   What a lying headline. What the general said was that there was no evidence that the bombs were being made on the direct order of the government leaders. Based on the parsing any military statement receives from the Feather Merchants that is a reasonable statement.

   Not really Walter. I thought the same thing, but the headline is accurate. There is no evidence that the regime is involved.

   Headlines aside, they are very likely involved, and can you blame them? After suffering under the boot of the Shah for two decades, then warring with US-supported Iraq they’d be fools to trust us. Bush and company have been nothing but belligerant toward Iran, its in their best interest to keep us as mired in Iraq as they possibly can.

   It is heartening that General Pace, whom I have felt was rather passive and went along with whatever the President wanted, is willing to make this statement. He hears the rhetoric. That fizzles it for at least a day.

   My take is Pace has been complicit in all the material deceptions from this administration for some time, despite the courage of many of his retired military colleagues to speak out against the whole mess. For private reasons, he’s now made two recent public statements that undercut the adminstration…this one, and his comment in Congress a few days ago that dissent against the war is healthy for our democracy (in Bush World, even such a bland public comment as that is heretical).

   Perhaps he’s developed a personal crisis of conscience, given that Marines are being sent to the slaughter even more brazenly with the obscene and pointless escalation in Baghdad; or if you prefer the cynical explanation (in the current twisted political environment, cynicism is a healthy response to any public comments by these criminals), Pace is moving in on retirement and with the revelations in the Libby trial highlighting the bogus intelligence used by Cheney and his boys to hype the war, and the Pentagon IG report ripping into Douglas “Bad” Feith and his BS war intelligence right under Pace’s nose, Pace sees the proverbial “handwriting on the wall”, and wants to distance himself from Bush/Cheney in order to salvage something of his reputation before he goes down in flames as an ass-wipe for this carnage.

   Personally, I think it’s too little too late, and unless he immolated himself on the steps of the Pentagon, nothing he can say or do is going to wipe away the stain of his pathetic complicity during the past few years, nor that of his predecessor General Lisp. This has tragically been another historic example of our military being used as a blunt instrument of destruction by a corrupt and reactionary administration that’s fast-tracked the already damaged status of the U.S. in the middle east and around the world.

    Stonecutter–you are right on.

    While we can assume that reactionaries will always be around, perhaps not holding the degree of power they have recently, it is the courage, actions, and lack there of on the part of individuals like Pace, Powell, that will determine if fatalistic policies are carried to fruitrition, or revealed for what they are.

    Their behavior (amongst others) is nothing short of extreme cowardice. Eichman would be proud.

    Having said that, responsibility ulitimately rests with all American citizens (with a healthy dose of MSM support) who either complicity or actively supported these policies.

    Talk about painting themselves into a corner. As far as I can see IranAir could be parachuting RPGs in Sadr city without the US being able to do a thing about it.
    Honestly I`d love to see the US get into Iran. Think of the emition reductions once every major US city instantaneously combusts the second oil hits 150$ a barrel. Or, in real terms, when a Quater Pounder costs 9$, anywhere.

    Bush couldn`t have done a better job of setting up the most violent revolution this planet has ever seen. Apart from Soviet Canukistan there isn`t even single friendly nation with enough oil to bail them out of that.

    Then again if they don`t stop Iran from selling Texas Tea in Yuros Franklin`s going to be lining the bird cages of every other National Bank`s governor.

    Jaysus even the guy Kennyboy elected, El Governator, has gone green.

    My brother who teaches university in Norway tells me to check what we read in the states against what Counterpunch, on-line, reports for the same. I’m going to go do that right now.

    I do want to comment that any rationale that includes “…protect our people…” ought to be challenged with pointing out “our people” in Iraq are invaders, soldiers against whom the citizenry must fight. We have gone into their country with high-tech weaponry and intent to conquer. Bush wants a win. Why wouldn’t imported, more sophisticated weaponry show up – increasingly – as this war continues? It only makes sense. The Iraqis must do what it takes to make us go away. They also want to win. It’s the nature of war.
