   Question? if most of the earth does burn the smoke from the burn would go into the atmosphere for long periods thus most likely creating an Ice Age.
   So Earth would then be all but lifeless forever.

   It is clear we have a very short time to act.

   Those of us who have resources (food, homes, income, time to think and write) must go all out, must spend every creative moment educating, rallying, and inspiring the unmoved masses around us to also act.

   True the imbalances we’ve already set in motion will surely manifest inevitable effects — but it seems we have a window of opportunity to make a crucial difference now.

   Let’s not just look out the window and notice, and protest, and comment, and complain! Let’s generate a vision of a nobler humanity, opening a lighted doorway through which many will want to walk.

   People are so mired in the muck of consumer materiality. It will take a strong hand of help reaching into the swamp to pull us out. We can together become that helping hand, which pulls from the swamp, which opens the door.

   We can do it if we conquer the cynicism, self-absorption, and inertia that has made us watchers but not effective communicators.

   We are ready. We are able. Do we have enough love and will to regenerate the earth?

   GLOBAL WARMING REMISS
   It is remarkable that it took the Al Gore’s documentary “Inconvenient Truth”, and now the polar bear demise, to alert many to the impending dangers from global warming–which has been obvious to anyone who had made even minor efforts to be informed. The evidence linking carbon pollution to warming is as close to certain as science can be. Its causes, consequences, and mitigation requirements have been documented by the scientific community, many dedicated environmental organizations including The Union of Concerned Scientists, and chronicled in the press for years.

   The dangerous manipulation of essential scientific data used by this administration to conceal and derail corrective measures for this threat and other vital environmental reforms has also been apparent. Contrary to their assertions, measures to reduce greenhouse gases could only improve our economy by lessening our trade deficits, and improving our security by reducing our dependance on foreign oil. We could also regain some of our lost world respect that has resulted from our opposition Kyoto while arrogantly contributing disproportionally to carbon pollution. With our involvement, China & India could then be compelled to join the rest of the developed world.

   Often overlooked is the fact that the same measures needed to mitigate global warming would be necessary even if it were not an issue. Conservation, alternative energy development, anti- pollution refinements, etc are essential for other vital environmental reforms such as air and water quality, reductions in toxic waste generation, land preservation, etc.

   The environmental and social damage from our indifference to (and even denial of) carbon pollution and its effects can only worsen if we allow these destructive policies of this reckless and unlearned president and his financial supporters to continue.

   Here’s what I’ve done to date:

   1. When my job moved out of downtown and I was no longer accessible with public trans. So, with regret, I moved closer to work in the burbs. The house had to meet the following criteria: were:

   1. Within 5 mi of work and commutable with a 35 mph 25 mi range electric motor scooter I bought for the purpose.

   2. Located a short walk from basic shopping and at least one a frequent-service bus route.

   3. No more more than 1400 sq ft, preferably NO central AC – it’s not needed in western Pennsylvania, period.

   The real estate agent thought I was a nut.

   Other things:

   4. Kept old cars running if they are reasonably fuel efficient – We have an 88 Nova/Corolla and 93 4 cyl Toyota pickup – I modified the engine on the pickup to enhance fuel mileage 20% improvement in many conditions. New cars, even if fuel economical, use the carbon equivalent of 2 years heavy driving in their manufacture – so don’t replace a reasonably economical older car just to get a few more mpg. Reduce your driving instead.

   5. As mentioned earlier, bought two battery-electric, street-legal electric motor scooters. At least 9 months out of the year, these take the place of driving for 90% of local trips.

   6. Bought wind-energy offsets from Community Energy – a wind energy developer matching total household electric consumption.

   7. Thermostat at 58F night/62F day in winter. wear sweaters or fleece shirts – like Carter preached back in the day. Use Flannel sheets on the bed.

   8. Settled for a house with central AC – but generally don’t use it except for a handful of the hottest days. Will use only a small window unit sparingly in the bedroom next summer. Somehow, our parents and grandparents did just fine before the invention of AC – so can we.

   Any one else for energy saving ideas?

   Good Lord! How can this author and all of you be SO SURE that warming is happening and that it is man’s fault?

   Read this quote in the first part of the article…

   “…..not seen for nearly 100 million years”

   Exactly what human activity caused the earth to warm then? If its happened before (many times) what caused it and why is that not possibly the cause now?

   Please answer that question. I’m not for melting to death, but if we’re not even sure we’re the cause what is the point? I submit that if all the nations of the earth got together and made it an overriding goal to raise the planets temperature it couldn’t be done.
