These bandaids can buy us time if and when we get around to addressing global population growth and extreme wealth/power concentration. Global Online Democracy (G.O.D.), direct and decentralized, could be the fastest non-violent way to fix things.
Bandaids is exactly right. One method for achieving US energy independence would be to convert our transportation energy needs from on board the vehicle to provided by the highway. With present technology we have the knowledge and resources to begin the biggest public works project since our interstate highway system was completed.
Do you remember that slot car set you or your friend had growing up? Apply that technology to our interstate and state highways. All hybrid vehicles would be able to get to one of these roads and press a button. Clunk! The bus bars contact the rails in the highway and take power from the road. You just have to have enough to get to and from these roadways. Not only would your car’s motive power now come from the roadway, but we could install large central power stations with a single point source of pollution that could be scrubbed to the maximum extent of our current technological capability. Jobs, jobs, and more jobs. And not just the kind where people of the non-value-added (financial types) variety get to skim wealth from the system. Real jobs converting resources & installing sub-systems and components that create value.
The system would use fuels local to the area, for example we would have large solar power stations in the southwest. Coal? Who cares that it is dirty if we are sequestering the byproducts of combustion? Same for nuclear.
US vehicles cruising flat open highways today on average possess enormous reserve power and may benefit from 80 year old hybrid diesel-electric technology, same as stop/start freight.
The freighters don’t burn as much fuel on flat cruise as they do on steep inclines but significant waste still accumulates from two sources: excess loss of combustion heat and excess internal friction, and from a third source in a direct drive internal combustion engine: operation off the peak efficiency rpm.
Electric drive, powered by diesel, or possibly gas turbine, allows a smaller engine running always at its peak efficiency rpm. Smaller means less combustion heat loss and less friction loss.
Battery reserve can benefit cruising freighters but not as much as passenger vehicles due to the mass of batteries needed but down grades allow battery recharge, so cruising freight probably benefits from batteries the same as stop/start freight, over time.
Freight transport is an almost pure engineering problem and politics should be excluded. After all, politics created the climate crisis by suppressing efficiencies and conservation these past few decades. The question of total capacity, like every question of resource allocation, should be left to the people, not to the capitalists.
This is an invigorating development, considering the number of trucks on U.S. roads. I just hope that Congress sees fit to pass an Alternative Energy Innovation Act that MANDATES all such new technologies be made in the United States. This is our last best hope of restoring American manufacturing jobs.
The previous posters, ezflyer, don and rtdrury could not be more wrong about the potential Plug-in hybrid technology offers. Of all the technology developed over the last 50 years, the Plug-in Hybrid is among the most promising.
Whosoever owns a plug-in hybrid gains a back-up power source invaluable in an emergency, that offers an education in household electricity consumption and conservation promoting a dynamic means of establishing decentralized public power and a perfect match for rooftop photovoltaic panel industry.
Ultimately, the plug-in hybrid is the car that need not be driven - which is the real crux of the problem - we drive too much, too far, for too many purposes, at too high cost and detrimental impact. The plug-in hybrid is a car whose economic incentives influence city development whereby more destinations ultimately become accessible without having to drive. Plug-in hybrids support local and immediately accessible economic development and regional mass transit.
Whoever follows this discussion now has an outspoken advocate of plug-in hybrids excoriating those who oppose this low-tech solution. Imagine, a car that need not be driven. It’s floorboard batteries charged off solar and grid power may remain stationary and drive the refrigerator…
This was a pretty lame article… but diesel-electric hybrids are a much more pragmatic direction than nut-case ideas like for example slot-car highways (as someone suggested above.)
The article suggested municipal refuse fleets might be some of the earliest adopters. That part was good… The article hinted that regenerative braking would improve overall efficiency… that part was good too.
One of the most glaring problems with the article was the ridiculous suggestion that Peterbilt or Oshkosh are leaders in this field! The real leaders are European: Volvo (which builds trucks and engines branded “Volvo” and “Mack” HERE IN THE U.S. for the US market) and Mercedes (which builds heavy trucks branded “Freightliner” and “Sterling” HERE IN THE U.S. for the US market and offers them with Mercedes built engines branded “Mercedes” and “Detroit Diesel”.)

It’s been over five years since I retired from Volvo Truck HERE IN THE U.S., but one of my last projects was to build and deliver diesel-electric hybrids for testing by the U.S. Department of Defense. Feasibility testing is old news.
“considering the number of trucks on U.S. roads…” IMHO, Adele is on the right track by focusing on the big picture. There are a LOT of trucks on the Nation’s highways.
Funny thing is, they’re already surprisingly efficient and environmental if you actually look into the facts. Consider for a moment that long-haul aerodynamic tractor-trailers routinely get about 9 MPG while loaded to the legal limit of 80,000 pounds gross. (That’s about 50,000 pounds of cargo.) Contrast that against full-size SUV driver’s getting comparable fuel economy commuting to work without cargo or passengers! (SUV’s and pickup trucks are pathetic.)
With the new low-sulpher diesel fuel and with the particulate traps required on all heavy duty trucks since the beginning of this year, truck engines are much more “environmental” now than last year… they’re really not bad.
How can we make the overall fleet even better? Cleaner burning fuel. Better recycling technology and efficiency. Longer service intervals between oil changes. (Heavy trucks get about 25,000 miles between changes now, but with special filters Stevens Transport is running a very large scale demonstration test to prove 200,000 mile oil changes are feasible!) Weight savings (so we can put more cargo on every truck) and aerodynamic improvements. And finally, here’s the really big place so save fuel and reduce pollution: better routing and infrastructure so trucks travel fewer miles to get cargo from point to point. Yes, we do drive too much.
