   Interesting article Andrew..always have time to ‘listen’to your thoughts, since the days of your pieces against Major et al.

   Unfortunately you have missed the major point that we need to review ..all of us.

   The system that is slowly killing us, both in the UK and in America is nothing to do with our leaders..either Bush or Blair. Nor will it do anything to help the rest of the world that is in sufferring at “our ” hands, with crippling debt, lands raped by conglomorate corporations whose soul (sic) purpose is to get fat on the backs of the poor, the weak and downtrodden, those who have always been seen as fodder for the percentage of us that can live peacefully in our beds at night, conscience clear or not.
   We will never be independant from America..as it is now not in the interests of these companies, who need the corporate might of a system that can stand up against the cheaper imports of the East.
   What is more likely is the virus that is the Great American Dream will spread south through Mexico and North through Canada ( we can already see this happening).
   I have more fear about Coca Cola and Monsanto than I do from Bush, Blair and their successors

   The article reminds me of a poem I published in the Blue Collar Review las summer:
   Undeclaration

   It was a good idea, once
   inalienable rights and the abolition
   of tyranny but
   we’ve mucked it up, this great
   American Experiment
   our own inbred aristocracy madder
   that noon-baked Englishmen with
   crimes and usurpations running amok,
   torn bodies and new hatreds in every
   casbah tentacles
   in every pocket and a
   knife at every throat
   and we wage slave
   descendants of the free, the free-ers
   sinking in the refuse of yesterday’s bargains
   punch clocked and jackbooting our way
   to the fossil record at the speed of credit
   with no payments ’til 2009 –
   a toxic spoor of ruined
   places, broken lives and gulags.

   We had a bad run but it’s time
   to come clean,
   to admit our failure to
   examine the bloody Manifest
   of our imagined Destiny.

   Time to Repent
   for mass graves and wars of false premise,
   for all those dictators, our murky turkeyslurking
   in every hot satrapy with trained goons keeping
   bloody order and a quota of disappeared.

   Time to admit
   it was a mistake
   made in the bravado of youth and rejoin
   the Commonwealth
   Stop seeing stars and turn in our
   bloody stripes
   be Britons again
   take tea and healthcare, claim
   our place lordless
   in the house of commons where
   Empire is only a memory
   best forgotten.

   This was an interesting article, but I think you missed the point. Regardless of the rights and wrongs of Blair’s position, does Britain really want to cast herself adrift in favor of making friends with the BRICs? Strategically, I think that would be a mistake. In a world where American power is waning, Britain is best part of a bloc. Either closer to the U.S., which if her power is waning may be more ready to listen, or closer to the EU. Stepping out on her own is probably not the wisest thing to do.
