There is also a “stay there” protest being organized for April 28th by many of the progressive sites.
A28.org.
The idea is to not just have a one day protest, but a sustained one. One that would clog the streets for days, weeks, as long as it would take to get their attention.
It took monks setting themselves on fire to get the attention of the atrocities of the Vietnam War. One can only hope we don’t have to go that far this time.
Beth Quinn’s striking a match that gives me a light. Yes! It’s time for some shock-n-awe from the people’s might. I am not tired of the rants against the machine of this mendacious regime, I am sick and in despair by the powerlessness of the few that dare to yank that SOB and his hacks out of office and through them on their backs, wearing hand cuffs and organge slacks in Guantonamo.
I am sick of everyone who hates this regime waiting for SOMEONE ELSE to kick his ass out of office.
I am sick of nice-n-polite demonstrations that the nation never sees. I’m sick and tired of obedient demonstrations sequestered in isolation so their message gets left hanging in the breeze.
I am not goin to wait for the revolution to be on 60 minutes. I’ll be there.
It’s time for shock-n-awe.
It’s show’m time!
Thank you Beth Quinn
Yer all still dreaming. Unless you can get 2/3 of the American public to participate and come out in those kinds of numbers, you won’t make a dent in the mass unconsciousness of the rest of America. Start marching for peace, instead of anti-war. Peace will never have a chance unless people really want it.
Great article; I am also sick of Bush and his illegal war. I write letter’s to the local paper about once a month saying what I think of the moron in the White House in fact I had a letter published today.Everyone who despises Bush and his war should write letters to their congressman and their local papers. We must take our constitution and our civil right’s back from these criminal’s
Beth Quinn; It’s Time to Create a Little Shock and Awe in the Streets
“I get occasional e-mail from readers complaining that they’re sick of my writing about Bush’s war.
Well, by golly, me too. I’m entirely sick of writing about it.”
I will never get tired of hearing about it, reading about it, and writing about it until something is done about it.
As a member of that era, albeit as a participant in that war rather than a protester, what everyone is missing is why the protests were so large and successful and have not been duplicated in this one.
The simple fact is most of the protesting was done by college students both on and off campus. College students who would be subject to the draft once they graduated. College students who were protesting being sent to war as much as they were protesting the war itself.
That has been removed from the equation with the all volunteer force. Added to that is the addition of the standard two worker household required in many cases just to make ends meet where people simply don’t have the time or money to participate in protests.
That is not to say that there isn’t significant outrage over the war as is indicated in numerous polls and in George Bush’s consistantly low approval ratings.
The outrage is there, what is different is where and how the outrage is expressed. It was expressed in the voting booth in the 2006 election with the turnover in Congress and it is expressed daily all over the internet in Blogs and in replies to articles such as this one.
Sadly most politicians still have not caught on to the significance of the internet and what it can tell them but they do so at their own peril. By design or flaw they ignore the one medium that can tell them what is going on. They have isolated themselves in their ivory tower offices and have little contact with the people they are supposed to represent.
Bush only speaks to military audiences and to audiences that have been carefully prescreened where he will hear little to none of the furor that is going on over his actions.
Senators take months to reply with canned responses to letters that are written.
Representatives hold town hall meetings, but at times and places that are inconvenient or impossible to attend for most people.
Lobo Gris
Sorry to say, but a passive, polite, permitted march to the empty-on-Saturday Pentagon parking lot is no “shock-and-awe”.
If Gandhi is looking down on us, he is not impressed…
Only when we engage in serious, civil-disobedient disruption - pile ourselves at the Pentagon doors every weekday, and widespread strategic acts of property damage like the “plowshares” actions, will our protests have an effect.
Where is everyone’s backbone? Where is the outrage over the 3,164 dead and 23,677 wounded American soldiers? Where is the remorse over the 650,000 dead Iraqis?
Where is the despair over the $279 million per day we’re spending on a war apparently planned with crayons, construction paper and a little Elmer’s Glue to hold the glitter?
“Where are the congressional hearings about that smarmy, smirky little liar in the White House? About the missing money? About the torture and imprisonment without habeas corpus?
Where is the impeachment?”
Backbone? Outrage? Despair? Torture? Missing Money? Habeas Corpus? Congressional Hearings? Impeachement?
You are kidding, aren’t you?
O.K. Folks,
So maybe we can’t replicate the demonstrations of Vietnam proportions, but we should probably try that first before moving on to property damage and violence. I think a lot of us have been out here on Common Dreams and other sites (such as Act for Change) that are at least giving us an outlet for our frustrations and a way to share ideas and actions with each other and our “representatives” at the State and Federal level. It has been empowering to have sites now that specialize in action at the State level. And believe me, when it get’s that close to home, my representatives are listening and taking action.
