I knew there must be some disgustingly imperialistic motive behind US actions as soon as I heard on CNN that “al Quaeda” was in Somalia. This is the line the Ethiopians fed the US, who I think initially didn’t show an interest. Just yell “terrorist” and here comes the US, especially when there is oil close by. I smell a Cheney.
This is just part of Cheney/Bush’s war on the entire area. If they do not do our bidding, we will bomb them. Iraq, Somalia. Iran (you’re next), Syria. WE are already in Afghanistan for the oil pipeline with an Oil company exec in charge. We the people, must get more active. I have begun calling my Senators and representative almost every day to request they get us out of the Middle East and pay attention to Dennis Kucinich’s plan. Whenever I go into town, I drop by my Representative’s office and leave a message in person. If we all do that, maybe we can have some influence.
We are not as a nation interested in our effect in Somalia, attack or not. It is too detailed to warrant the attention of the masses. you need to boil it down to how it affects the Iraq war, which we oppose. neocons want to win, and we, the people, don’t understand. I’m sorry to lay it out this way.
This is the first I’ve heard of it. The sorrow expands. People do care when they know what is going on. I was at the Peace March on 27th. It seems apparent that the US warlords will do as they wish, with the Democrats blowing smoke and running interference, i.e., mock opposition. Until the media speaks truth (not likely), the criminals are tried and convicted (they’re firing Attorney Generals now), and real people are elected to represent us (yeah right) nothing will change. Our only hope is to withhold the cash, stop paying taxes, and form a general strike.
Somalia also has oil (unlike say, Darfur). Uncle Bush is right, the Dems are a mock opposition. It’s up to us to remove these criminals from power and it is we who will face the consquences if we do not.
Apparently local warlords in Somalia are making a fortune by claiming their enemies are terrorists and collecting bounties from gullible U.S. officials. Of course, those getting bombed usually turn out to be innocent farmers or small-time local crooks rather than the evil “Islamofacists” the U.S. cowboys are gunning for.
This is the same pattern that emerged in Afghanistan, and U.S. officials still haven’t learned the lesson. The overall incompetence and arrogance of the Bush administration are just staggering. Our country has become the most dangerous and facist regime on the planet, killing civilians on a whim or a rumor. It’s sad and infuriating to watch.
Thanks for bringing this up. The tunnel vision of the peace movement is appalling. While its important to be focused on ending the occupation of Iraq, we clearly need a broader vision in which we could readily discuss military interventions than this one. Why don’t we start a debate about why the US has troops all over the world,and whether this actually enhances the security of Americans.
Unfortunately this “next generation of wars” looks all too familiar. Small wonder American curricula in most high schools, and universities as well, avoid serious examination of American foreign policy. The names change but the dynamics remain the same. Ms. Flanders put her finger on every key element in this endlessly replicating scenario. Poor, weak country, run by gangsters who will do our bidding for guns and money, great unexploited wealth or geographical importance to U.S.. A war- profiteer’s wet dream…and only the latest in a seemingly endless cavalcade. I would love to know who the principal purveyors of weapons in this conflict are. I’ll bet there are some familiar sounding names. People who have, no doubt,lunched with Douglas Feith and Richard Perle.
