   It doesn’t get much better than good writing from a great writer on a much needed recognition of the “sleaze factor” in our current governance. Speaking of watergate, I remeber Chuck Colson explaining once that his greatest revelation on the whole matter was that no matter what you do you cannot keep anything secret known by more than one person.

   Here is a guy who if nothing else was certainly among the best and brightest in his generation confessing that it took him until middle age to learn what most of us comprehend before we get through middle school.

   Perhaps the only thing funnier is to see the set of dunces now occupying the corridors of power having to be taught yet again what they should have learned 30 years previously.

   That “sleaze factor” isn’t limited to our government. In fact it has infiltrated most of our society’s institutions. Certainly our business industry, our religious institutions, the media, our education system, and our sports industry all suffer from lack of principle which leads to excessive use of hubris as well as death and destruction all over the world.

   Nonsense. Two years ago, we elected Bush and he had considerable political capital? That’s not how I remember it. I remember a thin majority accomplished via a long list of tricks, especially in Ohio and Florida. Sure, Bush trumpeted his “capital,” but in reality he had no mandate at all.

   What bothers me, is the distinct possibility that since 2000, we have not had a democratically elected president, constitutionally mandated supervision of the executive branch, a war on terror, which has treated citizens as the enemy, and long pages of legislation giving away our freedoms never read or reported by elected officials, or mainstream media. For all our work to elect different people, we may be tilting windmills unless this congress acts, and this administration is held accountable, the next could be far worse – republican or democratic leadership are equally tempted by unrestricted power. Liberal as many claim to be, foreign aid, emergency crisis intervention, and “making the world safe for democracy” slogans are much more appealing than the work of doing international justice. As a teenager, I came home after street racing, only to have a “buddy” tell the truth in my parents hearing. The only thing that saved me was the truth was so outrageous that my parents ignored it as idle boasting by my friend. This is the difficulty that faces America today – telling the truth of this administration, and its entanglements with neo-con and religious fundamentalists is so outrageous decent citizens can no longer hear the truth of it. God help us, this is a critical time for action!
