   When the Chicago Tribune started running his columns, it didn’t take long to figure out he was one of the mindless sensationalists. I quit reading him and the Trib.

   I agree. He is listed in the Arizona Republic as someone who is “quotable.” I wrote them and asked why this arrogant bufoon would be considered quotable. So far, no reply.

   Another example of a consistently wrong conservative pundit who somehow occupies an elevated status is William Kristol. Beneath the veneer of erudition, Kristol is little more than a partisan crackpot. He could hardly have been farther off the mark on Iraq if he had actually tried, yet he is now a regular contributor to “Time” magazine. Do the editors at “Time” believe that getting things right is a less important than representing a particular point of view? Apparently so, as long as that point of view serves Time Warner’s own agenda.

   I thought this piece silly. Jeff Cohen has better things to do with his time — unless he’s sinking to the ranks of the cranks like Goldberg. The more people read and comment on these pests, the longer they last…..

   I live in Los Angeles and am constantly getting approached by the LA Times to subscribe. Why would I when the public service mission of the newspaper is so ignored by the hiring of people like Mr. Goldberg while they fire Robert Scheer and needed staff? I hope the new owners have a clue. But then again, when profit is THE bottom line what do you expect! So much for public service.

   Gravity, I disagree with your assessment of this piece as silly. The point of the article is not merely that Jonah Goldberg is a “pest,” but that the corporate media still regard him as a respectable commentator and a spokesperson for a certain political point of view. Perhaps you may see this as old news, but then what isn’t?

   As someone who worked in the media for 15 years, I believe commentators should be held accountable and take responsibility for their opinions. If you put yourself on the line boldly, be honest about your mistakes. It builds credibility. Jeff Cohen is right to hold Mr. Goldberg accountable. The media, however, know the public has an attention span of a gnat’s life, so they never hold commentators (or even weather forecasters) accountable. Many conservatives spout off about the principle of taking personal responsibility. So take responsibility for your loose lips, Mr. Goldberg, and pay up. I think public citizens should contact (write, call) the Tribune until the gambling debt is paid.
