A Dept. of Peace may provide critical resources the American people need to assume responsibility and control over US public policy.
If this Jim McDermott is Congressman Jim McDermott, first let him say as much. McDermott, state your credentials or explain why you haven’t.
As [small "c"] citizens, we have no voice, no pulpit, no standing. But you have. Go on and commit “political suicide,” call the Decider a murderer, a thief, a disgrace. You probably won’t live the rest of your life as a penniless paraiah. What do you have to lose?
Peace? It was never the American Way… maybe 35 years of peace in our 230 year history. Quit screwing around and call the Resident a warmonger in aid of his criminal enterprise. If that makes you poor, I promise to feed and house you. I promise.
One additional bureaucracy I would support.
I like the idea, except it may make the corporate Dems look good. Another idea is for McDermott, Kucinich, Frank, Sanders, McKinney, Lee and other progressive Dems to get together and change their party affiliation to the Green Party. They could still vote with Dems, or even with Reps in rare circumstances, but they would never again be taken for granted. The GP encompasses ALL progressive values and could become the rallying point for the liberal non-voting majority. We need a strong, united progressive opposition to counter the ubiquitous conservative neo-con/religious fanatic minority that has taken over. Something we won’t have with the corporate duopoly.

This plan for a Dept of Peace should not ever be treated as a pipe-dream. It is comprehensive and very well thought out. It needs lots of informative publicity. People don’t understand what it is.
There has never been a time we needed it any more than right now!
Barbara Marx Hubbard had proposed a Global Peace Room in 1984 during her campaign for Vice President. As a futurist, she projected its realization to be in the 21st. Century.
Your Bill to establish a Department of Peace is an idea whose time has come. When I file my 2006 Income tax, I would feel much better that a small portion of the military budget would be going toward Peace.
I look forward to the passing of this Bill.
There was a time - too long ago, too many deaths ago, unfortunately - when so many of us were doing whatever we could to influence the flow of events away from talk and threats of war and toward peaceful methods of bringing the situation in Iraq to a satisfactory resolution; a time when so many of us knew beyond a doubt that bombing Iraq was definitely not the best way. Unfortunately, G.W. Bush, the great Decider, wasn’t listening to us, neither us in our country nor others in our world. Yet, many of us persisted … until we dropped the first bombs … and then we switched from “Don’t start a war” to “Stop the war!” But there was a point when I became aware that our efforts were futile because our president wasn’t listening … because he wasn’t capable of listening. That was the moment on Meet the Press (Feb. 8, 2004) when he said:
“I’m a war president. I make decisions here in the Oval Office in foreign-policy matters with war on my mind. Again, I wish it wasn’t true, but it is true. And the American people need to know they got a president who sees the world the way it is. And I see dangers that exist, and it’s important for us to deal with them.”
That was (and still is) the problem - he has war on his mind … instead of peace … which means he isn’t really capable of having peace on his mind. He sees dangers to the exclusion of opportunities. The world view is what is to him because of the way he sees it. He isn’t capable of seeing things from a peaceful perspective and finding peaceful solutions. In effect he declared himself unfit to pursue a peaceful path to bring the situation in Iraq (or anywhere else) to a peaceful resolution. And the Department of Defense - all those people who are trained in seeing military solutions - provide no counterbalance whatsoever.
The only way we can provide for a counterbalance is to create a Department of Peace, with people who are inclined toward and trained and practiced in finding peaceful solutions. Only with peace on one’s mind is it possible for one to find peaceful solutions. Only with a department full of people with peace on their minds will it become possible for peaceful solutions to gain the respect and political weight necessary for them to prevail over violent solutions.
Yes, the world is full of dangers. The world is also full of opportunities. War and other kinds of violence are not the only possible solutions to disagreements. It has been said that the ways of war are outmoded. I agree. Solutions based in understanding, kindness, compassion and even love are also viable if given a chance and properly implemented. Let’s give them a chance. Let’s do all we can to help them work.
Even though I don’t practice peace in my own household as well as I would like to, I fully believe that a Department of Peace would help bring humans closer to their potential of compassionate, kind beings.
We all have a good side and bad side in us, and which one will grow depends on which one we feed. For far too long we have been feeding our dark side with greed, violence, and selfishness through the use of war, oppression, and over-consumption. We fail to have consideration for our planet and people. We have to come to the realization that we are all connected, and that we all effect each other.
Most actions of people are either based on love or hate. Fear plays a factor as well because it makes it easier to act out of hate.
