   Civilians HAVE NOT and ARE NOT questioning the patriotism of our troops. What we are questioning is the way in which this administration interpreted and “used” intelligence information to get us into this war.

   The rationale for not only the initiation but the continuation of this war changes on a weekly basis; and anyone paying attention can see that we are in this war to control the flow of oil from the Middle East.

   When our government uses the rhetoric, “in the interest of America”, they are talking about our dependence on oil interests.

   The majority of the people in this country don’t want to see our troops getting killed every day to support the policies of elitist neocons who are raking-in millions and billions on war profits.

   “That I was just doing what my country asked me to do and I did it well.”

   Despite the obvious establishment spin that correspondent Logan’s questions implied, as one who watched the 60 Minute segment, I believe that the soliders, sailors, and marines interviewed came across as regular, stand-up, no-nonsense types who didn’t lose their brains or initiative by the dehumanizing experience of basic training.

   As someone who is old enough to remember the Vietnam protests, something like this never happened. We have currently serving active duty troops dissenting with war policy and getting prime time news coverage. Bravo to all of them and to 60 minutes for airing their grievances.

   In the article and dialouge, it seems assumed that we invaded Iraq with good and just intentions but now it’s out of control. I don’t think that such pragmatic dissent is as powerful as dealing with the truth of the whole matter.

   We entered Iraq AND Afghanistan for oil and allocation of this resource. We are still in Iraq because of this resource and until we concede this, we will only prolong this war and possibly get into such a mess in the future.

   I am a Vietnam Vet, Army/MACV 1968, and I do not believe war solves anything. So, in that, I do not agree with most of what I read in the interviews: these soldiers still believe in the use of force/violence to protect and defend this country. The fact that they are at least voicing some opposition to this particular military action is worth noting, but to give it praise for courage and extraordinary outspokenness is an exaggeration. The truly courageous ones are the conscientious objectors and those who refuse to participate in the violence and destruction of this administration’s policies. When are the defense contractors and private security companies going to be called upon to sacrifice some of their financial fortunes in the name of National Security and the Fatherland/oops I mean Homeland Security? I have personally withheld paying a substantial portion of my Federal Income taxes for 2005, and written and distributed letters about this fact. I am now being told by the IRS that they will begin tracking my assets for the purpose of taking what they say I owe. I have not heard of anyone, publicly, making this claim and taking this action. Perhaps I am a fool for thinking I can make a difference. But, it makes a difference to me that I am defunding the war as best I can. Congress is talking about it, but not doing anything about it. What about you, the reader, who disagrees with the Bush Wars? Are you willing to defund, personally? Or just ask that we bring the troops home, but continue to pay for keeping them there?

   It seems the only thing politicians understand is the Power of Money. Money is not a bad thing, but misused and abused, as it is in our political system, it becomes a destructive force. I emplore you to take a stand with your own money, and defund this war, now.

   While I support our troops in the sense that I want them safely home, I’m ticked off that they are participating in this illegal war. They are not doing what their country is asking them to do - only what the unelected occupants of the administration offices are asking them to do. When most of the country was bamboozled by the miscreant in the oval office, military personnel could logically make the claim that they were serving their country. Now that reality has dawned on most of the country and it wants them home, they cannot. They are now doing only what that miscreant wants them to do. And they are wasting our children and grandchildren’s wealth doing it.

   We should never arm swashbuckling children that take their responsibility to the law so lightly. The congress never declared war. The act authorizing the use of force was only constitutional if Bush had UN approval. The act did not withdraw the US from the UN, and therefore, we are bound by the UN charter, a treaty that our constitution gives the full force of US law, which prohibits preemptive war. Military officers swear to uphold the constitution. Thus, they should be resigning their commissions rather than participating in this illegal war. The UCMJ requires all service personnel to disobey illegal orders. It would seem that orders furthering the war would fall in said category.

   Since the UN charter requires occupiers to establish and maintain order, we would be obligated to do so except the vast majority of the Iraqi people have indicated in poles that they want us to leave. Apparently, they see that we are making the situation worse by being there, are afraid we will end up handing control of their oil to international oil companies, and believe they can handle their country and its resources without our help.

   I am 51 and grew up during the Vietnam war error, Which we now know was escalated based on lie about a non-existent incident in the Gulf of Tokin.
   They lied boys! When are going to start getting it. It’s their war and your blood.

