Is this really a surprise to anyone? Power and wealth lies in those who control resources. Throughout history, those in power have dominated and exploited the resources of others. In our world today, Middle Eastern oil reserves will give great power and wealth to those in control of it. The neo-cons can say they want to spread freedom and democracy, but what they have always wanted is freedom to profit from other countries’ resources – whether that happens under a democracy or a dictator is irrelevant. They are not the first to have such goals, nor will they be the last. Our exploits in the Middle East have at their foundation always been about oil and other resources – no matter what noble goals we claim to have or enemies we imagine we need to destroy.
JHI your analysis seems quite accurate.
The agenda of private control over resources is left out of the news reporting. This leaves the public confused and divided regarding the root causes of the various problems (e.g. resource wars, hoarding, destruction, neglect), and less able to formulate effective public policy solutions.
An effective public policy, of, by and for people, would specify resource ownership and allocation in the public interest. For example the remaining fossil fuel would be allocated for consumption over a span of 2000 years. Such a reduced flow reduces the motive to make war, allows the environment time to absorb the excess carbon, and allows future generations benefit from the earth’s resources.
Effective governance allows sensible policies to find their way to implementation. Effective governance requires full public control over public policy.
The way for the public to retain full control is through mass action, boycotts, strikes. This requires education, i.e. civics class in K-12 curriculums. A typical lesson would show 2 out of 3 Americans working in effective slavery in the early 21st century at jobs that fail to provide net benefits to society, due to resource mis-allocation by those at the helm of industrial production. The student learns that this results from the conflict at the helm, between private and public interests. The student learns how mass action (strike, boycott), opens up opportunities for a larger number of smaller independent enterprises to grab a piece of the production. Thus, with production distributed among a greater number of small local enterprises, the public will is able to more effectively assert itself and have resource allocation and industrial production serve the public interest.
The public will becomes the authority and mass action (strike, boycott), become the enforcement lever for public policy in the public interest.
I somehow doubt that Russia is just going to take this lying down as they had a signed contract with Saddam to develop those fields. Nor do I believe al-Maliki can get the Parliament to go along with this travesty. Yes, it has always been about the oil. This area has been on the minds of the greedy oil barons since the first Gulf War when the first George was president. They tried cultivating a relationship with the Taliban in the early 90’s, had them down in Texas, gave them the $5.00 tour, thought all was well and that the Unocal Pipeline was in the works. Fast forward, the Taliban doesn’t need nor want a relationship with the West. The oil barons thought that they could win a war in the same timeframe the first George did, but what they failed to realize, he had the backing of the whole UN and had 1,000,000 ground troops. This war wasn’t financed by the rest of the world, basically just the American Taxpayer, with some bogus excuse about WMD’s. The present Washingtonians thought that they’d make the Taliban turn tail and run and the oil fields would be ripe for the plucking. Wrong. Mubarak told Bush to pay Iraq’s mililtary as they hadn’t been paid in months when he first went on this misadventure. Didn’t listen. There is no reason to continue caring about oil when there are more fuel efficient ways to manufacture cars. There is no way that I’d still be using something that’s controlled by my professed enemy. That’s not done on the streets of New York City. You don’t give your enemy that kind of power or control. All these people see are dollar signs. They can’t see the forest for the trees. Between their own weapons for sale and their appetite for foreign oil, woe to all that try to stand in their way of making more money off American consumers

Each of the above writers is spot on. And way back in 2003, so were Bush, Rumsfeld, Powell, etc. Each of these men said the oil of Iraq belonged to the Iraqi people. Right on! And just as the oil there belonged to the people there, so the oil and the iron deposits and the land parcels here belong, in their economic sense–their economic rent–to the people of America! Socialize land rent. It’ll pay for Bill’s public transit, Govmenow’s domestic research into energy independence, RTDrury’s public education, and establish the community control of natural resources that JHI champions.
This is an excellent article and series of comments. I had read the BBC article a while back about the USA plan to privatize Iraq oil industry, and am sickened by it.
I do have a question: has anyone checked into what inducements the Bush admnistration has offered these Iraqi officials to get them to push for this program?
Duh, what do we think the invasion of Iraq was about? Follow the money will lead you right to this landmark agreement. Remember the article in the NYT last week about the “discovery” of oil under Sunni lands for which the Iraqi government has spent tens of millions of dollars developing data,with able assistance of foreign oil companies? This agenda has been quietly carried out while our sons and daughters have been dying . Stay tuned to see how the story plays out.

The current leadership USA and their friends profit heavily from such a deal. Don’t use our military to guard “our” oil. Strongly bring about alternative fuels.

I heard about this end run to privatize a week or so ago, but the article does not mention the creation of a government body in which members of western oil companies will actually have seats. This is a crucial issue, since it empowers western oil companies at a level far beyond that in other countries with PSA’s. Anyone have details on that aspect of this travesty?
