Well, YES! In fact, HELL YES! Where indeed are the voices in Congress which represent the majority of the public’s antiwar position? Where has it *ever* been in this failing democratic experiment? (See Chalmers Johnson on Democracy Now yesterday Feb.27 for some comment on this in his book “Nemesis” and the future of American imperialism vs. American democracy.)

I argue (along with Chomsky and others) that this *is* a divided country — but not along a Democrat/Republican line. Along the line dividing public policy from public opinion. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to argue (as Nader does) that both “wings of the Corporate Party” have made the cynical (and correct, given the terrain of the current system of “elections”) calculation that normal folks’ opinions couldn’t mean less. They correctly realize that a system of legalized bribery must be adhered to with a most strict discpline. We don’t need to look far down the memory hole to see a good example of this — Pelosi and her band of merry pranksters, as their very first public act, took appropriations control “off the table.” Of course, no surprise there. It was decided long before hand that there was just too much profit going to the ‘right’ members of the ‘Ultra-wealthy’ class through the domestic and international crime wave that is the military occupation of Iraq.

We need a viable third party.

    It is that simple.

Why aren’t the Democrats bringing up that Zogby Poll from Feb 2006:

An overwhelming majority of 72% of American troops serving in Iraq think the U.S. should exit the country within the next year
    http://www.zogby.com/NEWS/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1075

In other words, MOST of the troops want to be home NOW!

This should be a CommonDreams headline as well.

  3. alaskawatch February 28th, 2007 1:41 pm

I guess I assumed Congress was elected to represent US citizens and reflect the wishes of the voters.

We voted Republicans out and Democrats in to end the war in Iraq.

Instead, the House passed a non-binding resolution and the Senate does nothing.

Our troops are dying because Congress is worried about the 2008 elections or who is going to inherit this war. This is madness. Stop the war, get our troops home, impeach Bush and Cheney. Do something honorable and cut the rhetoric.

  4. RichM February 28th, 2007 1:55 pm

By any serious criterion, both parties richly deserve to be banned. The R’s, vicious liars though they are, are in some respects less deceitful than the D’s, because the former at least makes no bones about being the agents of the oligarchy, catering also to racists, xenophobes & religious fanatics. The D’s, however, pretend to be better than that, & really are not. It’s their pretense of standing for the “little guy” that makes them so ridiculous. Working hand in glove, the 2 parties make the US govt simply an appendage of the corporate oligarchy.

The Dems’ feeble attempt to ever-so-slightly criticize the “surge” (non-bindingly, of course!) was an incredibly disgusting display of cowardice & lack of principles, but no surprise at all. It’s what the Dems are made of.

  5. davidc February 28th, 2007 2:00 pm

The Democrats should begin immediately with great zeal toward impeachment of President Bush. Most Americans know in their hearts that Bush lied to us and to the world. If the Dems don’t seek impeachment of this man, perhaps one of the most dishonest Presidents in U.S. history, it will be as if they’re saying its ok for the President of the U.S to lie. It will be an enormous disservice to the country. Its not revenge that Americans want, but accountability. No one is above the law, and that includes the President.

  6. Jaded Prole February 28th, 2007 2:05 pm

One of the few things that will “light a fire under the Dems” is the possibility of an alternative candidate. Without something to bargain with we are powerless and taken for granted. Though this corrupt systme is stacked against alternative candidates getting elected, their pressence makes the Dems shake with fear and we can say “give us so and so or forget it” and they will listen.

  7. namvet67 February 28th, 2007 2:44 pm

Until Congress is not a part of the occupied territories it will do nothing to stop the White House from launching a nuclear war.

  8. gsemsel February 28th, 2007 4:29 pm

We’ve been seriously victimized by the Democrats we elected thinking they would do a great deal more than pass a whimpy, meaningless resolution not worth the hot air it floated through the capital. They have not given us a voice. In fact, they have given us nothing, and if I read today’s reports accurately, they do not intend to do anything about the war, or anything else of concern to those who elected them. Their disinterest and inaction are reasons I have left that hopeless party.

  9. Optimist February 28th, 2007 4:40 pm

Everyone in Congress knows that this war is wrong and that it needs to stop now. Everyone in Congress should know that this administration is constantly violating the Constitution; if they are not sure, they need to ask any eighth grade Civics student.