   Now I understand about you wanting to serve your country and protecting freedom and I respect that. But it is not about freedom!
   When in the hell was Saddam Hussein every threat to our freedom..
   His military was fifth rate not even a threat to his neighbors never mind a superpower.
   Even if he had WMD to you honestly think he would have been stupid enough to use them.
   He his country would have been toast! And he knew it.
   This a country that had been under 12 years of UN and United States imposed sanctions
   Which has been estimated to have caused the death of some 500,000 children.
   They couldn’t get the necessary basic medical supplies., to save those children.
   Now that what I call spreading democracy .

   After the first gulf war he destroyed all is WMD because of risk it posed to is country and it’s people by having them.
   Just remember Colin Powell’s (one of your own), performance at the UN.
   with Tenet and Negroponte right behind him supporting everything he said like props.
   They knew that it was bullshit. The cartoon depictions of supposed mobile Bioweapons Labs.
   They were cartoons because real one’s didn’t exist.
   Is that the kind of leadership you want to die for? They sold you out because they didn’t have the
   Courage to question the allegations put forth by the administration.
   Why? Because they feared for their own careers over your blood.
   It was also our gutless politicians! Patriotism my ass!

   John Kerry was forced to apologize to the troops after saying they’d end up in Iraq if they couldn’t afford an education. Go figure.

   Would the Peace Corps be as seductive an option as the military is to kids who think they are privileged to carry an M-16?

   Not surprising that Watada wasn’t mentioned in this interview. It seems that case is quieted, sort of like the Italian journalist Segrena a few years ago that was suddenly hushed.

   The soldiers interviewed might have the right idea, but haven’t executed their strategy wisely. To follow in the foosteps of Watada would make them true heroes. If we had one presidential candidate as noble, courageous and intelligent as Watada, we’d be in good shape.

    Too bad that our sissy Congress doesn’t have the backbone of our soldiers. I can’t serve in Iraq because of my age, but I would go to Canada rather that fight in this illegal and ill-advised war. Hurray for the soldiers. Too bad that no one will listen.

    There are many ways to be courageous and this is a very personal choice. These guys currently serving in the military are very vulnerable among their cohort and must speak carefully I think, but their actions should help other soldiers to speak up. Hopefully more will follow Watada’s path. Courage is contagious, so maybe their commanding officers will get stronger, braver and closer to saying “No” this illegal war. It looks like General Peter Pace is beginning to set the stage for this, at his level, because he is talking about how the war is weakening our armed forces.

    I am afraid to not pay taxes, but I have just found out that all of my horrible debt is more horrible than I realized, in that the huge, well known international bank I bank with helps to fund the war. So, I’m going to set about moving my debt to a local bank to lessen my financial support as much as I can. I do like the peace tax fund idea.

    I will try to be brave wherever I can. I will march on the Pentagon, even though I’m paranoid about Big Brother watching us. I will keep asking my elected reps to be brave and more effective and I hope all of our efforts will eventually coalesce into an effective brake on the insanity of Bush & Co.

    Watada is for peace? Didn’t he say he’d fight in Afghanistan? Several of the guys quoted in the CBS article come off pretty gung-ho.

    WASP/MIL cultural rule says, keep your mouth shut. It’s unwhite, and therefore, “ungentlemanly” to talk out of turn. The message: a soldier can be against the chain of command’s decision as long as they do their job (ie march).

    It isn’t an issue of antiwar, it is an issue of choice.

    They’ve come to the conclusion as the majority of US: the Iraq war sucks. War of choice isn’t attacked, it’s the management of war. Hell, America isn’t antiwar today, they are against losing. America hates to be a loser. Nothing provocative here, the Media needs to find the story that reinforces the mainstream thoughts circulating at the local waterhole. (and BTW, Rambo is coming back to the screen– nooooo!)

    On taxes and not paying them.the State will levy, and add interest, and seize property, and ultimately take more away from the individual than what he/she withheld. I grew up in Alaska and watched this thing unfold time after time.

    The individual could just as effectively reduce their taxable earnings to such an extent that they no longer are contributing to the larger system. I realize Bush decided to levy 10% at 00.00 dollars up to $7500

    Another way to buck the system is to not join, even if everyone else subscribes to the show.
