Lt. Watada is a hero. He is something rare in America today. Someone who stands on his principles and follows what is right and what is wrong. Today among all of our elected politicians, there isn’t a statesman standing up and saying that Lt. Watada is right in refusing to obey an unlawful order. If we had more officers like him we would be a much more powerful country than we are now.
Hoa Binh,
In a country more than excessively addicted to war, it’s good to see folks supporting a person who has real courage: the courage to JUST SAY NO.
During Vietnam we had Howard Levy. Today we have Lt. Watada. Both had courage.
I think that one of the best ways to expend our energy in the opposition to the war would be to give our all to the war resisters, those who have gone a.w.o.l., others seeking asylum in Canada, or trying to obtain conscious objector status. And support those who have been there and back again by hearing their stories– at the very least.
Lt. Watada is waging peace.
Has anyone in the House or Senate, any Democrats, weighed in, or made any (for the public record) comments/opinions about this case?
I was at Ft Lewis yesterday in support of this courageous man as were well over a thousand others. The energy there was incredible. We know a true hero in Lt Watada. We must show others that we will be there in support as another resister, Darrell Anderson, reminded us on Sunday as we were preparing for various actions in support of Lt Watada on Monday. If we in the US stand up to the warmongers and show that we will support war resisters, perhaps the soldiers will stop following illegal orders in this illegal war and the Bush administration will have to bring them home. After all you can’t fight a war without willing soldiers.
The willing soldiers come from people who don’t see options. Ehren Watada must receive our support as he leads in this homefront war.
The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, “You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I’m just not close enough to get the job done.”
George Carlin
I want to second Flowerchild’s very important question:
“Has anyone in the House or Senate, any Democrats, weighed in, or made any (for the public record) comments/opinions about this case?”
Lt. Watada is not a hero just because he speaks out and if he really stood on his principles he would have served all of his time in the military with honor…and the US is not a war loving country…we are a peace loving country that sometimes has to use military power to clean up evil around the world.
We all have a choice to join or not to join…Ehren Watada joined after the start of operation Iraqi Freedom “out of a desire to protect our country after 911″. He could have joined the peace corps or amnesty international but decided to join the US Military instead. He was commissioned on 11/20/03 to begin his 8 years of Military service. He can’t have it both ways…The Military does not look kindly upon those that refuse to fulfill the obligations they signed up for. And if he had such a desire to protect our country he should have been the first in line to serve in Iraq, or anywhere else, because that was a way to really make a difference. I don’t know his heart and the reasons he joined but I find it very dispicable that he refuses to serve when called upon. He volunteered knowing that he would have to fight at some point. All of us who volunteer and serve know this and train for it despite who is the Commander in Chief at the time. I served under George Bush and William Clinton. But let me also tell you…I’ve never served with anyone that loved war or wanted to go to battle. No one does! but when the call comes we pick up our gear and march on. The true heroes are the ones on the front lines not some scared man who doesn’t want to fulfill his obligation to serve in the US Military.
We should all unite for Peace and stop the terrorists who bomb innocent women and children while at school or in mosques or synagogues or churches…they are the true criminals not the US Military.
