I like your editorial–easy to see why it has been requested so often. (How important it is for everyone to focus on strengths rather than deficits prescribed by others.) The editorial reminds me of the book I would like to write, which would haave this title: “All the Things I Have Learned from Black People that Have Made me a Stronger, Better Person.” Some of my learnings and benefits have been: how to deal effectively with adversity, how to laugh instead of cryng, how to focus my energies on what matters, how to engage in self-care, how to enjoy life — you get my drift, I’m sure. Maybe I’ll write an editorial for Common Dreams some day on this subject. It’s only fitting that I explain how my (white) life has been enriched by my interactions and relationships with black people. When I became intent on knowing black people, I had no idea what I would learn and how my learning would change me. I am so fortunate.

Though it seemed rhetorical, the answer to the question “what makes you so strong?”, is of course the human spirit itself. Black people have no more or less of it than anyone else.
You “became intent on knowing black people”, CD? And this makes you feel good like you accomplished something special? You obviously don’t know black people at all, or you’d already know they’re people just like anyone else. The myth of seperation is the most insidious form of racism there is.
People are people are people, period. Some are good, some are bad. Some are heroic, some despicable, most are unremarkable. And you cannot in any way determine which from which without knowing them as individuals. Is this really so hard to understand?
I totally agree with part of your statement, Kitty_TC, that “people are people, some good, some bad . . . most unremarkable.” By getting to know black people personally as the individuals they are, I had opportunity to observe and learn some of the skills they HAD to learn in order to survive as slaves in a Jim Crow world and which equip them to deal with institutional racism today, which I have never had to face.
I wish many other white people could have the opportunities I have had to know black people as individuals. Our culture does not promote actual knowing of each other when one party in the relationship is black and one is white.
My life has been profoundly shaped by my continuing lifelong relationships with black people, even those who may indeed be unremarkable.

While it’s good to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of people from different ethnic groups, you shouldn’t put any group on a pedestal either. It’s one problem I have with race relations in this country. People on the Right demonize non-whites yet people on the Left often act as if non-whites can do no wrong.
I’m white and went to a predominantly black but diverse high school. I saw a lot of good and a lot of bad. One thing it taught me was not to put any group over and above any other. Lowlifes, racists, dirtbags, homophobes, misogynists come in all colors, but so do kind, cool, smart, and all around awesome people also.
It just bugs me when people say one group is inherently “strong”. I’ve known weak black people and mentally tough white folk, and vice versa and every which way but loose.
