Why is this an issue? Columnists and journalists were writing about the existence of this offer from Iran months ago. If they knew about it, how come Rice doesn’t?
When all is said and done, the world will be holding a mass trial for the entire Bush Administration, holding them responsible for all the suffering and loss of human life during their reign. Did anyone ever think the U.S. of A. would ever come to this?
Rice is pleading the “I don’t recall ever hearing about this” defense. Apparantly, if you are completely out of the loop on groundbreaking foreign policy events and/or have a very short-term memory problem that poses no problem for continuing to serve at senior government positions. Just like when she said after 9/11 that no one in gov’t ever imagined a plane being hijacked and crashed into a prominent building (notwithstanding the numerous exercises conducted pre-9/11 for just such scenarios). Then you can go before Congress and the American people and mislead with a clear consience.
It is taking all the corruption, lies, murders and other evils in corporate government, whatever can leak out of the their MSM, to begin to convince some poor, middle class and simply rich conservatives that oligarchs don’t have your best interests at heart. Liberals have known this all along, but we had nowhere to turn to but the Big Oil Democrats. Now we can vote for grassroots Greens to fill in between good Democrats. No more straight Dem tickets!
For a Bush insider who has bounced around the upper reaches of the current renegade administration since the beginning, Condi certainly doesn’t seem to know much. Clearly in over her head as Nat’l Security Advisor, she hasn’t shown much more of her purported intelligence and savvy as Sec’y of State. She never heard of al-Qaeda until after 9/11, she ignored the memo “Bin Laden to Attack in US”, and now she never heard of the Iranian overtures to the White House. Like every other member of the Bush administration she is over-rated, self-important, and either out of the loop, stupid, or a liar.
The real tragedy is the Iranian
overture came from a “moderate” president of that important country, open to reforms at home, willing to take on the Ayatollahs, and offering to communicate meaningfully with the US. But “bring ‘em on” cowboy diplomacy is the preferred approach of the idiot son who is our president, so Condi can’t ever remember seeing the Iranian offer.
Would that Coyotita’s predictions of a new Nürnberg for Bush and pals would come to pass, but it won’t happen. These bastards will retire to their oil-profit mansions, watching New Orleans burn from Trent Lott’s rebuilt Gulf Coast hacienda. I doubt we’ll ever see them pay in any way. If all the failings, incompetence, lying, corruption and disdain of the Bush administration weren’t enough for the American voter to send them packing in 2004, there is no hope for our country.
We must actively free ourselves from the disinformation machine. This must be a constant effort on our part, just as DISinformation is their constant effort.
Someone must demand clear answers and hold these people to account. We must learn to parse their public statements carefully.
Note Rice’s words and the words of her spokesman: she never “saw” the document. According to the Reuters article, both used that word.

However: Did she KNOW about the overture? Did she HEAR about it? Did she just refuse to look at it? That, too, I believe. Else, there is more incompetence than even this administration can be believed to display.

Hopewithheart’s comments are very true. Every one of this gang’s carefully (”I don’t do”) nuanced words is calculated to fit into an exact legal description of whatever they say, so it is cannot legally be held a lie. “Mushroom cloud”, “unmanned drones”, “45 minutes to attack US”, “Mohammed Atta-Iraqi meeting in Prague”, “Saddam-9/11 link”, and so many more deceits like them, may have been lies told to America without legally lying. Once the adminstration talking points are made known, the right-wing chirping parrots make sure all Americans hear the lies, while leaving clowns like Condi with some plausible deniability. However, on all these reports/denials one of two things is true: Bush and pals are liars, or they are incredibly incompetent. My take? They’re both.
If they haven’t lied in a legal sense, they have many times over been guilty of, at the very least, making negligent misreprentations and, more probably, false or fraudulent misrepresenttations in order to deceive and mislead the American public. The mainstream media for the most part went along with the deception and still do so. It is very difficult for many to admit that the country is governed by such charlatans
So let’s talk out loud about this prior olive branch. And how about learning about Iran: watch some of their own films; take a pictoral tour, read up, talk to a Persian.
If enough of us talk and tell the truth, maybe the lies will just start to sound so outlandish they’d never be mistaken for truth. While we’re at it, we’ll realize that the house of Saud/Bush/Carlyle in the light of day, are cowardly, audacious, disconnected, duplicit, murdering hypocrites. In dynasty there is “nasty”… and a loss of humanity — often in the guise of incompetance. It’s quite obvious that they just don’t care. They are playing their own game.
This is off topic, but how come the world’s finance ministers could gather for a photo op and seem to have no shame or embarrassment that none among them are female? Such a spectacle, as a photo op, looks absolutely ridiculous! Our paradigms have GOT to change.
I believe we’re talking about the same person who was admonished by a fellow American for shopping for a new shoe wardrobe on the day after Katrina. Wasn’t her boss (aka Commander in chief) giving war speeches on the eve of Katrina after being told a Category 5 hurricane was approaching New Orleans? Should we expect any more from these two world leaders?
Based on the “evidence”, this is another example to add to one of the many characteristics of this corrupt, lying administration… Ignoring communiques from within their own departments and from foreign governments that may prohibit or delay the murderous direction of the neoCon policies in Arab countries. We saw it with 9-11, we saw the deliberate ignorance with internal memos from the State Department, the CIA, NSA, and his own advisors (who are one by one leaving because they-just-won’t-listen to facts and reliable judgement).
The “heat” was enough to change direction towards N.Korea – keep it up, and maybe Bush-the-idiot-monkey will begin to talk to Iran.

can be held accountable to the American people and to the world community is through formal impeachment. It may never be completed, but it must be started in Congress ASAP.
As has often been pointed out, the electorate could claim non-responsibility after 2000, since we gave Gore the popular vote and had no input into the Supreme Court’s disgraceful actions to install Bush in the presidency. However, after 2004, we’ve been on the hook for the systematic destruction of lives, property and U.S. prestige around the world, not to mention the impotence of the Senate and House. It’s on us, the American electorate. Through us, we’ve got to reclaim the dignity and credibility of our government by impeaching these obvious criminals. As with Watergate, it would be a declaration that no one is above the law in our society, and that we demand accountability for this cascade of deception, ideological insanity and human waste and destruction, both in the middle east and among our own troops, dead and maimed.
No impeachment, no accountability, no moral future for this nation. As it is, any rhetoric from anyone in the White House, from Bush on down, and from most so-called “leaders” in Congress, has lost its very meaning, let alone its potential to influence. It all smells like the same putrid, insubstantial spin that has engulfed every definable issue of importance to our people. It’s precisely crafted to evade responsibility, deflect positive action, and perpetuate the “us vs. them” paralysis that has gripped our government and much of our population.
Impeachment will “focus the collective mind” of the American people, just as it did in Watergate, and even during the Clinton travails (his lying was the true offense, not the sex). If ever a president and vice president deserved to be impeached…?
Get behind impeachment…assail your Congressman or woman…this is the only way to recover our national soul.
