One of the main pillars upholding the existing US political system is the public’s unjustified notion that the Democrats are “the party of the people” and that they can be trusted to eventually “do the right thing.”
Nothing could be further from the truth. The Dems merely play “the peoples’ party” on TV. They smile more, sound more reasonable, & use softer rhetoric. But when push comes to shove, they (like their Republican partners) protect the interests of the big guys against those of “the little guy.”
The Dems are essentially a safety valve for the system, allowing it to continue to commit horrific crimes, yet never quite causing the masses to despair — because they mistakenly believe the Dems will eventually rescue them.
Anyone who expects more than posturing and capitulation from the Dems is naive. They are as pointed out above, the “good cop” head of the two-headed corporate party. Liberals who are joined at the hip to the dems and insist of “electable” moderate dems get the opportunist sleazebags that will dance to the corporate tune. Progressives should know better. We need to support genuine progressives inside and outside of the Democratic party. Don’t vote for anyone who is owned or for sale to big money and if we get them elected, don’t stop holding them to the fire. If you do, don’t complain about the results because you have met the enemy and it is yourself.
Too many authors on the left keep making the same mistake. It’s not about the nuclear weapons. The weapons are irrelevant. When Saddam Hussein completely complied with the Bush administration after “coercive diplomacy”, they want ahead and attacked anyway. The motive was not WMD, as we all know, but domination of the Middle East and its oil.
Exactly the same is true of Iran. Bush will attack no matter what the outcome of diplomacy is. In fact, Iran recently threatened to start trading oil in euros rather than dollars: the same issue that, in part, led to the attack on Iraq. As long as Iran is not one of “our regimes” (like nearly all the other Middle Eastern countries are), Bush will attack. It’s already been decided.
Dems curry favor with jewish voters and aipac/likud/israel: they got us into iraq!!!
remove them from the equation and we just may make a Just policy to cover the entire middle east
Amen phawxhurst! Although we will both be billed as racist anti-semetics for speaking the truth. How in the world did such a small minority get so much power. Personally, is someone did nuke Israel, I would count it as a plus.
And we voted in November…why?
P.S.
expatincebu,
Once again, you lost me with your “nuke Israel” hyperbole. I don’t think speaking out against Israel or their neocon supporters is anti-Semitic, but I do find the call for nuclear violence, especially against civilians, immoral.
That bunch we have in Washington are not real democrat’s. Reid is one of the weakest senate leader’s in history. They are gutless and a disgrace to the old Harry Truman democrat’s. this bunch of coward’s cater to Joe Lieberman when they should tell him to go to hell. We need Al Gore as president, he is the only one who could start to straighted out the disaster the idiot in the White House has gotten us into
I think theabove comments are too pessimistic. I think an attack on Iran can be prevented. I heard from the Sunday Times of London that five high officers in our armed forces are prepared to resign rather than participate in an attack. At least they know how disastrous it would be.
We need voices to present the legitimate grievances of Iran. Under Eisenhower we overthrewthe democratic govenment of Mossadeq and installed the shah as disctator. That finally blew up in our face in 1979. Then we supported our ally Saddam Hussein in a war against Iran that resulted in near a million casualties. Now we are threatening them with bombing just because we “believe” they mean to have a nuclear bomb. How stgrange they don’t seem to like us. But we can prevent this. It is so insane we must pull back.

I wish the above comments were too pessimistic but very unfortunately I don’t believe they are. The offer by five high officers to resign before attacking Iran means little unless they are among those that will be asked to carry out the attack. My guess is that they aren’t.
The die is already set from all of he indications that I have seen. The replacement of the commander in the middle east with an Admiral that is a specialist in air attacks. The movement of two aircraft carrier groups into the Persian Gulf along with mine sweepers to help keep the straits of Hormuz open. The deployment of Patriot missle batteries into the region. The sudden unannounced trips by Rice and Cheney to various governments in the middle east including stops at some that were not included in the original itinerary. The absolute unwillingness to change or alter a plan by the “Commander in Chief” once his mind is made up regardless of how foolish, stupid, or reckless that plan turns out to look even after new evidence is presented before it is put in place. The (I believe)false belief that an air attack carries a low risk of a wider war or retaliation. The false offer of diplomacy that requires the adversary to prove a negative which is impossible. The statements by the White House and admin that the military option is not off the table. The support of the Democratic leadership as pointed out in numerous recent articles which guarantees that the one thing that could stop an attack on Iran, the impeachment of Bush and Cheney, will not be implemented.
I most sincerely hope I am wrong and that I am misreading the indicators, and may God help us even though we don’t deserve it if this attack happens and inflames the whole Middle East and starts WWIII.
I will state once again, that should we get through this, I sincerely hope that the American voter will look at what is really going on and vote every last incumbent out of office, both Republican and Democrat.

I certainly agree, but have you ever tried to get a feeding hog to move away from the trough? Until we get the current hogs slopping at the trough out of office we will never get the corporate money out of politics.

Amen phawxhurst!
The question is: Can we start a movement - like the abolitionist movement of the 1830s -that can un-impale us from our very entangled and highly destructive alliance with Israel?
Israel is our worst enemy - a fact belied by holocaust sympathy, a Christian/Old Testament bent, innate racism, colonialist inclinations - and an imperialistic nature.
Well, the world “isn’t taking it anymore” - we either strengthen ourselves out, play nice with the world, cut off Israel - and usher into a new stage of human development - or our children we will pay for it out of their asses.
Abolition Now!!!
