I wonder if Bill would consider running for president. Who else has the moral stature, political experience, and intellectual brilliance? I guess he’s TOO good, that’s the problem. Anyway, “You go, guy!”.
I confess to being “blown away” everytime I read a Moyers’ piece. Such a mind, such an incredible grasp of the issues that matter to our being human!! No wonder Molly Ivins (I was going to add “God rest her soul” but more fitting would be something like “God, don’t let her soul rest until it abides in us”) urged us to draft Moyers to run for president.
Bill Moyers speaks of “dignifying”. I feel strongly that attention to distinction between dignity and pride would go a long way to uncramp many minds and hearts. Dignity is inclusive. Pride - whether of self or one’s ‘own’is exclusive and possessive. We are constantly caught by the threads of the accumulation system as we attempt to free ourselves. Dignify!!
Bill Moyers is great. But we can’t wait for somebody like him to come on a white horse and save us. We need to act now. MoveOn and the Dean campaign showed us what grassroots action can do. Let’s go to the grassroots by joining the grassroots party, the Greens. We cannot continue to waste our time with the other corporate party, the Democrats.
It’s so sad that after thousands of years that humanity still finds itself in basically the same position that Socrates found himself: Condemned for telling the truth.
I suspect that if one delved deeply into the issue that one would find that many people do not consider the world that we’ve created worth keeping. We’ve got millions of Left Behinders who want to ascend to Heaven in a holocaust. 81% of college students just want to make a lot of money. Cynicism everywhere. I fear for the future….
I believe it was Ralph Nader some weeks ago who wrote on Common Dreams that Bill Moyers should be the democratic party nominee for president in 2008.
Bill Moyers is not a politician,he contains to much wisdom and insight to play the game of politics against the people.
He as a real heart,he seeks not fame and fortune but truth and reason.
And to his credit he as spent much of his life, trying to bring some of that truth and reason to the people.
To put it simply,he is just too good a man!
Whenever I read what Bill Moyers has to say I am humbled,inspired and yearn for more. That we see little of this quality of discourse in our political realm is discouraging to say the least. Would Bill lmake a good President? It’s hard to say because he’d be surrounded, say, ensnared, by the single mindedness morphing into simple mindedness common in Washington D. C.
Bill Moyers should be president, period! But, in reference to Woodrow Wilson, I do think that for all his progressive antitrust legislation, tariff revision, and reform in banking and currency matters, it should also be noted that he was a racist who discouraged blacks from even applying for admission at Princeton while he was president. Wilson allowed many of his cabinet officials to establish official segregation in most federal government offices, in some departments for the first time since 1863. When a delegation of blacks protested his discriminatory actions, Wilson told them that “segregation is not a humiliation but a benefit, and ought to be so regarded by you gentlemen.” Woodrow Wilson’s History of the American People explained the Ku Klux Klan of the late 1860s as the natural outgrowth of Reconstruction, a lawless reaction to a lawless period. Wilson noted that the Klan “began to attempt by intimidation what they were not allowed to attempt by the ballot or by any ordered course of public action.” In a quotation from Woodrow Wilson’s History of the American People as reproduced in the film The Birth of a Nation, he says “The white men were roused by a mere instinct of self-preservation…..until at last there had sprung into existence a great Ku Klux Klan, a veritable empire of the South, to protect the Southern Country.” In short, Wilson accepted the Southern version of Reconstruction with Southern whites being victimized.
Just my humble attempt at adding a little balance to Moyer’s discourse.
Bill Moyers uses history and intellect to enlighten and move us. I seek out his articles and email them to every concerned citizen in my address book.
Bill, you hit the nail on the head. The only salvation that shall be brought to the people is the salvation that we bring. The common denominator being “we”.
