America doesn’t have a poor excuse for poverty, they have no legitimate excuse at all.
In my opinion poverty would be practically non-existent in this country if it weren’t for the treasonous, yes a strong term but true, actions by the U.S. Government to encourage U.S. based corporations with tax and other incentives to move their production lock, stock, and barrel offshore. Knowing full well the whole time that it would benefit only the rich at the expense of the middle class and the poor. Then for good measure and to insure the destruction throw in inshoring through lax immigration enforcement, and programs such as H1-B to take the few jobs that are left. As a final measure destroy the great equalizer, a good public education system, by overburdening the system with requirements to teach those who are here illegally, cannot speak the native language, and pay no taxes to support the system. Insure social promotion of everyone guaranteeing that we will graduate students who cannot read or write. Then gnash our teeth and complain about the system we have created, using that as justification for having to move overseas to find workers who can do the job.
Conspiracy theorist? Not usually but the facts are in plain sight for everyone to see. What other conclusion can there be?

If I cannot have a happy life who cares about everyone else.
I believe Americans are all chasing the illusion of becoming one of the elite rich who will be the beneficiaries of spoiling the rich. I also see us as ignorant, why would we solve a problem that doesn’t directly affect us on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis? The answer is we wouldn’t and probably won’t until the results of our ignorants becomes unbearable. I like to be hopeful, through more information and compassion this generation will make poverty prevention a priority.
