**I get the gist but its arrogant in terms of language–humans behave far worse than “beasts”–which is why the definitions of “humane” and “inhumane” are so perverted. Ok so we are supposed to believe that kindness is the natural state of humankind. Fine. Idealistic maybe, naive perhaps, but ok. But then the opposite of that is inhumane, or to behave in a non human way–suggesting that nonhumans engage in the sorts of depravity that humans are expert at. Simply not true. Not by scope or scale. In the Roman Colliseum they used to force blind people to fight each other–children to fight children, perform violent recreations of Greek myth–all for the amusement of tens of thousands of spectators. Do cats erect stadiums to watch other cats torment mice? No.
Only humans can be demonstrated to take pleasure from the suffering of others–knowing it is suffering. I think Mark Twain observed as much. And humans are the only species oberved to engage in mental torment. I think humans are special–just not in very positive ways.
Furthermore–I sure hope the entire article was a joke-including the Washington Post reference-because the revelation that chimps use tools as weaponry dates back to the late 1960s or 70s. Talk about recycling old news!
