   The word scrotum makes me laugh, makes me smile. Remember Kevin’s brother, Wayne, calling him “Scrot’” on the Wonder Years? This would have been my favorite book as a child.

   Here’s a quote from “quality literature” (in which, for the Lord’s sake, LOTS of genitalia of all descriptions shows up): “We are slowly destroying the world.”

   We are tearing it apart with climate change, the wanton waste of our natural resources, all our toxic habits, not to mention our warmongering habits, not to mention our many other sins as a species — and these folks find the time to get upset that “scrotum” shows up in a book for children? I would hope that my 10-year old already knows what a scrotum is — and I’d hope that is s/he didn’t, s/he’d come ask me! And I agree - it’s a GREAT word.

   The demand that names of selected body parts not be spoken is an extension of other silences demanded - that of history for example or mental illness or spousal abuse or PTSD, veteran poverty and the multi BILLION $ advertising budget for the military recruitment of our youth, the lies of the president - shall I continue?

   Make a list of that which ’should remain unspoken’ and you draft the profile of cultural manipulation tools that also deny other cultures (ooh - They do/say THAT??)- such as the biological/ecological contributions of Indigenous peoples like the Mbyá Guarani in SA who were referred to as ‘primus verus systematicus’ by none other than Carl von Liné and in 2000 finally seeing anthropologists write about the the profound cultural stewardship that never sold out - we now need them and have to slog through the silent detritus in order to do so.

   Hush hush is one of the primary ways the rich and beautiful truth all around us every day is attempted to be made invisible by the domination system that wants you to think it is the sole architecture of the universe. I don’t have a scrotum but God made sure that it was attached where it needed to be. Thank you God, Buddah, Nhanderu, and all the other beaudacious names.

   amiable: conservatives for most part are very pleased with war mongering and environmental catastrophes. But they’re soooo uncomfortable in their own skins that body parts make them cringe.

   If only everyone would resume going naked…

   I don’t think this is a huge deal, but it is a little vulgar to talk about something biting a dog’s scrotum in a children’s book imo. It’s certainly nothing to get the vapors over. I don’t feel that the author is some sort of dangerous subversive. Rather I think he just used poor judgement or perhaps wanted to entertain himself or create a stir in order to sell books? I could see it appearing in a book for teenagers or adults, but for kids?

   But conservatives love to latch onto anything and dub it some sort of leftist conspiracy. As if liberals let their 6 year-olds watch “The Aristocrats”.

   LOL, my son is 22 now but if I had read him that book when he was young, he would have loved it! It would have made him read the rest of the book.

   When he was a child he had a book, “Bears Picnic”. Papa bear got hit on the butt with lightning. It was his favorite book. I must have read it a hundred times. Every time I would come to that picture he would roar with laughter.

   When he grew older he would read the parts of the baby bear and I would read the part of the mama bear and the father bear with some voice changes. I actually recorded us doing this and will forever treasure it.

    I’m going to agree. I don’t think that it’s something that should raise a conservative battle cry. True, the author could have used a different scenario entirely, and avoided any mention of genitalia. But, if she’s going to use it, would they rather she refer to the dog’s “nutsack”?

    Taken in context, the word’s inclusion makes complete sense, ESPECIALLY if this story has anything to do with growing up.

    I agree, though I have to say our words are not heard by those very conservative people who oppose this, because they won’t read this site. I agree, a better word could have been used, but I worked for 2 years as a T.A. at a elem. school with 4-5th graders and they knew and understood lot worse words then scrotom. Yes for a male, 9=10 or up they not only understand it, some use it and most thinks its funny. Yes even the kids who come from those high moral, bible loving families, I hate to tell you, your kid thinks scrotom is a funny word.

    This worries me the most,

    Libraries all over the country have either banned the book or are considering banning it - citing either their own moral shock or the anticipation of a storm of protest from parents if they went ahead and stocked it.

    The pre-emptive censorship because of anticipated protests. I am also glad that I don’t live in Durango CO with such a ’sensitive’ librarian that can’t handle the word scrotum in a children’s book.

    I wonder where she comes down on the “Are you there god? Its me Margaret.” Judy Blume book that deals with breasts (stretching my memory back 25 years and may be a bit off with it) “I must, I must, I must increase my bust.”

    People are ridiculous. Do you know what kind of crap kids are saying and doing these days and what is even marketed for them to wear? And people are throwing a hissy fit about the work scrotum? Would we rather that they know the word scrotum or the vulgar term “nutsack?” personally, I would prefer that they learn proper anatomic terminology. It seems to me that the same people getting upset about this name for a body part are the same ones who are too shy to tell their kids the truth when they ask questions about their bodies or about sex. It’s a body part. Not a big deal. It’s only vulgar if stated or presented in a vulgar manner. So maybe check your own mind state before you turn someone’s innocent statement into something dirty because you’re too afraid to say the names of your own reproductive organs.
