private lunacy. The “War in Iraq” is not a war (it is a piratical occupation) and the “War on Terror” is a paranoid fiction to salve the fear Osama bin Laden has successfully placed in our hearts and to ensure wartime powers for the little Nero in the White House. “Support the Troops” is nothing but a brainless inscription on a ring through the nose of our defanged congress, now busy crafting non-binding resolutions with colored paper and scotch tape. The Unitary Executive appears to remain the operative reality, regardless of our piddling elections.

  13. Buckoo February 3rd, 2007 11:15 am

We do have the Preamble to the Constitution which gives the People the right to take actions when our elected officials are found to pose a threat to the security of the American People.

We must remember that the current person in the office of President of the United States has not yet proven his integrity after six years. The force that placed this man in power is encamped around him.

  14. 22poor February 3rd, 2007 11:20 am

To jake4ben: You are so right. I guess I’m looking for how the poor & rural Americans can have a voice. Most of us do not have the resources to travel to protests, nor can we risk arrest as our children do not have enough to eat now. The unemployment rate is consistently in the 20s. Miss one day and your job is history. And thanks to Mr. Clinton, there is no safety net for in between jobs. The welfare grant remains at 34% of the poverty level. It’s hard to be patient when you can’t find ways to provide for your family. The time of the child is now! Perhaps I’m naive to think that change may occur before rioting begins.

  15. Vince Lawrence February 3rd, 2007 12:42 pm

Yes jake4ben is correct and it takes a lot of soul searching to get to his conclusion. Over the last six years I’ve had countless nights when my wife and kids were safely asleep that I have cried my eyes out. I’m so angry and so powerless. As a young man I let the Army train me to be a killer, and you never forget that training, and I’ve wondered if that is what it is going to come down to. I’m not a Christian but I know that that way is a dead end – would be an excuse to bring their mercenary army here and finally do away with the thorn in their side, that segment of America that still clings to the idea of democracy.

jake4ben is right. Think very hard about what he is saying. Every time I reach bottom and think that I’m finally going to go over the edge I come back to where he is. Righteous indignation does us no good if it does not accomplish those ends we all desire.

  16. Karol Klein February 3rd, 2007 1:32 pm

Every congressman and every Senator, every politician may deny his or her guilt in this holocaust the Bush administration has malignantly forced upon the world but history and KARMA will fetch them up for their cowardice. The greed of our leaders will bury them beneath shrouds of shame and the blood of the innocent victims will drip, drip into their dreams and the screams of the tortured will ring in their children’s ears and their children’s children’s ears for generations and their names will cursed as the very ones who killed human freedom. There will be no forgiving these weak kneed pretenders. Their only salvation awaits them in hell.

  17. paschn February 3rd, 2007 2:26 pm

    Hi Drones,

Since it must be getting obvious to even you dummies that the recently elected Republicrats own stock in businesses doing “business” in Iraq, why not try this?
Tell YOUR reps to DEMMAND Bush move YOUR battle groups out of the area, Then tell YOUR reps to scrutinize just how much power the nation that murdered YOUR servicemen in ‘67 have over YOUR “leaders”.
Also, try REAL hard to grasp this now,… The same media that allowed Bush to lie you into a war that has killed 655,000 human beings, tells you Israel is our friend, there is NO global warming, also tells you Chavez is a despot, Iraqi generals are working against our beloved freedom fighters and McCain is GOOD.

  18. Rick February 3rd, 2007 4:04 pm

The people sent a clear message in November, ” troops out of Iraq”!

Seems what we have here taxation without representation.

  19. daveburt February 3rd, 2007 4:22 pm

There is a real danger of a wider war in the Middle East. A few months ago some alarmed officers (and I’m sure some enlisted men were alarmed, too) on the additional carrier group that was sent to the shores of Iran called officers here in the US to protest. These officers, including a colonel teaching at a military college in the US, tried to set up an alarm, but it was all but ignored by the mainstream media, and Seymour Hersh was the only one that got through at the time. The officers stateside who disagree with threatening Iran have already been moved out of the way. By now there has been a bit of press about the Iran situation, as Bush has gone ahead and made a statement about it.

Meanwhile Congress passed an Iran resolution authorizing sanctions (in many ways giving the green light for an attack on Iran) that was even voted for by folks like Conyers and Barbara Lee!

What the fuck is going on!

I would advocate for massive non-violent resistance to stop these insane public officials…..

  20. americangenocide February 3rd, 2007 5:01 pm

There is no truth to America’s belief in its non-existent goodness. Each time this brutal nation kills another in the name of some demonic dispensation it follows it’s true history of manifest destiny which allows us, when the uncontrollable impulse overcomes us, to be the mass murderers of another annoying million or two, or even more, like ten to twelve million Native Americans, usually an off white populous like three million Vietnamese, three million Koreans, or 1,500,000 sanctioned Iraqis who have offended our king, whomever that may be.

