Bottled water? if you would just look at the bottle and say to yourself Why. Imagine all the energy that would be saved and you would have money to buy some other piece of crap.

Bottled water is a racket. In developing countries it is often a bandaid over neglect of governments to build municipal water systems.
Some people have justifiable reasons to mistrust municipal tap water. There are many good charcoal filters on the market that use far less resource than bottled water, and do improve taste and remove organic compounds (and little fluoride, for better or for worse).
Don’t forget the waste involved in shipping the water all over the place. Its idiocy.
Craig, the case debunking the anti-fluoridation efforts goes back nearly 50 years. Even a movie was made about it (remember Dr. Strangelove, and the line about poisoning “our Precious Bodily Fluids”?).
West Virginia banned fluoridation, and today, the number of people outnumber their remaining healthy teeth.
Nevertheless, bottle water is yet another example of conumerism gone mad. It is just the tip of the iceberg.
My mantra is: “If it needs to be advertized, you don’t need it”.
It’s amazing how resistant people are to information. “You can lead a horse to water –”
They’re dumping hazardous industrial waste, very much like they’re putting heavy metals sludge in bags of soil amendments as “compost” –to put in our home gardens.

It was OK, EPA said, because it considered that condition to be only a cosmetic effect, not an adverse health effect. The reason for this EPA position was that it was under political pressure to set its health-based standard for fluoride at 4 mg/liter. At that level, EPA knew that a significant number of children develop moderate to severe dental fluorosis–”
Read on about fluoride (or not) as you wish. I can’t get too worked up about this issue since civilization has so many other train wrecks looming ahead –a short way down the track.
Jared Blumenfeld and Susan Leal are simply stunning. I’m not any expert of Federal water standards but I do know that the idea of Federal standards has no meaning when every Federal office of “oversight” is basically run by the industry of which it serves. There are no more Federal oversight groups only groups departments or whatever you want to call them that work for the industries whch they SERVE. The revolving door became especially obvious to me personally when I lived in the DC area. My ex-wife was working as a legal secretary for one of the oldest and largest lobbying firms on K street. She was assigned to a new attorney in 1993 right after the usual government changeovers that occur when one party takes power from another. This new attorney had been working in EPA and had participated in putting together the “Blue” issue of National Geographic which covered the topic of the world’s water. She would be working for this firm on K street lobbying for none other than Culligan and Alahambra, 2 of the biggest water providers in the nation. This was under a Democratic Administration and Congress.
In 1995 I moved to Atlanta GA after going through a divorce. One of the first things that I saw on the news later in 1996 was a sewage treatment plant that had been contaminated by someone dumping a substance in the plant which effectively killed the bacteria which was responsible for breaking down the feces and such prior to the “clean” water being returned to the Chattahoochee River. In effect the plant had dumped over 800 million gallons of raw sewage into the river for 3 days before anyone came by to inspect the plants operation. The Plant Mgr then came on the news and stated, and I quote “what we really need is some rain”.
The next event which confirmed to me never to trust any governing body with water happened last year in Gwinnett County GA. We received a notice back in December of 2006 regarding an incident which tainted the water that had transpired back in January of 2006!! The notification was very vague but repeatedly stated we were in no physical danger. Good thing we don’t drink our tap water.
The 2 good points in the article in Sunday’s paper were first the amount of crude oil used in the production of the bottles for bottled water. Many people still do not realize plastic is made with crude oil. The fuel used to ship water from Europe, Fiji and other places is also enviromentally caustic. Little was mentioned though of the connections between local, State and Federal politicians, their wallets, and the new Nestle proposed bottling facility neart Mt. Shasta. I’m sure if Blumenfeld and Leal did some real digging and reporting they would find those financial connections and possibly be able to stop Nestle from defiling some of the most pristine lands in the west. I grew up in Santa Cruz and have done much camping, hiking and climbing in the Shasta-Trinity area. As for alternatives to bottled water, trusting any part of any level of government is foolishly stupid at this point in our history. In my house we use filtered tap water for about $0.39 a gallon purchased at our local co-op store in Decatur GA and reuse the same 5 gallon bottles. I also reuse the few bottled water containers for several months, cleaning them out of course with soap and water, before replacing them when they eventually wear out, which they do since the bottles are being made with lesser quality each year.
I wish a similar article would appear on the subject of eating meat. The meat industry does much more harm to the environment than the bottled water industry. Both are bad, but the consequences of eating meat dwarf those of drinking bottled water. That’s the problem with so many environmentalists. They rage about peripheral problems but seldom look at the core. How absurd to complain about the waste generated by the bottled water industry while you much on a burger!
The chloramine and flouride that are added to the subject water supply have been proven to be detrimental to human health and lethal to other species. These additives have significantly increased the demand for bottled water. The two authors and the organizations that pay their salaries are therefore contributing to all the problems that they are blaming on the bottled water industry and customers.
Although piped water systems are an efficient means of distributing water, few systems rely completely on gravity as the authors allege. If pumps, or other energy consuming equipment are not used in the underground piping system, they are used in the high rise buildings that are an integral part of urban landscape.
No matter how many times you say San Francisco drinkinking water is good does not make it so. In my opinion if you leave a glass of it out overnight it will taste like nail polish before morning. Those of us who have an exceptional sense of taste and smell think we can taste what seems to be a nasty chemichal taste in the water fairly often.I am not the only one either. I am lucky enough to have EBmud drinking water now. My tongue (that thing that evolved to ensure our survivalthrough taste) tells me its good. What is that chemichal taste that I think I detect in SF. Is it an “unregulated” chemichal and therefore “not tested for” chemichal. One thing I have learned is to trust my self. I will just say NO to San Franncisco water till it tasts right to me. Growing up in the heart of Africa all I can say is thank god for chlorine and I wish we had flouridation. Everseen someone with no teeth and cholera?.
I belive that we can take it one step further, what are we doing with all the empty water bottels, they are worth 5 cents each in HA CA that is alot of money that could be put to some good use.Ther are sevearl groups of peop;le that could benft from this simply to gathere the empty bottles, and turn them in would generate enoough in cmo to asset many diffrent people and at the same time help the enviroment.