What holds them back from being more assertive about what they all know? If they are afraid that they will not be re-elected, be comforted by the fact that they will not be the first to lose an election for standing up for what is right and just. Could it be that the Corporations are determining how they think and vote?

  10. drwu February 28th, 2007 4:45 pm

Enablers..that’s the word for the Dems.

Get a grip folks…dems or repubs –they all support one big bipartisan all-world imperium.

From Mid East Oil to full spectrum dominance the good ole USA wants the whole enchilada.

  11. alank February 28th, 2007 4:55 pm

Are you ready to see something happen fast?

If 50,000 Dems were to switch their registration to Green tomorrow, there would be a “No to escalation” vote in Congress next week, and impeachment would be back on the table the following week.

Time for America to mature politically. We’ve been hog-tied by the phony 2-party myth all too long.

Go for it! SWITCH for Peace!

Every day we stay in Iraq makes it worse and harder to leave (which IS the neocon plan), enabled by cowering Democrats.

Forget the faux-patriotic rhetoric! It is time to stop funding this Mideast debacle. No good can come from the United States remaining in Iraq. Anyone who thinks this administration cares about the health, welfare and voting practices of the Iraqis any more than it did about residents of the Ninth Ward in New Orleans is mistaken.

The Bush administration wants to use military bases throughout the world to guarantee control and flow of energy resources. Bravado aside, this administration understands virtually nothing about the security of this nation. No one was even fired after the worst security breach in our history. It believes that superior firepower is all that is needed. Might makes right.

The administration shreds international treaties and laws with the ease that it shreds our Constitution. Since we aren’t in Iraq to help the Iraqi people, or even U.S. security, but rather for oil companies, every day that we stay is one day worse for Iraqis and for our security here at home.

The Dems know all this but won’t say it.

Put their feet to the fire and their backs to the wall: Make the SWITCH to the GREEN PARTY!

  12. Coyotita February 28th, 2007 5:07 pm

This is a divided country. It’s divided by those who have the courage of their convictions and those who don’t — and by default are then with Cheney and Bush, dancing to their tune. But whose playing the fiddle, if it isn’t big business? Those big fat donors to campaigns. The Democrats have got to give up trying to win and speak up for what is right and bingo! they win. But unfortunately as past campaigns have proven, the object is to win and so they must have the bucks for publicity and so they must pay the fiddler when all is said and done.

  13. clyde paige February 28th, 2007 5:23 pm

I’ve been afraid all along that Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are too weak to be the leaders of the House and Senate and so for Reid especially is proving me right.I agree the democrat’s should be in the republican’s face not only about the war but they should be drawing up articles of impeachment for Bush/Cheney’ that’s the only way to start cleaning up the disaster this worst administration in history has gotten us into.

  14. csommer February 28th, 2007 5:29 pm

What does he expect from a bunch of opportunistic, spineless amoebas?

  15. BigStir February 28th, 2007 5:37 pm

The only Dem in the Senate worth his/her salt is Feingold. All the rest are cowards. This administration ought to be impeached and then imprisioned. That there isn’t more of a uproar is proof that these two parties are really just one. Everyone’s more worried about American Idol,Anna Nicole, and Britney’s hair. That’s so sad. What’s it going to take for the public to wake up and start voting for third party candidates? So what if the don’t win, you build momentum AND get to sleep easy knowing you voted for someone different. This isn’t Reps vs. Dems anymore, it’s Change vs. Status Quo, and SQ is running away with it.Democracy? what a joke….Idiocracy is more like it.

  16. clairejoseph February 28th, 2007 6:01 pm

I am truly astonished at the lack of voice that the Democrats have given to the 70% of us that want this war to end and want investigations to begin. What the hell are they afraid of? Get nasty, just like the Republicans have done and mastered. I think that the only way to change this system is to have Publically Funded Elections. There are pleanty of activist groups out there pressing this issuue….They need our Support.

  17. tobee4 February 28th, 2007 7:16 pm

The behavior of the Congress is heinous in the extreme. By this time they should have had a plan devised and in progress. It seems to me that the Republicans are still in power. Their dithering and blathering is a disgrace. I wonder how it feels to be responsible for all the deaths and suffering they could alleviate if they acted to stop the funding and bring the U.S. Military home now. It does not seem to me that there is any vote worth the lives of the American and Iraqi people.