The fact is that it’s probably taking a little while for a lot of us to absorb that the newly elected Democrats in Congress are not going to get the backbone we had hoped for by putting them in power. They haven’t figured out that the American people are no longer willing to wait for the next election cycle. I think demonstrations are a very good way to let them know that time’s up. The blame game is not going to pacify us. We want action, and we want it NOW!
So let’s go get ‘em! Bang those pots and pans! Make sure it loud!
Rebel Farmer
P.S. Are their going to be any other demonstrations beyond DC on the 17th?
The law of karma (the law of cause and effect) is like the law of gravity. It never stops working and it never fails. Bush will be held accountable and his administration will come crashing down. He will meet the fate of other major war criminals. He has no chance of getting away with the mass murder that he ordered for his instant gratification. Nor will those complicit in his murders get away with it, and that includes many members of the MSM and many politicians. We don’t have to march, protest, or complain - justice will be done completely independently of our actions and intentions. In fact, it is already coming into view and all we have to do is watch it happen. The law of cause and effect has no god behind it nor does it require human intervention - it is just the way things are. Relax and enjoy the beauty of nature’s automatic justice system - a justice system that operates objectively, flawlessly, and inexorably. The promoters of this unjust war will reap the whirlwind. You can already hear its roar. I almost feel sorry for those who caused this war.
Beth, just great to see your column here. I’ll pass ity on. Tanya
I’m angry that the Parks Department no longer counts and publishes their estimates of protest crowd size, and that the MSM practically ignores the marches, but gives equal time to the tiny groups of counter protestors. I don’t want to be arrested in order to be noticed. But I am outraged and can’t figure out what else to do. I’ll keep calling my reps, buy and send more post cards, email friends ecouraging their activism. It isn’t enough.
I trust Karma to take care of some things but it is slow and many many more people will die in the interim, and our own country crumbles.
It would be nice if Beth Quinn et al. could quit writing about the war and the fix we are in, but we aren’t there yet. More rabble need to get roused I reckon.
We need to stop wasting our precious energies and think about what it is that those in power LEAST want us to do. The one thing we can do that they all fear the most.
If we truly believe that the Bush Administration and every member of the House and Senate who have been “going along to get along” with the illegal war in Iraq and that they are all essentially guilty of war crimes, then we should create a national fund to hire the best group of prosecutorial lawyers in the country to go after them all with a class action lawsuit. The People of the United States of America vs. George W. Bush and company. We need to fight fire with fire. And let’s be honest. They’re guilty of more than just this illegal occupation and war. Anyone see Loose Change 2? The Money Masters part 1 and 2? Just Google both, sit back and be prepared for a little “shock and awe” on yourselves!!!
These “public servants” of ours caused all this to occur with legislation in our names with our tax dollars. We need to fight back with top lawyers. It wouldn’t be that hard to create a team to fight for us.
We have enough information to indict. Now all we need is the political will to do something the media, nor the powers that be CANNOT ignore!! These people responsible for mass murder, lying, malfeasance, corruption, conspiracy and all the rest, once indicted, need to be tried, and if convicted given the strongest punishment acceptable by federal law. Impeachment of Bush is too kind and a waste of time.
These criminal legislators are mostly lawyers. Let’s fight them not with demonstrations they and the media can ignore, but with smart men and women who are their legal peers, who are also on OUR PAYROLL with “U.S.” as the clients. The media would not be able to ignore us then. And believe me, our so-called “Public Servants” would not be able to ignore us any longer either! We need to show the world some REAL American justice.
Don’t we all really want to see them do the “Perp Walk”?!
Unfortunately, they control the courts now as well, so I don’t think suing will do the trick. I think what we really need to understand is that they simply don’t give a damn what we say or do. If we get too rowdy they will send us to those prisons they’ve erected for “emergency” purposes. So I think we had better just hunker down and try to figure out how to survive on next to nothing the way half the world’s population does already thanks to our globalists. In the end, karma being what it is, they will flame out the same way the soviet system did. May we all live to rejoice.
March is a great idea. Let’s not forget that fellow citizens worldwide also use the power of peacefully not going to work. It sends a message directly to the economy: that change is necessary. Look at France, Britain; or Italy. all vibrant democracies, where large scale strikes (18 milllion people!!) opposed the Berlusconi war in Iraq.
There’s no reason to feel powerless or cynical.
Impeach.
