>>Why isn’t everyone furious about this war and the one being ginned up as its successor? Why isn’t everyone doing everything in their power to protect and defend our military from George Bush? If not us, then who? This is a humanity issue. And so I echo the refrain, “What the hell are we doing?”
That’s the big question. There are still many millions of Americans who actually support this war. How do these people rationlize what we are doing over there? Are they not aware of death, of unspeakable horrors? They support President Bush’s war effort, yes. Do they also support his cuts to vets benefits?
This past week, the odious Cal Thomas wrote another one of his insipid op-ed columns in which he quotes one letter from one GI who writes what a lofty goal this war is and how important the troops count on our support back home. The message is the same: it’s not that this is a war based on lies and carried by lying leaders who are also incompetent, clueless chicken hawks. Oh no, the real problem is us rotten unpatriotic liberals back home who won’t support the troops. How I loathe those in the right wing media who will keep this crap coming - I guess they’re quite fond of their big paychecks.
War is hell. We should go into war only when absolutely neccessary. End the war today. Further investigate Bush and Cheney and bring up impeachment charges when the neccessary evidence is all there. Give them civil trials and if found guilty, keep them under house arrest at their respective estates for the rest of their lives.
This war is an abomination.
What I’m curious about it how Bush does it. I’d like to ask him and Cheney, How do you guys get up every morning, look in the mirror and say I feel good about myself?
Deep down they must be miserable, and if their not we’re all in a lot more trouble than we think!
Mr. Bush and Dick Cheney are in Peter Pan Land and, unfortunately, were all going for the ride.
Thank you, Barbara, for bringing attention to this eye-opening documentary. I wonder if the people who support this war can watch this and still continue their support.
I’ve emailed the video to my state representatives (from Google video) and urge everybody to do the same.
Forward it to everyone you know. Shout it from the rooftops! Put flyers with the link under all of the “Support Our Troops” magnetic ribbons on “patriotics’” cars.
We need to wake up and see that our tax dollars are responsible for this attrocity. WE are funding this. WE are destroying Iraq’s people, civilization and society, as well as our own.
ALL OF THIS ISSO SAD!!! WE ARE KILLING LOTS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE. OURS AND IRAQS!!! WE INVADED THEIR COUNTRY ON STUPID LIES AND IDIOTIC MANDATES! I THINK MORE THAN ENOUGH PEOPLE HAVE DIED AND SOMEBODY WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS DEBACLE. STOP AND BRING THE TROOPS HOME! NOW!
The military is the only thing that prevents a Bush dictatorship. Bush has destroyed the morale of the Nalt Guard and the Reserves. Now he has to get the rest in line or dead. This behavior is consistent and obvious since his selection by the Supreme Court in 2000. It is clear that the newly elected congress is just as terrified of Bush as the last one was greedy for his gifts.
What really makes me angry is knowing that George W couldn’t even serve in the National Guard without going AWOL and he has the nerve to start wars and send others in–including National Guardsmen? I heard him say that “Money trumps Peace.” I guess that is what all these wars are about.
This war isn’t a mistake by Bush. It’s an intentional act, and a treasonous act at that. This war is DEATH FOR DOLLARS. Someone convince me that the planes brought down the towers. Convince me that NORAD made a mistake that day. Convince me Bush was mislead by the intelligence community. Convince me that despite opposition from all fronts that Bush presses forward because he’s stubborn.
The group I watched “The Ground Truth” with stopped about halfway through. The horrors are simply sickening. We got the message.

It’s time for the military to fullfill it’s obligation to protect and defend the constitution and the country from all threats foreign and domestic. It’s time for it to refuse illegal orders, to stand down and witdraw from Iraq and to arrest the thugs who have purposefully and willfully misled this country to war and undermined the constitution.
I think a few million dollars could end the war.
Here’s how: three or four billboards prominently placed in every major city, with the caption, “Your taxes at work!” and maybe a digital counter such as you can find here:
http://nationalpriorities.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=182
Above the caption would be pictures of the dead, maimed and mutilated people this article discusses, particularly women and children.
Most people seem to have no clue, but I think there’s a good chance this might get their attention.
Here, here! Would that it could be so.
“It’s time for the military to fullfill it’s obligation to protect and defend the constitution and the country from all threats foreign and domestic. It’s time for it to refuse illegal orders, to stand down and witdraw from Iraq and to arrest the thugs who have purposefully and willfully misled this country to war and undermined the constitution.”
( Jaded Prole, Are we gonna be hauled away because we support what they would call a mutiny, that we would call their duty?)
I’m guessing that many people are like me, furious but feeling powerless, because those in power won’t hear, or don’t care. I kinda feel like, “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream”. Much of Congress must feel the same way. Cheney said it doesn’t matter what they (or we) think, the administration is going to escalate and occupy wherever he and Bush/Rove want to send our soldiers, citizens, wanna-be-citizens and the money they have borrowed in our name.