We are a fierce, barbaric, and avaricious nation. We are a fanatical, somewhat insane nation, who has, like all mad people, found a delusional belief in some imagined history, like a national history of freedom, fairness, justice, peace, and generosity towards all, a history that never happened. Our new continuously revised theology gives us the manifest right to holy crusades based on a selective but fervent belief in a document of infallible truth, the Constitution, an American bible of sorts, whose words, written by our Greek Gods, the Founding Fathers, has somehow become a sacred and perfect religious doctrine that makes us god’s people and now allows us to insist on the world’s heathen to adopt our beliefs as they once were forced to become Christians. They must have our “Democracy” or… or what? Will they go to political hell with an unforgivable sin of “wrong political system” for eternity, a system that of course justifies continuous genocide.

We proclaim “freedom or death” but usually save the death part for others especially with our new habit of burning and boiling civilians with liquid gasoline since Curtis LeMay created Napalm for the unfortunate civilians in 62 Japanese cities, and hundreds of thousands of civilians in Germany and after Truman’s Korea Johnson’s Vietnam and Clinton’s continuation of Iraq Sanctions killing 1,500,000 you really expect the warriors from the Democratic Party to do anything about stopping a war. They are good Americans. Good Americans and good Democrats kill just like good Republicans.

  21. ice_9 February 3rd, 2007 6:31 pm

“I’m beginning to think that the Democrats we elected are really Republican ringers” -ozarkBison

Nope — just the same old, useless cowards they’ve ever been.

  22. Vince Lawrence February 4th, 2007 8:14 am

I think that many who respond here are confusing universal human nature with something uniquely American. We are not unique in our barbarity, cruelty and hubris. Manifest Destiny, slavery, Jim Crow, the School Of the Americas – yes these are all despicable expressions of our particular history and it is true that there was as much desire in our “Founding Fathers” to be the empire that they wished to be free of as there was desire to create a new form of government.

But this isn’t something unique to “Americans” (whoever we are) but to humanity as a whole.

You’ll never hear me saying that this is the greatest country in the world – that’s just so much empty bullshit. Every philosopher and thinker since the early Greeks that considered democracy as a form of government predicted this very devolution that we now have. (I wonder what they would have thought if they had envisioned nuclear weapons?)

When I first started writing letters to my local paper challenging the nonsense printed there every day I wrote much like the angriest and indignent commentors here. But my little brother gently convinced me that this approach is no way to win friends and influence people. He was correct and since then I have learned how to speak the truth without, in the first sentence, turning off those whom the scales have not yet fallen from their eyes.

Has it made a difference? Have I made a difference? Maybe. Possibly. My oldest son came home one day from Community College and told me that one of his professors (a solid socialist) made the class discuss my most recent in his class. My mother told me that all the little old ladies in her Bible Study group read my letters and were glad that someone had the guts to say it right. I got a postcard from an Assemblyman in Vermont urging me to get into politics. An old friend of my wife’s that moved to Arizona told her that she goes to the paper’s website every Sunday just to see if I’ve thrown another lance at Bush. And yes (since I don’t hide behind pseudo e-mail names and I’m in the phone book) several times now I’ve answered the phone and a strange voice has asked “Is this the Vince Lawrence from the paper?” Nervously answering yes, I then had a lengthy discussion with these strangers who poured out THEIR anger and frustration – and support.

Your’re all correct. We are brutal, greedy, materialistic, and hypocritical as a nation and many of our fellow citizens just don’t get it. But we have to keep on trying. We just have to keep on trying more effectively.

I don’t think I have much of a shot at politics. As an agnostic secular humanist with socialist leanings and a long buried conviction for possession I don’t think I could get elected as dog-catcher.

But I’ll do what I can.

i agree with you 99%. our leaders, and our people are now threatening , if not surpassing , the catholic church and the british empire for misery doled out in the name of our “exceptionalism”, “manifest destiny” and the “indespensable nation”.

last week 150,000 showed up to protest the war in DC, 2 million screamed bloody murder when the FCC tried to do away with net neutrality, DemocracyNow has gone from 200 stations to 500 stations in the past 3 years, MoveOn delivered 6-700,000 petitions directly to congress last week against the escalation, and Maxine Waters held a hearing in the Capitol to end the Iraq War. Put the # 202 224 3121 in your phone, it’s the capitol switchboard, and easy to get through. call your and any other senator/congressperson 2,3,4, times a day while you’re in traffic, at lunch, on break. Raise hell with them. Write/call every NPR station in your area to get DemocracyNow on the air.
That’s a start. If we ALL did that 4-5 days a week, these jackasses would begin to get the message.
Like Bill Moyers and Molly have said…..it really is up to us.

“We are brutal, greedy, materialistic, and hypocritical as a nation and many of our fellow citizens just don’t get it. But we have to keep on trying.” -Vince Lawrence
Vince is right- we must keep on trying to change things for the better because, in light of the IPPC Climate Assessment, failure is no longer an option.
But the Climate Assessment is only the tip of the environmental iceberg the base of which is composed of unsustainable consumption. Dry statistical insight proliferates around the web- sometimes visualizations are far more compelling. Check out Chris Jordan, the section titled Running the Numbers for another way of looking at things.