These are pragmatic real-world low-hanging-fruit solutions.
On the side… diesel-electric is a good place to plug away with development.
Slot car highways is an interesting idea that needs to be discussed. Plug-ins were covered very convincingly in “Who Killed the Electric Car”. And diesel-electric is being used in newer yachts and ships, though it had been in use in older subs.
These and other clean technologies are here and now. The problem is the inertia in the system. Until the multinationals can control these markets, they will prevent it.
Why are we thinking about global warming and peak oil as though our infrastructure and economy can continue exactly as it has been, so long as it goes green??? IT CAN’T. Hybrid, electric, hydrogen, slot-cars, you name it, nothing addresses the fact that our whole system of supply lines that are thousands of miles long to carry plastic junk to huge big-box stores is NOT SUSTAINABLE. We need to STOP hauling strawberries and tomatoes from Chile in the off-season, and learn to do without most anything that can’t be grown in our own watersheds, like our great-grandparents did. And the whole Wal-Mart concept of life being one big discount on a million new things that nobody really needs isn’t going to work, not to mention the fact that most of the rest of the world has never lived this way, and we really can’t afford for any of us to. We have strip-mined, overfished and polluted our way to the brink of disaster so that your average American home can have the latest convenience foods all at the touch of a button. Meanwhile most of the rest of the world gets by on a dollar a day. Global warming is going to make thousands of acres of currently arable land unarable. We, our children and grandchildren, are going to have to learn to get by with a lot less, including transportation, and live a more village-based kind of life. Or, the planet can continue working toward human extermination and find species that are more willing to cooperate.
That we can’t sustain on the present path is indisputable, however, that does not mean that we shouldn’t address present problems to the best of our ability.
With regard to my earlier suggestion: electric roadways, (vs. the monikker: slot car highway) naturally, folks, the suggestion was not that we pin your vehicle to a slot in the roadway! It was merely a suggestion that would address global warming and present security (energy) issues with a single solution. If we could construct additional new railways so that no city is more than 50-100 miles from a railroad depot, then we could eliminate the need for long-haul trucks for another energy reducing solution.
Now to address another issue, bragging about how clean diesel trucks are getting misses the point: they do pollute. A lot. At present, there is no cost effective method of scrubbing mobile sources for CO2 emissions, let alone the more immediately toxic NO and NO2 that all combustion engines emit, somewhat proportional to their size, I must add. And how responsible is Volvo actually being when in the 2007 model year they are offering one of the largest engine sizes in a semi tractor at 16 liters! And with respect to increasing their loads, such an idea is worthy of consideration only after performance based safety testing is implemented as a mandatory requirement, but I digress.
The diesel electric hybrid with present technology is a great idea for smaller & mid sized vehicles. (If a gas turbine running a generator is a serious consideration for truck power, then it is really no different than a train.) If every vehicle had an electric motor drive system, regardless of whether a diesel or gasoline engine makes up the balance of the drive train, presents an obvious opportunity to shuck the mobile emissions sources for larger point sources that can be cleaned.
I think through all this hype about green trucks we’re overlooking the fact that transporting freight on highways is economically unsound by any measure when compared to trains.
If we had overall better public trasportation here in America, not only would our eco-footprint be smaller, we’d have no congestion.
If we substitute the bulk of freight distribution to railways while keeping just enough trucks for local traffic, the positive economic and environmental results would also be highly significant.
Our real problem are the greedy corporate folks who lobby exclusively for trucks and highways since there are much profits to reap through inefficiency.
We can produce our own power right now from our homes and plug in our electric vehicles and or sell it to the utilities that can use electric trains, buses, electric roadways. Here is a good site that simplifies solar electrics:

How about lets call them hybrid recycling trucks? Much of what we consider “trash” in the US is actually a potential resource. Making collection of those resources more affordable and environmentally sound is an important part of the system. Designing things properly and most of all educating the public is of course essential also. Once you leave out the wet compostables (aka local soil building resource) our recyclables can suddenly be collected much less frequently and waste. By electric trucks.
Trains, Planes, and Automobiles!
Light rail:
Major cities in NA could benefit from Don the Engineer” idea of electric tracks. A light rail is an effective tool, if you can get to and form a station. I believe the BART in SFO is considered the best example of light rail in the US. PDX has got a pretty nice system feeding into the suburbs. Suburbs are a luxury. Ironically, affluent members of society are moving back into the cities, increasing property prices, thus pushing the poor out into the suburbs where one is typically dependent on vehicles.
OTR, long-haul transportation:
-Idle reduction is a big start.
-On-board PC map routes:
reduce percentage of driver mistakes, collects data for management.
-Increase call for train transportation. Argument against is client or shipper must be near a train station. However, ports do exist and shipping from a seaport via train could feasibly ship to large distribution centers for company x. Then again, company x might just ship right from the seaport to customer, reducing one leg of the journey.
-Hybrid-diesels and such:
Honda will be introducing its diesel hybrid with meeting higher emission standards: high enough to met CA bottom tier rating VW can’t sell its diesels in CA today, but they are racing to compete for the market. CA makes up ~10% of the automobile market, however, if an additional 20% of States adopted CARB standards, think of the overall result.
Then again, if the average consumer drove 10-15% less, and SUV and non-work related trucks were reduced by 10% and replaced by better fuel vehicles, coupled with better diesel OTR emissions, the result would be very reasonable.