  18. iammyself February 28th, 2007 7:43 pm

I voted for Tom Andrews when he ran for Congress. He lasted 2 years. Why? Because he was smart and courageous enough to support the shutting down of Loring Air Force base in northern Maine, a relic of the Cold War. Mainers didn’t like losing jobs for any reason, so they sent Tom packing.

As Maine goes, so goes the nation.

  19. lor February 28th, 2007 8:33 pm

Congress is a disgrace. I am ashamed of all of them, but in particular the spineless do nothing Demos. All they care about is re election and “supporting the troops”. Ah, support means supporting them when they come home sick in mind and body. Walter Reed? Our troops are treated as cannon fodder and disposable. Cut the funding, bring them home and let us take our punishment for being aggressors and allowing an idiot to have a blank check for war. They should have known better. I did.

  20. kmcgee February 28th, 2007 8:56 pm

I also voted for, campaigned for and worked with [via various organizations] Tom Andrews over the years and, but for his continued commitment to progressive ideals, I’d be without hope. I am grateful he is taking the D’s to task. The D’s wimping out and, indeed, wholesale selling out, has become epidemic in proportion both in Maine and Congress. We need to keep the pressure on our state legislator and Congressional delegation. With Tom Andrews, we are in good company.

  21. ezeflyer February 28th, 2007 9:16 pm

Tired of being taken for granted? Like to see the corporate Democrats squirm a little? Alank has the right idea. But instead of fifty thousand Dems switching to the Green Party, let’s make it a million. A few thousand letters to our Democrat Congresspersons could be the start. They could read something like this:

    Dear Democrat Congressperson:

We put you in power so that you would end Bush’s Wars. Instead you are endorsing his plan. More hundreds of billions and more lives lost will be the result. You say that will show your support for the troops, but we think it will show your support for the oil companies and the military contractors who contribute to your campaign, while our troops continue to die.

We the liberal Democrat majority will no longer be taken for granted by the corporate conservative minority of big money Democrats who have taken over our former party of the people. This message is your notice that millions of us will be defecting to the Green Party as of today.

    Signed
    your name

  22. Kathlyn February 28th, 2007 9:59 pm

I visited the Washington State Green Party website:

    http://www.wagreens.us/home/

I got their address, phone and emailed them about joining the Green Party. I expect to send in my dues tomorrow. The Dems have sickened me for some time now and I want to thank the people who commented on this Tom Andrews story and suggested the Green Party.

  23. annied February 28th, 2007 10:15 pm

How about a relentless attack from the REAL deciders — the citizens of this beleaguered country??? Why are we so passive and silent in the face of such disrespectful and disastrous behaviour on the part of the folks WE elected? Do they actually represent what WE think and what we want for our larger community? I think not. Let’s get on it.

  24. Arline Prigoff March 1st, 2007 6:12 am

The extent to which the U.S. as a nation is
criminal in its policies in Iraq is evident in the fact that U.S. planes have repeatedly bombed civilian populations, killing women, men and children. The only way to preserve a civilized nation is to demand that the U.S. stop killing and conducts its international relations without use of lethal weapons. A WORLD OF PEACE, WITHOUT EMPIRES OR WAR, IS POSSIBLE! Peace is the goal we need to pursue NOW!

  25. Babygoat March 1st, 2007 7:40 am

So far, the Dem’s have only” Demonstrated” that the Repuglicians are still in power. To hell with the 2008 erection! We are only entering the third month of 2007! Get a grip!

Counter the slander- get angry – or Get Out!

Law breakers must be punished- crimes against humanity must be upheld. Should a Nuclear War break out next month (under the direction of Bush Co )…there won’t be an election in 2008 anyway!

  26. Rick March 1st, 2007 8:20 am

About the only thing this administration and congress will understand, is if 2 million of us, march across the lawn of the Whitehouse and too the capital building and physically throw them out on the asses!
They are bought and paid for by big business from the military contractors to the big pharma.
They truly have no interest in carrying out the wishes of the people.
They only concern is not a fending big business so they get themselves a nice high paying job after leaving the hill.
    63% of congress are millionaires.
So, exactly what do you thing they have common with the work day people? Nothing, and they care even less.
I think we the people sent two clear messages in November. Bring the troops
    Home and IMPEACH!
    They continue to ignore us.
So, I ask. Do we march? Or do we continue to allow them to act if the message
    We sent means nothing.
Throw them out on their asses!

