   Chavez is the new Castro. He won’t be allowed to lead his people without interference from the United States of Everything. Robin Hood’s are only allowed to exist in Hollywood. But Chavez isn’t as isolated as Castro and he has OIL. And Euors. And regional and international support. It’s going to get interesting.

   I notice the bias against right wing dictatorships and in favor of left wing. While Chavez was freely elected, he was recently was given the power to rule by decree. This is what Hitler used to become a dictator in Germany. The left also ignores Castro’s lousy human rights record.

   Yes, Mr. Pilger, and long ago abandonded in the United States.

   Those who bother to read the history of the U.S. and Great Britain understand their symbiotic relationship and imperialistic agendas.

   “The distinguished visitor (Bush),” noted one commentator in Caracas, “was received with fear and loathing.” Do you think Tony Blair would be greeted with any less loathing?…or the Eurpoean Union?

   The “few” have controlled the world economy for far too long, and it must stop for the protection of citizens around the globe. When the hell will politicians wake-up and realize that “all” people want a “fair” deal and are willing to sacrifice some things to see their agenda come to life?

   At this later stage of my life, I still don’t know if politicians are just ignorant, corrupt or plain stupid. Whatever the case may be, it’s time they change their belief system and begin to incorporate “all” people into their economic plans.

   Just for the record, “with us or against us” isn’t working. Wake up before it’s too late!

   In response to Ken Mitchell’s comments above, I think the threat posed by the US to countries like Cuba and now Venezuela fuels the political oppression that he claims exists in these countries. The US record of “interventions” may not be well known in this country, but is well understood in a part of the world that has suffered horribly at the hands of brutal right wing dictatorships supported by the US, or “our bastards,” as Jeanne Kirkpatrick called them.
   Just as political oppression is now justified and even welcomed by many in this country after 9/11 on the grounds of “national security” and national unity in the face of a very frightening threat, so people in other countries unite behind leftist leaders who seek to silence political opponents who are seen as allies of the US, and therefore subversive. Indeed, given the US track record in Latin America, it is hard to understand how any leftist government could survive without resorting to oppression of political opponents.

   Well, first of all with every major US news outlet condemning Chavez at every opportunity….
   I tend to think he must be one of the good guys.

   I don’t know if that is a false logic but I think one can often get a sense of people from who their enemies are.

   Well said jp, but I might temper my use of the word oppression when applied to Chavez’ dealings with the former masters Venezuela.
   As for the oft trotted out comparison to Hitler ?
   I am sorry but it doesn’t even bear discussion. Far easier to make those comparisons when discussing the present US condition.

   I don’t think there is bias as much as schizophrenia in our foreign policy.

   As for Castro’s lousy human rights record, we are “friends” with the Chinese who have a truly abysmal human rights record. We were “friends” with Saddam Hussein when he was fighting the Iranians, only to now denegrate his human rights record. Our own record when you consider extreme renditions, secret cia prisons, abu ghraib, Guantanamo, Padilla, and Hamdi just to name a few are far from anything to brag about.

   Although some features of a shabby and corrupt imperialism and a gluttonous “free”-market financial culture have been characteristic of some Americans and some American policies for a long time - going back at least to the nineteenth century - the slide in ethical and other standards has been steep in the last three decades and has become almost vertical under the administrations of the New Millenium. What the Bush Administration and its died-in-the-wool supporters do not seem to grasp is that they are not only destroying or seeking to destroy others such as Chavez or the “common man” whether at home or abroad, but they are destroying their own economy and their own country whether as an economic superpower or - what follows - as a social, political and strategic superpower as well. The only hope for America is to throw out those - Bush and Cheney and their Ugly-American supporters - who have destroyed the America for which so many once had so much respect and affection and return to ways, practices and policies of real freedom, justice, democracy and economic and financial policies that are enlightened and visionary and that will enable America to lead a new drive for peaceful change globally. That is the main theme of “America’s Suicidal Statecraft” available most conveniently through Amazon.

    We have our own opressed and poverty stricken right her at home. I think it’s high time that the the polititions and the media of the U.S. of A. get it’s collective nose out of everybody elses business and direct their attention to the mess we have right here.

    P.S. Chavez is investing much of Venezuela’s wealth in medical care, education, and infastructure. And he’s helping other South American countries to do the same. Even if he is a dictator, his people are getting a better deal that Americans are from their masters!

    Chavez has also learned from Castro, whom the US has been trying to assassinate for forty plus years, that the only way to prevent his own demise is (unfortunately) to consolidate power. By staying alive, he can use oil revenues to continue to help his people.

    Thanks for helping the poor here and in other countries too, President Chavez.

    Chavez’s model for how a modern government can recycle and use its petro-dollars to raise the standard of living of the poorest domestic segment of society is an example that many Iraqis surely must look at and wonder why the Maliki regime is leaning towards a much different, US/IMF style oil law.

    Regardless of what you think of Hugo’s style or substantive politics, you must give him credit for seeking out great PR advice. Those CITGO ads featuring appreciative American consumers are priceless.
