As a committed atheist, I have always thought that religion is not the enemy, moral absolutism is. At least the kind of moral absolutism promoted by the Falwells, Dobsons and Robertsons of the world.
For all its institutional ills, It is to the credit of modern Catholicism that it makes room at its liberal fringe for Sister Chittister’s moral relativism - a kind of anathema to the absolutist hearts of all popes, including the late beloved John Paul II. The dangers of it to catechetic tidiness are clear, but the moral labyrinths into which we are inevitably led once we choose to become moral beings are not at all clear. Once we succumb to the intuition that there is a right/wrong, correct/incorrect, intelligent/endarkened, honest/dishonest, positive/malignant way to behave both personally and collectively, the word “ought” creeps into the picture and we become citizens of a moral universe. In my own cosmology one “ought not” become an absolutist, a documented source of many evils. But the alternative, to attempt to enlist the mind and heart to understand the moral choices we must make daily is a confusing and daunting undertaking. It is not a life for those who dislike thought or require simple rules of conduct, but it is an exercise that, if pursued earnestly, can lead to mental agility, tolerance, charity (etc.) and even wisdom. Joan Chittister always reminds me that intelligent people are, after all, better people.
So what this says is that the Irish people can’t manage to do anything in their community but drink alcohol and now they want the government to help them drink their alcohol? Are you kidding?! Morality is not the question here; alcohol is destructive to the mind and body when constantly ingested. Get some social programs going for these alienated old or young people and turn this into a positive so that people can bond without destroying brain cells. Drink is fine but if your society falls apart because people can’t sit and drink alcohol(a drug just like any other drug, you know) all night, you are really in trouble.
