Wolf’s situation brings up interesting questions about exactly what a journalist or journalism is. I publish a newspaper and I sometimes write stories for it, but I’m not a reporter. Am I then not a journalist? Does publishing make me a journalist? What about publishing on line? Does that count, or must one publish in hardcopy?
I also have a blog. When I’m blogging, am I acting in a non-journalist capacity? I do research for my entries, and link to my references. I also express my opinions. Does this mean that it isn’t journalism? Must journalism be opinion-free?
It seems to me that Mr. Wolf can make a pretty strong case that he is indeed a journalist, although an informal one and a freelancer. What about the phenomenon of “citizen journalism”? Must journalists be employed by media corporations to be considered legitimate? Must journalists have degrees in journalism?
The role of the Internet in enabling Jo Blow to participate as a journalist in all kinds of marvelous ways, by oneself or in collaborative efforts such as WikiNews, is opening the profession back up to a broader definition. To claim, as do the prosecutors in this case, that Wolf “imagines” himself to be a journalist is a derogatory and elitist stance that fails to take into account journalism’s history and its current explosion across the world. During the French Revolution, every block had its newspaper and newspaper publisher/printer/reporter/propagandist. Nowadays, anybody with an internet connection can be a true journalist. Not everybody can get a paycheck doing it, or hang out a sheepskin, but that doesn’t mean they can’t serve the public as a journalist.
Journalists at their best adhere to codes of ethics calling for accuracy, fairness, discretion, and informativeness. It seems to me on the face of it that Wolf has fulfilled more than the minimum on this.
How long has it been since journalism was “opinion free”? Ethics, accuracy, fairness, discretion? News flash: Bush nominates his mother for Attorney General.
How long is the passive majority of Americans going to let this nonsense go on? This is one in a long stream of rights abuses perpetrated on Americans by the very institutions that are in place to protect them. The only reason the footage is wanted by the system is so that it can identify more demonstrators so they can incarcerate them also. What better way to intimidate protesters than jailing their compatriots. Big business has a long arm that fills many pockets of our politicians. These are the tactics of tyrants and bullies. I can no longer hold my head high when I say I am an American.
Hmmmm, to help make his case, has Wolf filed a US Tax Form stating his profession as a journalist? If so, it seems to me that if the Feds accepted the tax form that Wolf has already been recognized as a journalist.
Even if my idea is off base, I agree that an independent has the same rights as the mega-corps… even though there is little to show from them. I’m under the impression that Fox News gets their takes directly from the White House and most of the others are in lock step with what ever Bush wants us to know-or-not know. For instance, asking questions or trying to represent a fair public over view, questioning intelligence, (oh, I do go on…sorry) but you get the idea.
Wolf needs all the support he can get right along with the rest of us.
Does anyone know the exact time of death for America? I seem to have missed her obituary and since no autopsy was done, I would like to know where the Memorial is and pay my respects!