  27. Nanoo March 1st, 2007 8:24 am

Shame on the Dem’s, they are just sitting there holding the fuse of the big bomb, while Bush is getting ready to light the match. If you think Iraq is a tragic mess, just wait for the attack on Iran. All this feel good talk about do you plan to attack Iran, and response of no plans yet but All options on the table, plus the facts of the military build up. Wake up Americans, we Lost any influence, we have no democracy. The people on the other side of the world will blame us because we failed to control our government.

  28. jan smith March 1st, 2007 9:39 am

We’re a Plutocracy, folks, have been for a long time, & things will get “worser & worser.” It’s gone way beyond choosing the lesser of two evils. Progressives everywhere need to unite and riot in the streets if necessary. However well we do preaching to the choir, ignorance, fear and apathy keep the majority from taking action. We’re like those frogs in a pan of warm water on the stove—by the time we realize we’re feeling really hot, we’ll already be cooked.

  29. e_austin March 1st, 2007 9:47 am

perhaps my vision has become narrowed as i’ve become more frustrated and jaded, but all i see is another “war to end war”. the rhetoric that comes out of the “peace” movement astounds me at times, what with all this talk of “fighting” for this or that and using militaristic language to describe our “demands” and our outrage. i understand that we’re frustrated, and i understand that anger can be expressed and embraced in healthy ways, but i cannot bear the thought of fighting another war (a small and bloodless one, but a war in principle all the same) for peace. if we REALLY want peace, i think we need to change the way we talk about it, for starters.

Gandhi didnt say “fight for the change you wish to see in the world”…that’s exactly the cowboy philosophy we’re conflicted with. he said “BE the change.” want peace? be peaceful. that doesnt mean smoke pot and spend your days picking flowers…PEACE is a verb. do it.

  30. richardpatten March 1st, 2007 10:36 am

We voted to end this freakin, stupid, pointless occupation of Baghdad. If the DLC and DCC Democrat members of the Corporate Party don’t get it, but instead worry about being labeled ‘weak on terror,’ they better figure that it is mostly Republicans that will label them and democratic citizens who will label them ‘weak, period’ and vote for some new ones with guts to act.

  31. Ethel March 1st, 2007 11:47 am

Right on. And once again, the media and everybody else ignore Dennis Kucinich, the one Congressman/pres.candidate who voted against the war (and against the Patriot Act) and has consistently advocated for a change in our foreign policy and national priorities. Most Democrats are too worried about campaign $$ from corporations and being re-elected to take a strong stand. The only way to stop Bush is to stop the funding (and impeach him & Cheney too).

  32. amitola March 1st, 2007 12:39 pm

It is pretty clear that the Democrats are not much different from the Republicans. Most of them are beholden to corporations and PACs and will generally put their own interests
(i.e., staying in power) ahead of the citizens of the USA. As I recall, the Declaration of Independence clearly outlines the procedure to be used when a government does not respond appropriately to the citizens – abolish it and start over. We have a perfectly good Constitution, we should start to insist that our “representatives” use its provisions and impeach those responsible for the lying and misuse of our hardearned dollars to perpetrate violence upon innocent people in our name – NOW. We deserve better! Americans – the people of America – do not want anything more than a chance to live their lives in peace. We need to make sure those who are supposed to be SERVING US get that message and do OUR WILL – whatever that takes. AMERICANS NEED TO WISE UP AND RISE UP for Peace before it’s too late!

  33. kayla March 1st, 2007 1:20 pm

We are getting the usual response to our voting efforts: once again, we are ignored by the Demo majority who are servants to corporate power, not the will of the people. We DO NOT NEED A P.R. CAMPAIGN! The majority of U.S. citizens and the world want an immediate end to this travesty and so do 70-some percent of the soldiers in Iraq. Since Congress won’t respond, we must stop it ourselves by REFUSING TO PAY FOR IT, AND REFUSING TO LET OUR CHILDREN SIGN UP TO BE SENT TO KILL AND BE KILLED. We must get over the myth that our government is by the people/for the people. Just don’t pay your federal income tax until the occupation ends. Period. Kayla, Ashland Oregon

  34. alank March 1st, 2007 5:22 pm

    Enough, already!

Send the message. Make the move. Switch to Green. Let them know we want democracy here.

    I like ezeflyer’s suggestion. Instead of 50,000 a million.

Just get started, and help spread the word, go to: Switch2Green.org

Maybe we can get a blog going there.