I liked the comment by ballerina March 6th, 2007 6:50 am. All of US/us have to taste what poverty is, what is human dignity, what is the difference between an intelligent and a moron, how it feels to be “fooled” via lies after lies. Is that American? Is that the intent/content of the so-called “secular”, separation of state and religion preaching Constitution of the United States of America(n morons of the nth order)? Belive me, brown, yellow Asians and black Africans, Latins, and Australians are far ahead of American Caucasians who waste their time (and our tax $$$) on non-binding resolutions. In fact, both Congress and GWB and Company need to taste our no confidence in them. Let us work launching that by asking for a line item spending of our tax dollars, no matter how few of us will understand that. It is a shame to be an “american” these days, worldwide, not only in Afghanistan, Iraq, or Plalestine. Even “non-violence” believers of Gandhi, Mandela, and MLKing, wherever they are residing abhor US policies, not the country per se; most of them would like to willingly emigrate here, if the opportunity arises. However, once here, we would contaminate them by castrating their ego, self respect, and intelligence. Best of luck in March and April efforts; something is better than nothing that is what the present “american media” is doing. To inform, we have to go to the media of our former “masters”, aka, English, French, or Spanish. Include her Indian publications as well. Thanks for sharing, mzhhome.
Bush Cheney, are the Ultimate Evil. The war in terror, is their, and the GOPs, Neo Con, Scumbags vehicle to steal everything from every American, they must be brought up on charges for their crimes, and now. There is not a moment to loose,
Someone recently said, from high ranking member oof the treasury department, “the biggest threat,to All Americans, is the state of the economy, it is not the terriorists, its the People like bush and cheney who control the press, and have made this country an absolute dictatorship and the fact that most americans are to stupid to see it.
One word here: THE DRAFT. Do we ever need it right now! That would shock everyone out of their cushy seats, esspecially our self satisfied upper class whose children go to college, not to war, who still have healthcare and who own plump portfolios with oil stock shares etc.
THEN we will get some real action, real fast.
“try that first before moving on to property damage and violence”
Well, I don’t necessarily consider property damage to be violence. Pacifism should not be conflated with passivity. Please educate yourself on the plowshares-action philosophy.
And blocking and barricading entrances of defense facilities doesn’t even involve that.
Passive, permitted marches are a dead-end. I have been to at least fifteeen, starting with Clinton’s wars on Yugoslavia and Iraq. These include ones larger than the ignored Jan 27 rally and march. They get NO results - except to keep some poeple in ANSWER and UFPJ employed.
As the Wobblies say, “Direct action gets the goods”.
A wise person once said “keep your sight on heaven/nirvana, but don’t stop mowing the grass”. We must keep pushing in what ever way we can.
I wondered when we were going to get busy with this. I was there at the Pentagon in 1967, the “Battle of the Wedge”.Fourteen years old, bloody and in jail with Noam and Norman! Is that great or what. It’s easy…just don’t leave! Make them drag you off by the thousands.
Just a tip, don’t wear sneakers, the marshalls had a good time beating the soles of my feet. Boy that hurt!
Just think we get to levitate the Pentagon again, twice in one lifetime!!
Good Beth, but the grown-ups in The Charlie Brown special sound like, “Wha wha wha wha?,” not “bla bla bla bla.” But that’s a technical matter –and who am I to quibble, after all? A more fundamental point would be to address the question, why are we impeaching a President who was never elected? And the answer is, “Wha wha wha wha wha wha –wha wha wha wha wha, –wha wha!” Indeed, if Congress does not hold this man and all his henchmen accountable, (and I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you -contrary to some, like the esteemed John W. Dean, III) who will? Neither the Judiciary nor the Legislative branch can keep this man and his military-industrial-media-neocon thinktank complex in check. So could we, the people? I think not, for encouraging people to “take to the streets” could be classified as fomenting unrest, sedition, subverting the government, –and if anyone jaywalks, –domestic terorism.
Lest we forget, that was why the Patriot Act was introduced in the first place. By now, we have connected the dots, haven’t we folks? If one encourages public involvement, one runs the risk of subjecting oneself to arrest. But the police powers of today know no limits. It is no longer necessary to arrest people. Now, suspected “enemy combatants,” -which are numbers, not people -can be “detained” –indefinitely –in places which are not called “prisons;” they are “detention facilities” (’Work makes you free,’ remember?) Who could have thunk? And mass murderers continue to wield weapons of mass destruction and terrorize the world. You got me. -I’ve run out of solutions. Nobody who hasn’t faced what’s going on wants to hear about it. Maybe we should go back to “kil your TV.” If people stoped being programmed, maybe they could reclaim their thoughts and their minds.
And stop going to church. God isn’t going to save you. Even Molly Ivans, who would have us bang on pots and pans in the streets, or the inestimable Amy Goodman, who applauds her recommendation, could find herself “in violation of the laws, endangering human life, intending to influence government policy by intimidation or coercion,” thus “domestic terrorists.” I don’t know about you, but I would find a bunch of housewives banging on pots and pans in the streets VERY intimidating!