The fact that the Joint Chiefs have openly disagreed with their commander-in-chief gives me some hope. But will they be able to stop the sacrificial slaughter of our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and a whole nation? Wish we could marshall the spiritual energy of our founding mothers and fathers, and all of the brave troublemakers who came before. We will have to be content with the living. Bring your noisy pots and pans to the Viet Nam Memorial on March 17 and march to the Pentagon, and/or send everyone you know. We can say thanks to the Joint Chiefs and encourage them to protect and defend our military, our constitution, our nation, the world, from these greedy megamaniacal madmen.
Pity Bush doesn’t read the newspapers, (or our signs- Reading should be a requirement for anyone seeking to hold the office of President of the United States of America) because we might be able to remind him that he said he would listen to the generals, and that we know that he has not done so, and that the legal deciders, ie the American people, do not concur with much that he has done, and that his legacy is —t, and that his family must be mightily ashamed of what he has done to the world and their name, and that the whole world grieves for the destruction for which he and his company are responsible.
One paradox of the antiwar movement that gets under my skin:
It is against belligerence and denounces the military-industrial-academic complex, but professes deep admiration and loyalty to the members of a professional, all-volunteer armed forces. Everywhere people fall victim of employing subjectivity instead of objectivity.
Part of the irony within the antiwar movement comes in America’s psychological need to personalize the military. The military thus becomes your brother, mother, uncle, and cousin. They are reported to be your friends and family, but rarely members of Congress or their families. Rarely are they depicted as a willing force that carries out the violence and domination of US policy. Very rarely is the system criticized for the WASP patriarchal hierarchy it pushes. Calls for saving the armed forces from Bush are made….
…According to the OP all service members are heroes. Talk about a free ticket to idolization. Regardless of their actions, everybody comes home a hero.(All I have to do is survive 2 years in the armed forces, and I get to be a hero?! Imagine the impact that can have on some young person who wants to be connected to things bigger than herself. He/she looks around at his surroundings and thinks I’ll never be anyone of importance. But, hey! If I join the army, I’ll be a hero! Even people in the lentil eating section will call me a hero. I can be somebody!)
Long after the UN called the actions America carried out against Iraq in 2003 “belligerent”, American’s are still supportive. According to the descriptions for many of the US medals, such as the medal of honor, the silver and bronze star “…is cited for., action against an enemy of the United States while engaged in military operations., …in which the United States is not a belligerent party“ Why are the medals of heroes intended to be awarded when the US is not a belligerent party? The answer seems rudimentary.
Another paradox of the Peace and Anti-War community is that most of them continue to pay their taxes to support the wars, while asking Congress to cut off funds to the Military. How about all of us cutting off the funds at the source? You and me? I owe nearly $5,000 from 2005 and am facing forcible extraction of the money from my assets if I don’t pay voluntarily, including interest and penalties. As another writer above points out, we feel helpless in the face of the insanity of the politicians, but if enough of us stopped paying taxes and let our Congress people know that is what we were doing, it might have an effect. And, why doesn’t anyone propose not paying the military contractors more than they pay the soldiers for their services? Why should they be exempt from the “sacrifice” asked of the regular soldiers? And, yes, Rob, the fact that one wears a uniform does not make them a hero nor exempt from responsibility for their actions, or failure to act when witnessing a war crime? Lt. Watada is taking a stand for Peace and against unlawful orders from the Commander-in-Chicken. We do owe the returning soldiers recognition of their war-related injuries, of all kinds; and, they may have to face legal consequences for violating Geneva Conventions and other laws. It is a very complex set of issues. The first on the table is ending the U.S. involvement and holding the criminals who are prosecuting the war accountable for their crimes.
Peace,
St John
All Too Relevant Quote: How is the World Ruled, & how do wars start?—
Diplomats tell lies to journalists, & then believe what they read.
(Karl Kraus, Austrian Press,1874-1936)
Even with our limited information on this war, it is all to evident that our legislators erred when they granted this unlearned and arrogant administration the authority to embark on and perpetuate this disastrous misadventure.
The weapons inspectors were there and we had contained Saddam. The resulting “civil war” and chaos had been predicted by many informed experts, and should have been obvious–but their advice was ignored. One can only imagine the extent of disaster if Saddam had unleashed some biological, chemical, or primitive nuclear weapons on our troops during the invasion.
After nearly four years, the only rational option left now is for congress to seize the war powers from the president–and then pursue a logical course to conclude this misadventure. This would include not only recognition of the recent advisory commissions recommendations (which the administration ignored) but also curbing profiteering, promoting measures for energy conservation and global warming mitigation to reduce our dependance on their oil–and regain some worldwide trust.
The alternative is to permit continuation of this disastrous quagmire, while risking a war with Iran and destabilization of the entire area– and further damaging our international stature.
