Dyer certainly raises a very important question here. As she says, it’s “not a hypothetical discussion.” But I don’t have enough of a “feel” for Gen Pace, yet, to have any judgement about this.
One does actually acquire a fairly reliable sense of these public figures, after a while. We certainly know that Bush & Cheney are just itching to bomb Iran; & many of us knew that Colin Powell was lying at the UN 4 yrs ago. // But with Pace, at this time, I just have no idea. He’d have to be an exceptional guy, to resign under those circumstances.
Great article from Dyer, whose work I have read and appreciated for years. Having had a long career in psychology I admit I view events from a somewhat skewed perspective, but it appears to me the term most applicable for the situation in which General Pace finds himself is “integrity.” This word, and what it represents, is the biggest missing piece in american public life today. If more leaders had it there would be less disrespect for the institutions they claim to serve.
This lack of integrity is epidemic in the corridors of politics, and it is why I personally believe people Colin Powell will not fare well in the retrospect of History. Maintaining ones integrity requires an authentic act of courage, and so it isn’t easy. Taking orders against one’s principles, however, is an act of mediocrity. The choice nevertheless lies with Pace himself. After all, it may be that his principles are in perfect alignment with following orders.
Situations like this require a gut check, he will show us who actually resides inside there. It seems to me that if he is a conscious individual, who is responsible for himself and his actions, then resignation would be his most appropriate choice. If not then I am afraid he will be added to the ever growing list of poor unaccountable lost souls in recent american political history.
Doesn’t matter. If Pace refuses, he gets fired (perhaps as an “adulterer”), and we get another Boykin in his place.
General Pace is playing along with Bush, and he is trying to be tricky. By saying he has no knowledge that orders came from higher ups in the Iranian government, he is trying to positively estanblish that the weapons came from Iran, which the Iranian government adamantly denies. He is playing good cop bad cop. I think the American people should trust him as much as they trust the Lier-in-Chief.
Another possible way to discourage what would be a repitition of the Iraq fiasco is to pressure military officials directly. Point out to them that a unilateral order to launch an unprovoked attack without the consent of Congress would be an illegal order. Following such an order would make them war criminals.
The service chiefs that make up the Joint Chiefs of Staff have no formal or legal command authority over the United States military. The National Command Authority (NCA) is the President and Secretary of Defense.
When military units are tasked from their administrative units (like the numbered armies, navies, air forces, etc) to a deployment they are handed over to the regional commanders (like Southern Command, Northern Command, European Command, etc). These regional commanders report to the Secretary of Defense and President (NCA).
The role of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is to develop military doctrine, training, and to serve as an advisor to the NCA.
