This Country has never supported its troops, once they did their job. Once you got out you were no longer a priority. The current treatment of veterans by society and the government is horrible. American society doesn’t know its troops and what they are doing. You can’t blame them entirely because the government doesn’t want them to know them. But you can blame the government for the treatment of its veterans. The VA system is a fraud. Three different veteran generations have had to beg for understanding of “Shell Shock”, “Battle Fatigue, and “PTSD”. Today the fourth generation of American veterans is trying to tell society the truth about war. But the VA system fights him all the way. America has wasted a wealth of information by not getting to know its veterans. That’s why we are always trying to find ways to support the troops. If we knew them and listened to them then we might be able to put an end to the debate on how to support the troop.

Yep. There would be no more war.

“Our troops” are all volunteers mostly lured into military service with promises of pots of gold for college or other training. Republicans and Democrats have outsourced sacrifice and we now have patriots for profit.
But the reality is that Americans have never been as good at this as, say, the Hessians were and that’s why they need our “support”.
The best thing we can do for the future curtailment of the temptation of the executive to use the military as some kind of gangster enforcement mechanism for multinational corporatism is to love the troops and detest their mission.
Cut the funding, impeach Cheney, Bush, Gonzalez, etc. Vote Nader/Kucinich in 08.

His last essay offered suggestions on how to convince our “yellow ribbon” neighbors that they’ve been conned by the petro-imperialists.
My response now is the same as then: The troops are victims too. They were sold the same bill of goods that fooled (most of)the rest of us.
Every day I commute back and forth to work with a sign in the back of my Jeep:
“They Lied to Me
They Lied to You
They Lied to Our Troops”
Make a copy for your rear window. Stay in the slow lane and drive at 55 mph. More people will see the message, and you’ll be conserving fuel - That’s how I Support The Troops.
Congress has taken measures to really “support” the troops. Not only are they giving George everything he asked for but they have added 20 billion dollars in pork spending for their districts to the supplemental (which will be considered must pass legislation) to help themselves get re-elected so that they can continue to “support” the troops. (all sarcasm fully intended)

Rosenberg’s latest novel, “The Ezekiel Option,” is “about the threat of a Russian-Iranian alliance to destroy Israel based on the Biblical prophecies found in the Book of Ezekiel, chapters 38 and 39.” These prophecies “describe what Bible scholars call the war of Gog and Magog. Russia and Iran form a military alliance with Lebanon, Syria and a group of other Middle East countries to destroy Israel in what Ezekiel described as the last days.”
Rosenberg and Hagee are two of the most stalwart myth-believers of their Biblical interpretations . In their haste to justify a pre-emptive war on Gog and Magog which in their minds must be Russia , Iran , Syria …in order to instigate end times and anticipated rapture they misinterpreted the most important sentence in chapters 38 and 39 : WHEN Israel is living in peace and Gog attacks Israel then God will come to Israel’s defense and destroy the aggressive Gog .
Seems very simple to me : the action is God’s prerogative and timing - not Israel’s and definitely not America’s .
To seal the fate of this false prophesy we have the unambiguous commands of the Founder of Rosenberg’s and Hagee’s faith to ALL of his followers : Love your enemies . It is my humble interpretation that love does not include attacking your enemy for any reason.
Jesus warned his followers to wary of false prophets . Even I can interpret this prophecy accurately.
Bush and Cheney et al may be peddling the snake oil that continuing to fund the War in Iraq is “supporting the troops” but I do not believe people buy it. That is total nonsense.
If Democrats brought our troops home from Iraq so they quit dying 70% of Americans would cheer them up for it. This is just more of the same spinelessness from some Democracts which led Democrats who knew better like John Kerry and John Edwards to vote for the use of force in Iraq in the first place.
We have to give the Democrats a spine and continue pushing our message amongst all our friends and neighbors.
Once again, Ira Chernus is insightful and timely to the point: “When it comes to war, political decisions are shaped as much or more by irrational myth than by thoughtful logic.” How true. How tragic.
The myth of the citizen soldiers called away from the fields, the factories and the hearths of their loving homes, marching forth to do battle with the dark forces of evil always lurking on foreign shores which threatens our peace, our prosperity, and our way of life….. invariably is held up against the companion myth of the enemy du jour as demon, subhuman devil, the back stabbing would-be rapist fiend shuffling silently through the woods after sundown who cannot be reasoned with, contained or trusted, and whose sneak attack started this whole thing anyway.
As a honorably discharged US Army infantry veteran (and a most unwilling conscript during the Vietnam era), I assure you that one of the big assets groups like Veterans for Peace and Iraq Veterans Against the War brings to the peace movement is their personal experience debunking the myths of what real soldiering is all about. Acts of genuine heroism are more than counterbalanced by daily counter acts of barbarism, bigotry and callow stupidity.
The Bush administration’s myth narrative demonizing Iraq as the source of America’s woes in the global war on terror is falling apart before everybody’s eyes. The companion myth of GI Joe the compassionate warrior who never dies in vain is a tougher nut to crack.
But more on that later.

I cringe when I hear “troop supporters” say U.S. GIs in Iraq are defending our freedom. One need only read Project for a New American Century’s 1990’s game plan and get a transcript of Cheney’s 2001 Energy Task Force to know this war was never about defense of our country, but about strategic control of Middle East oil. The troops are indeed victims, and their sacrifice is to the god of power, imperialism, and corporate greed.
Ira Chernus has cut right to the deeper meaning of war, beyond all the spin and hype and propaganda spewed by all sides. War goes beyond politics and morals into the deeper levels of unconcious being, where the Invisibles in our own mind pull our strings like puppets. Mars demands his due, and there will always be those willing to make the sacrafice of themselves and their children, and our children. Without this sacrafice, their pitiful lives are meaningless. When you get right down to it, war is really just one big mythtake.

just when i think i can stand no more of today’s spinelessness in dealing with this horrid war, i come here to the sweet comments of my fellow thinking progressives and i feel better. sigh.
as i traveled the northern michigan countryside last weekend,i tuned in accidentally to a christian radio station. i left it on for a few minutes, to see what was being said. i got an update on a new study by some conservative thinktank ( can I use that phrase) that shows that there are three kinds of people in the world, believers, unbeleivers, and progressives. this is true, really. the station went on to alert us to the fact that the progressive, secular left is everything that is wrong with the world. the voice was so soothing, the facts presented so convincingly, that i wondered if i were into that mindset, that if I were a nice little family that mostly listened to this station for my news, I would actually come to beleive all this crap.
It is that sort of stuff that makes me even gladder that I am not listening to them, but reading all of you.
