   Okay somebody more spohisticated than me please explain more exactly, “Who is Patti Smith?”, other than the widow of Fred Sonic Smith whoever he was. Is she a composer, a singer, an instrumentalist, black, white? I’m not too proud to admit that I haven’t a clue.

   Now, that’s a nice article, but it has made me think of a few things, all at once. I’m a baker and every now and again a couple of guys want to turn on the radio, and that generally means a local radio station that plays classic hits and or up to date slushy pap.

   Rock and roll is every Patti Smith says it is, and there is a huge amount of interesting contemporary alternative material out there, that covers all kinds of genres, but rock and roll has unfortunately turned into an industry that is far too easily about lazy, predictable music designed, in conjunction with marketing companies and advertising, to mean little more than nothing but a vehicle to sell radio space and useless meaningless music.

   I truly despair sometimes

   Music should not be just wall paper, it should engage and be listened to and danced to and understood, it should not be the horrible boring commercial white noise of lowest common denominator crap..The hall of fame associates itself I believe with some of those large companies that create that kind of thing, which is sad.

   But well done Patti. Your writing strikes me as being about someone who still believes in musical engagement. May more of you exist…

   I think the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. It means about as much as The Grammys. I don’t need a committee of people telling me who’s worthy and who isn’t.

   Why isn’t Connie Francis in the R&R Hall of Fame? She was a pioneer. She had many hits, not just in the USA but all over the world.

   it is so great to hear from you patti smith! congratulations and salutations! your music and your poetry have helped to sustain me and other outcasts i have known throughout the years.it is good to see you get some of the recognition you so richly deserve.

   for the one who said they didnt even know who patti smith was..you are a culturally deprived individual. do yourself a favor.find some of her music,and play it.it is as good a medicine as you will ever find.

   I am delighted to hear that Patti Smith is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For 30 years I have enjoyed Patti’s passions…..for beauty….for sensuality……for rebellion and social change. In a world where there is all too much greed, stupidity, and despair Patti’s voice is very important to me.

    With Nader an icon of the past and Kerry on the hunt for the oval office, Patti Smith stopped off here at the University of Idaho a few years back and talked to a different generation about politics and music in her current home state of Idaho. For me, growing up in the state of Idaho meant going to high school in the Boise area and seing my ‘real’ first concert with the band, REM in 1989 at BSU on their tour of ‘Green’ and the everlasting statement…’understand the power of a single action’…

    Whether it’s Patti Smith or Michael Stipe talking about change in Idaho or anywhere else in the world for that matter…these are the people who have seriously made an impact on me and the music that I play…

    In Idaho, we continue to struggle with human rights and animal rights…whether it’s the salmon, the grizzly, or the wolves…the indigenous ones that live on reservations or the people of colour…they too live for a greener day.

    Patti Smith and Commondreams are on a journey together. Many of us in Idaho want to come along…
