   Thank you for the article. I am a feminist myself and am quite dissatisfied with how this political system continues to try and categorize based on sex, class and race. Hillary needs to take a backseat and realize the only way she would come close to winning in this country is if she switched parties. The Democratic party needs leaders like Barack Obama and John Edwards who have shown no reason to be deceitful, unlike Mrs. Clinton.

   As for Hillary, the only thing she’s missing that differentiates her from the males is she lacks a penis. And like the rest of ‘em, she has no heart. She’s everything the “men” are. Vicious, cruel and just as willing to murder innocient men, women and children as any of the evil people. (Bill had his Waco, GWB his Iraq, and Hillary would surely have hers–somewhere)

   And I’m sure Corporate loves her.

   Really good opinion piece and thanks for the surprise! Here I was reading this and expecting another male bashing diatribe. I was also expecting the writer to endorse Ms. Clinton just becuase she is a woman. That is my biggest fear about this election - that women will vote for a woman solely because she is a woman. There are so many more intelligent and practical women in politics who would be better presidents than the ambitious, polarizing Hillary.

   People are talking about the notion of wanting to vote for Hilary Clinton simply because she’s a woman. Hell, I’m a white guy, and I want to vote for Obama simply because he’s not a WASP or old money.

   Take heart, in predominatly Muslim countries (as in repressive backwards Muslims) they already have had female heads of government (Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan and President Megawati of Indonesia. Chilie probably the most reactionary country south of Central America has a female Presidente Michelle Bachelet. Bachelet is all the more remarkable for determining that 50% of her cabinet will be female as a matter of policy.

   Women bring a dimension of understanding into the councils of government that is greatly lacking and sorely needed in this messed up world today.

   One has to wonder whether Hillary is simply responding the way her financial supporters want her to. Still, it would be foolish to think that she will change and become progressive once in office.

   Of course, as with most, writers of political possibilities, Ms. Milazzo has overlooked who would make an INCREDIBLE first lady–
   Elizabeth Kucinich. That would be the wife of Congressman DENNIS KUCINICH who, in fact has been 100% anti-war from BEFORE the beginning!
   It’s bad enough that the media ignores this couple, but when those who say they want EXACTLY what Kucinich offers ignore him–then I see no real hope for change in this popularity-contest-media-driven political system.

   I very much appreciate your op-ed piece about Hillary and understand your concerns.

   However, what concerns me is that any woman who is formidable enough to hold her own and be a real contender for president in the present political environment, will most likely have those qualities we would not necessarily notice, and actually have come to accept, in a male candidate. After all, people are now screaming for Al Gore to run again even though, in my opinion, he gave up much too soon in his fight for the presidency and made some very bad judgment calls while running for president himself. We don’t hold that against him in perpetuity.

   I like both Barack Obama and John Edwards; however, if Obama were a black woman with as little experience as he has, would she be given the same support and confidence the American people are now freely giving to Mr. Obama? I doubt it. I do believe he has a great future, but I don’t think he’s ready to be President, just yet.

   John Edwards is no longer a member of Congress. Therefore, he is in the perfect position to speak freely and openly on just about any subject. However, in the real world of politics, would he really have the freedom to do everything he says he would do, if we would only elect him? I doubt very seriously that he would be so bold were he still a member of the Senate and we shouldn’t be too quick in forgetting what it takes to affect change in our government these days and neither should Mr. Edwards.

   My concern is that far too many women in our country, and not just the men, still hold any female candidate to standards no one could live up to. Standards we would never hold to any male candidate.

   As for me, I’m going to give Hillary the benefit of a doubt, which most everyone automatically gives to any male candidate and take a wait and see attitude as to how she evolves over the next year and a half, as well as how she handles herself during the debates, as compared to her male counterparts.

   That’s when I will decide whether Hillary is deserving of my vote or not.

    Ok, now let’s talk about the women in the little pink houses. Spectacular leadership potential. Every one of them. Imagine the positive influence they may have on their communities. Imagine the stabilizing effect they may have on public policy, especially federal policy. Imagine them saying no to war, and the war thus ending. Imagine the production from their gardens. Imagine them saying no to the next freeway expansion. And thus fewer profits for ExxonMobil. And more prosperity all around. Energy security in America and food security in Africa, thanks to the positive influence upon US federal policy from the women in the little pink houses.

    Right on. Women are born leaders, but I can’t believe how little has actually been accomplished culturally for women in the interim in this country.

    the time is coming to complete unfinishing business — the women’s movement, including women enslaved abroad by religion, poverty and retrograde men.

    Yes, Kucinich exists…I’m guessing that, since unlike Obama and Edwards, he is everything that Clinton is not, Milazzo didn’t bother to mention him because she thinks he can’t win. I wish I could be so sure about stuff like that.

    Even if it were true, it would still be good to help E. and O. focus.

    But maybe Kathleen’s right, we should forget about all three of these guys because the President’s not really powerful enough to advance a progressive agenda to begin with…geez, when’s the last time someone tried that? Right now, our country is obviously going down the tubes and I don’t see how all of this defeatism masquerading as realism is going to protect us in the future.

    In this quote Obama told the Chicago Tribune September 26, 2004, ” if Iran is resistant to these pressures [to stop its nuclear program], including economic sanctions, which I hope will be imposed if they do not cooperate, at what point … if any, are we going to take military action?”

    How come we have so much Amesia. Kuninich played dead the alst election to side with Kerry.

    “Kucinich can’t win” is the mantra of those who will settle for republocrats who will sell them out before the race has even begun. We would be better if those “realist pessimists” would stay out of politics. Kucinich can win if we support him! As for women, Cynthia McKinney has always been right and has never hesitated to speak truth to power which is why she gets bad press in the corporate media. Barbara Boxer is also a strong contender. Either we should stand up and fight with the best we have or we should sit down and shut up.

    Ah, yes, good old Golda Meir, who famously said “There is no Palestine people. There are Palestinian refugees” and made several other racist, revisionist remarks (like this one: “How can we return the occupied territories? There is nobody to return them to. We can’t send it to Nasser by parcel post.”) that only an amoral pig could utter. And who could largely take a good bit of responsibility for the horror that area of the world lives under and has sucked us into.

    Not an encouraging example of warm, caring, peace-oriented female leadership, Ms Milazzo. Not to say a woman leader cannot be pro-peace, but I have yet to see one. They all seem to feel the need to prove they have balls. Bad enough when the men do this, pathetic when the women do it, for they, in fact, do not have them.

    Oh yes, you left out Maggie Thatcher, who I believe is Hillary’s role model.

    A truly disappointing piece of pandering that HRC would be proud of. Realizing that Hillary doesn’t make the cut, you assert that the next candidates leading the polls for Democratic nomination would make acceptable chief executives is overlooking much. You offer barely more than a bare assertion occasionally supported by a spousal endorsement. The options for progressives considering the next election are almost too good to choose from. Excuse me while I try and move on to something more productive, perhaps a nap will do.
