As time goes on between GMO (genetically modified organizims)crops and factory farmed meats, it will be more and more critical to know from where and exactly how your food is raised/prepared. It can literally be a matter of life and death.
Go to farmer’s markets, start a coop, cultivate realtionships and $upport local food producers, and start gardening and become a seed saver.
Thanks for this great essay by a great writer. There seems to be a taboo, even amongst “progressives,” to raise the issue of animal suffering when the issues associated with factory farming are raised. The focus is usually on environmental harm, overuse of antibiotics, human health hazards associated with mass agriculture, and genetic modification as an abstract issue divorced from the animals that have been conceptually transformed into patented commodities.
The heart of the issue to me is the unimaginable suffering we inflict on other beings. Once you get a sense of that, becoming a vegan is really quite easy.
I am glad that it didnt just say: factory farming is bad–we need to go back to traditional small farms. Which were the type of facilities that made people like George Bernard Shaw go vegetarian and are bad in their own right. Small farms ship their animals to the same place.
Weebler, though there is a new growing type of small farm that feeds the land it utelizes and treats animals humanely. Check out “Omnivor’s Delimma” by Michael Pollan.
This writer is great and fantasticallyon message. But there is one statement I disagree with:
“The only sacrifices in the whole picture, in fact, are being made by non-human animals.”
The employees and those that live near these giant animal processing plants are certainly sacrificed and the general wellbeing of the consumers is too. It’s a whole picture sort of thing. Our inbalances always come back to haunt us.

These factory farms are an abomination, from such cruelty to animals it is only a small leap to abusing humans.
At times I wonder if our ‘apathy’is not a degree of PTSD from the removal of the step involving facing the creature providing us food and recognizing its life entering ours. That we dine without this sacred connection to life we either metaphorically or literally consume unidentified traumatized proteins.
