   My news and views come exclusively from the net (quasi-exception is occasional watching of C-Span for speecjhes and news conferences–which I do on the net and not from any cable connection thank you).

   Democracy Now with Amy Goodman gives me more worthwhile news in 10 minutes than all of the network shows combined. The Snoozehour with Jim Lehrer and NPR are increasingly inflitrated with establishmentarian and corporate views and no wonder as you listen to their list of underwriters.

   The performance of the print media (From the almighty NYT and WP to Newsweek, Time,etc– honorable exception Knight-Ridder and now increasingly AP) as well as the electronic network news during the past 4 years of war is enough to make me permanently alienated from them.

   I still remember when Generals Franks, Abizaid, and Galloway did their “press briefings” in Doha after the invasion of Iraq. The only credible journalists in the room were the Brits who didn’t just swallow their Rumsfeldian propaganda but challenged them when they either evaded or misspoke in their answers. Once upon a time America had journalists who did the same thing. How sad to see them muzzled.

   Muzzled is not the appropriate term, I would say, since that implies an imposition of some kind. It’s quite clear that the employees within the mainstream media are quite happy to sacrifice any sort of journalistic impulse they may have at some point considered. Obviously, status and money are their calling cards, with absolutely no intention of investigating anything, much less reporting actual news. Most of them show up at work each morning and they are handed a script. Others, like O’Riley and all those other pathetic hosts of the endless list of polarizing ‘news’ shows on cable are simply the biggest egos they could find, safely ranting their ‘rating catching’ slogans and prejudices from the confines of corporate media studios.
   No, muzzled is not the word, dear poet.
   Paid, perhaps.

   While I likewise rely on the web and our local “Democracy Now” broadcast, one unfortunate side effect is increasing lack of knowlege and interest in local events. Our local print and TV journalists (in Pittsburgh) can still give activism some fair coverage, (between the other sleazy stories to be sure). Amazingly, sometimes the best local coverage comes from the local right wing broadsheet and FOX channel. Thus, it is still important to read the local news, watch the local TV and engage with local journalists.
