   This is a speech that Senator Robert LaFollette, Republican from Wisconsin, made in the Senate on October 6, 1917, while America was involved in WW I.

   I found this by accident while browsing through a book of American speeches which made me look for an online version.

   This is a long speech even by earlier standards of Congressional oratory. However, don’t let that dissuade you from reading. You can pick and choose at almost any portion of it and get the impression Senator LaFollette had delivered it on the Senate floor yesterday. The prescience and still-timely nature of much of the speech gives me chills to the spine.

   Too bad he wasn’t around when the alleged Patriot Act and the Military Commissions/Tribunal Acts were passed by a supine, illiterate Congress.

   Congratulations to Sharon Olson and Ryan Elsey who are setting a precedent for ALL progressive journalists to follow by praising Ehren Watada as a true hero and patriot.His template was Dietrich Bonhoeffer whose conscience demanded that he publically expose the all-pervasive evil of Germany’s Third Reich.He was viciously hung with piano wire to stop further dissent .

   Similarly no serviceman by following his/her conscience has potentially sacrificed so much. It is time for all progressive journalists and private citizens like myself to ” Accentuate the Positive ” as Johnny Mercer sang : stop wringing our hands over the intransigence of still-too many America private citizens and public “servants” if the last word isn’t an oxymoron. Support our Troops ; write your congressman and tell him/her that you approve of Ehren Watada’s decision to refuse deployment to Iraq and then write another letter: ” I Support Any Serviceman’s Decision Not to Deploy .

   Thousands of soldiers are not as committed to their consciences as inextricably as Ehren Watada is ; they need a lot of never-ending encouragement to Just Say No . Can it be that journalists dont have the guts like Ehren Watada to come right and say in print for ALL Americans to see Stay Home !
