   I worked with Greenpeace in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and felt good about the work we were doing at that time. After reading this article, my growing dismay with Greenpeace has turned to disgust. It seems to have utterly sold itself out. And I guess the whales too.

   I have followed the Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace since the 70’s, and although GP
   does some good work and brings attenton to important issues with their photo ops, the killig goes on. So while Sea Shepherd is actually protecting the whales, Greenpeace is eating them. Please donate to Sea Shepherd - they went deep into debt to get this last boat that can out-run the whalers. If anyone can explain GP’s reasoning behind this insanity, please explain it to me. Is it
   one of those ‘Destroy the village to save it’ things? I just don’t get it. Yes, they’ve
   sold out. So has Sierra Club, nationally. GRASSROOTS, everybody!

   So, according to Greenpeace attacks on the equipment that kills whales is violent but eating whales is non-violent. Taking pictures of whales being killed is peaceful but to stop that killing, without causing harm to anyone, is violent. A Greenpeace spokesperson has said that killing polar bears is OK. Oh, and a vegan diet is ’silly.’ Greenpeace it appears, have gone mad.
   If half the money that gos to Greenpeace went to Sea Shepherd, there probably would not be any more killing of whales.

   I’ve worked on the whaling issue for two decades, with Greenpeace and other groups. The communication that Greenpeace Japan is doing right now may turn out to be the most effective campaign work to save the whales ever.

   Know how many people in Japan even KNOW that Japan whales? Only 8%. EIGHT PERCENT!

   Part of the reason is that the Japanese government constantly messages that Anti-whaling groups are simply fringe lunatics, and the media in Japan follows suit. Remember those high-profile conflicts we all saw on Television and magazines of boats in front of harpoons last year as Greenpeace spent Christmas and New Years on the water saving whales?

   Not one minute of that high-seas conflict footage made Japanese television.

   The Japanese government will try to tell us that it’s because the Japanese people all support whaling 100%.

   But it turns out that’s bull. While there’s support in Japan for “Traditional” whaling, when people are shown pictures of the huge factory ships in the Southern Ocean with their exploding harpoons, they say that’s NOT traditional whaling: and a very high percentage don’t support it. Tiny boats with hand-held harpoons? That’s the romantic form of whaling that has a cultural resonance, not the Nisshin Maru and her minions.

   So the real key to building public opposition is to get past the government spin and into people’s own living rooms with the images and the facts, but the conflicts to date haven’t done it.

   Greenpeace have put two independent people into an internet TV show modelled on a Japanese hit — Love Wagon — and have them travelling around Japan looking at all sides of the whaling issue. They’re presenting something that the Japanese people can understand and respond to, partially by respecting the arguments of their adversary.

   (The Japanese Ministry of Fisheries, on the other hand, chooses the Soviet-style propoganda approach of painting Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd as utterly evil foreign forces that are working from ulterior motives.)

   Whale Love Wagon is working. It’s getting coverage, it’s creating controversy. And by creating controversy, they’re forcing the question of whether whaling is right to be asked IN JAPAN, where it has not been asked previously.

   This is smart campaigning: Greenpeace is using their head, rather than letting testosterone do all the work. The high seas conflict is gratifying, and necessary to keep international pressure up, but on its own it won’t ultimately save the whales. Twenty years of international pressure on Japan to stop whaling has only so far proven that whaling will only end when Japan itself decides to stop.

   Japan is a democracy, but like any democracy, public opinion needs debate and both sides of the argument to move forward. Unless anti-whaling forces can break past the propoganda walls that the Japanese Fisheries Ministry has constructed, we’ll still be out on the sea in rubber boats two decades from now.

   And if showing a Japanese-speaking Spaniard eating whale meat in a Japanese home is what it takes to get the issue on the radar in Japan, then Greenpeace is doing the right thing.

   Was also uncomfortable with the whale meat eating episode, but pleased that the younger generation don’t want to learn the recipes.
   Strange viewing experience first the whale banquet and then the shrine to the souls of the whales, which breathed genuine respect.

   Believe firmly that only the Japanese people
   can ultimately stop the whalers. Also that the Japanese government, after having spread so much misinformation about cetaceans and spent so much money propping up the industry and buying IWC votes etc etc is going to need
   a “get out clause” to save face if the whalers
   are to be stopped.

   I’m going to wait and see what happens before making any assumptions that Greenpeace has sold out. This may be one of the smartest moves for a long time.
