The experimental “Free Trade Agreements” have failed, not just the majority of citizens in the United States, but the sucker countries that signed-on to these agreements while the economic and political leverage inherent in these agreements is going to the super wealthy.
If recent history repeats itself, be prepared for the Republicans in Congress to vote on a binding Free Trade Agreement and the Democrats to vote on a non-binding Free Trade Agreement.
Either way, we’re screwed again.

Fast-forward beyond the analysis if you are able and write your representatives, super markets, and big box stores; bring it up in the places you frequent, talk to those in your sphere of influence, write a comment and post it on a bulletin board in coffee houses, and campus, leave a note in a market basket; give alternative solutions, along with the bad news.
It is possible for korean farmers to adapt to these changes and so limit the damage this FTA will cause in rural areas.
Please don’t misunderstand me. I am wholly opposed to the FTA. I am writing an MA thesis on a strategy that Korean farmers could use to level what is a very unfair playing field.
Many people see the virtual extinction of Korean farmers as being ‘no brainer’ if the FTA is passed (very much against the will of the people). However this is far from the case.
The economic limitations of conventional farming techniques are not well known. Most people assume that large agri-business farms are the pinnacle of efficiency. It is decidedly not so.
Agri-business farms fail to meet that standard on a number of grounds all of which can be exploited by the small farmer.
Numerous studies have shown that small farms are more efficient than large farms in their use of resources.
Most arguments for the pre-eminence of large farms is based on the term ‘yield’, which refers to the total quantity of one crop in a monoculture. However small farms tend to be polycultures producing a number of agricultural ‘yields’, which could more precisely be termed output when aggregated together.
Another fact that seems to be frequently misplaced in these debates is that one consequence of the green revolution was a shift in efficiency from $1 in to $4 out in 1900 to 2:5 today.
The key as small farmers in developing countries have discovered is a combination of organic and waste management, which together equal resource input efficiency.
When your inputs are produced within by the processes taking place on the farm then your input costs are enormously reduced. When organic polyculture farm techniques eliminate the need for pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and chemical fertiliser costs are reduced substantially.
When the ‘100% organic’ label on the side of a bag of rice means your farm is competing on quality but without the organic premium then you can keep markets even in the face of cheaper competition.
If instead of getting one crop a season from the field you can get two, three, four crops from the same field then you will find you can afford to make a loss on one crop providing the others make up for it.
In this way ZERI (Zero Emissions Research Initiatives) projects in the developing world have shown that small farms can become locally competitive, even in the face of dumping.
At least a part of the answer to this problems for Korean farmers is to beat the Agro-Combines by outperforming them in their home markets. It might not save everyone but it would be a start.

In most of North America and Europe the way we farm is incredibly inefficient. In countries where farmers have to lift themselves up by their bootstraps they are doing so, mostly by letting nature do most of the work, instead of fighting a war against it. Wars are costly, whomever or whatever you are fighting.
The trick is to get smarter. Like rock, scissors, paper - smart will trump sleaze every time. Values do make a difference. People will buy from ethical sources when given the choice.
