This is truly disgusting. The FDA has never been about serving the American people or ensuring safe and affordable drugs. It has been about profits and control for drug companies.

Foods and many plant products have well know medicinal properties. The FDA refuses to acknowledge their effectiveness/benefits or fund their research since these are naturally occurring products, i.e. not patentable.

And don't forget the Controlled Substances Act. It calls for prohibition of any drug with an UNDEFINED "high potential for abuse". The glaring exceptions are for those drugs that are "widely prescribed medicinally". If that doesn't mean that pharmaceutical companies exercise the only veto power against the Drug Czar I don't know what does. And yes, "widely prescribed" bears a high correlation to pharmaceutical profits because their promotion determines usage.

You act like this is "new". The Republicans have no use for any agency that attempts to act in the best interest of the public...just take a good look at the mess surrounding emergency contraception or Plan B. The only way any of this will change, is for the public and the Democrats to actually get together and pass a law or two restricting the Dubba's interference with the activities of the FDA. I also like the idea of nationalizing drug companies. . .
