It should be noted that Israel is never required to recognize Palestine, commit to ending terrorism against it or honor their past agreements. Unfortunately no progress is possible until we have new leadership that is willing to pressure Isreal based on an evenhanded and rational approach.
There is so much more to this than lack of leadership. That suggests a lack of cohesion or of will. The fact is that there is very strong cohesion, order, and will. This cohesive entity has a label: “The Israel Lobby.” This Lobby lives within the United States and is housed within high governmental positions as well as very powerful think-tanks and other organizations.
The Palestinian apartheid situation as well as the Iraq and the pending Iran wars, are ALL due entirely (or mostly) to the Israel Lobby.
I would suggest to anyone who really wants to know who to rail against (but do so with caution), to read the article in the London Review of Books, by the same title - The Israel Lobby (http://www.lrb.co.uk/v28/n06/mear01_.html).
As long as we, the proles, keep talking about “lack of leadership” in a diffuse manner, neocon organizations such as the Israel Lobby will keep grinding away. We need to start peeling back the curtains to see who’s really at the controls if we’re ever to make any headway.
It is an insult to all the parties involved, as well as a waste of taxpayer dollars to send
Condollleeeezzza over there to spew tired platitudes when they have no desire for a fair
deal for the Palestinians. It’s obvious that the plan is to keep putting the screws to them, even though doing so just exacerbates the whole volatile situation in the Middle East. It’s so insane and inhumane.
Only the ignorant truly believe there is ANY effort at peace in Palestine. If you go back to 1947 it was Jews, namely Sharon, Gurion and their ilk, who comitted the first acts of terrorism. They had US aid then when they bombed the British HQ’s in a htoel in Tel Aviv I believe. In any event each time a new hurdle is set before the Palestinian people it is moved again by the Israeli-US “peace” teams. The real reason Arafat backed out of the last so called agreement was that he was expected to give up Jerusalem and get nothing for it. The entire “negotiation” process is merely the stalling tactic used for Israel to continue to grab more and more of Palestine. In order to understand where the people involved are all coming from, you must first realize that Palestine is a land and a place and Israel is an idea and has no basis in reality. Look to the American Indian Reservations if you want to see the model used by Israel today in their seizure of Palestine. The common attitude in Israel is that the only good Palestinian is a dead Palestinian and any one who speaks such as I dare to is simply called an anti Semite. There is no room for discussion or debate and until the US decides to take back itself from Israel there will be no peace in Palestine. In fact today the Jews are beginning to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem and recent reports have shown that Muslims have been locked out of the Al-Aqsa Mosque while this is being done. This, along with the wall, and the continued propagation of more and more settlements in Palestine are not actions of those intent upon peace, except at the death of those in their way.
I have an acquaintance who is a journalist and works for “The Australian Newspaper” in Sydney Australia. she is apparently employed as a sub editor reporting on matters touching and concerning terrorism issues. Recently this person came to Western Australia and casually informed me that she had come across for her sister’s wedding but regretted the timing as it clashed with a free tour for journalists to Israel sponsored by the “Jewish lobby”. Interesting; more interesting is that “The Australian” is a conservative paper owned by…….Murdoch.
We’re not “making fun” of anyone. We’re criticizing the injustice of the Israeli government policies toward the Palestinians. Many Jews, Israeli and American, are also critical.
I can understand Israel’s reluctance to deal with Hamas. After they won the election last year, they immediately called for Israel’s destruction. The Palestinians asked for it.
These zionist neocons are devoid of any capacity for mercy or justice. All they understand is power and greed. For political reasons, they seem to feel obliged to make noises about seeking peace, but it’s only a charade.
It’s awful what happened to the Jews in the Holocaust, but today we need to realize that was then. This is now. The Arab people were not the perpetrators of the Holocaust. The neocons are irresponsible players and need to be curbed.

Based on what “truth” do you make the statement that the Palestinian leadership called for Israel’s destruction? Would that be the same “truth” that said that Arabs wanted to push Israel into the sea? Do you know who called for that? The Israeli propaganda machine called for that in order to drum up support for their colonial hegemony!
Before you go spouting the same tired (and ultimately deadly) rhetoric, check your facts!
Jimmy Carter spent a little time (I’d wager more time than you, Ken) in the Middle East and successfully brokered a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt. He is still intimately involved with that area of the world and he understands the significance of peace and war there. Ken, Jimmy Carter wrote a book recently about the subject. It might do you some good to read it because as I write, American blood is being spilled in no small part because of Israel’s hegemony!
The peace process needs an honest broker..as long as the US and the quartet continue with this charade of trying to broker a peace there is no hope for the beleagured Palestinians or the Middle East.

First your statement is totally false. Hamas never made any such statements. Second, it was the US and Israel who demanded that elections be held by the Palestinians before any more negotiating could begin. elections were held and when the results were not to the liking of both the US and Israel, both parties refused to honor their own promises yet again. Either you are working for the Israeli lobby and helping to spread disinformation or you have been under the spell of the Israeli lobby here. In any case you owe every Palestinian an apology and yourself an education.
It is important to emphasize the distinction between the people and the political powers which dictate their lives. A frustration for many Americans is the foreign policy as well as domestic agenda carried out in our name. The Israeli lobby, along with the fellow American Neo-cons causally and powerfully speak in our name but often do not represent us. We suffer not only at the hand of others, but most deeply when our own leaders policy creates the conditions for strife, violence, class oppression and deep divisions within. The elite, the politicians, the industrialists, the media empires, yes even the vocal opposition benefits from the prolonged conflict. The residents, the families, and their communities suffer and battle the despair of increasing powerlessness. This geography was in similar situation 2000 years ago, when Jesus, a ethnic Jew, lived as one of the mass of people. So effective his framing of the issue, and the sacrifice of his own life, that his followers almost immediately began a mission in concentric circles, Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the world. They learned the principle and put it into effect quickly, although much NT discussion involves the struggles (both success and failure) to live this new vision. The struggle with divergent cultures, old loyalties, and a religious power base ready to recapture power and position. Rome, like the United States today, brought great power into regional struggle, and within the first three centuries, brought the church within their influence. Tragically religious leaders today also struggle with political ambitions sanctifying political violence with religious platitudes.
