The democrats will not impeach or change Iraq policy if they win the next election or before. They too will play the game of petroleum imperialism. Why?
I have not heard one word from a democratic candidate for president about Bush being in Iraq for the oil. They just don’t and won’t “call” him on it. Obama and Clintion have stated they must “protect American strategic interests in the Middle East. ” read; ” we want and need the oil”
Both parties are playing the same game. So unless Bush an Cheney et al are impeached the same sordid story will be told at least until 2012
Mr. Behan: Many of us knew that every reason given for the approaching invasion was false at the time. We weren’t fooled for a second and we did not trust the administration as apparently you did. Scott Ritter told us there were no WMD in Iraq. Hans Blix said the same thing. It was known the aluminum tubes were for artillery, not nuclear weapons, and so on. Impeachment was required at the moment the first American bomb exploded in Baghdad - it was ridiculously obvious that the invasion was a hangable offense - a major war crime. But all we heard were glowing reports of shock and awe. Bush has disgraced this country, but those who have ignored the need for impeachment for the past four years are equally guilty. And that includes the vast majority of all Americans. The heart of America is rotten and it stinks.
Ron: you are exactly right. The democrat’s like the republican’s will sell their soul to try and get elected president in 08.I believe in a two party system and I’m a democrat but what this country needs is a good strong independent party for the people not a bunch of liar’s and crooks as we see in this administration. The Attorney General of the United States is a liar and a pimp for George Bush that’s why Bush appointed him.Bush/Cheney must be impeached to save this republic.I was not fooled by these liars to take us to war.I was against it from the getgo. The people who voted for these tyrant’s
are just as guilty and the blood of our fallen troops and the dead Iraqi’s are on their hands. I don’t see how they can sleep at night, but the saying goes ignorance is bliss and according to the poll’s 32 percent still believe.
Impeachment will re-assert the rule of law in the US, and worldwide. The opportunity to expand worldwide cooperation, progress and prosperity is great, with such clear demonstrations of the net losses of laissez-faire capitalism, imperialism and militarism.
Impeachment will enable a great energy paradigm shift from environment-wrecking petroleum to renewable and sustainable sources.
Impeachment will enable a great agricultural paradigm shift from petro-industrial destruction to sustainable, diverse, productive ecosystems.
Impeachment will enable great reforms, wiping out massive healthcare administration waste, monopoly tax, military-industrial and privatization profiteering.
Impeachment will lend more weight to facts and truths learned from past experience for greater progress, peace, justice, and equity. These are the progressive goals. Enforcing the law against terrible high crimes is a good way to advance them.
President Bush, the elder, wasn’t kidding when he said that the Desert Storm war was fought to create “a new world order” in which “what we say goes.” It permitted the U.S. to reconsolidate its control over Middle East oil reserves. Bombing Iraq into the “pre-industrial age” served as a warning to all who might challenge U.S. dominance. It also provided the U.S. the necessary rationales to expand and to revitalize its infrastructure of military bases across the Middle East. Thousands of U.S. warriors and their fearsome weapons were dispatched to Saudi Arabia. Kuwait was occupied with air fields, munitions depots, and training grounds. U.S. bases and other elements of U.S. military infrastructure in Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates were post-modernized.
The “swap” from Saudi Arabia
Read the rest of Joseph Gerson’s report of America’s involvementin the Middle East on the lead up to the ” fraud . ” Richard W. Behan’s essay is laudable in
proposing Americans’ demand for impeachment hearings but extremely self-righteous in declaring that American citizens were innocent believers in their government’s wise and honest decisions and statements and were not willing accomplices in the unprovoked occupation of Iraq.
What if the invasion and occupation had been a “cake-walk” or “slam-dunk ” as promised and there had not been not a single American casuality ? Would have the author of ” duped but angry righteous Americans ” been heraldic of a wise and courageous decider.
Please don’t whine and say that Vietnam was just an unrepeatable aberration . Was any of the roughly two hundred countries that USA has either invaded , threatened to invade or attempted to “maniputulate” an existing regime without the endorsement of the United Nations been an unrepeatable aberration.?
Ask any American citizen how she or he would morally judge the statement ” We are fighting for a new world order… what we say goes” and you would probably get almost universal conformation . This was the justification for the ” holy war ” Desert Storm .
The Founding Fathers in their wisdom both warned and promised that that American citizens will be lied to by their executive.
How many Americans demanded evidence of Niger “yellowcake” , aluminum centifuge tubes , first-hand not second-hand reports from international-weapons inspectors and national intelligence estimates from CIA- officials’ reports.
When the decider orders an attack on Iran , again , condemned by the UN but endorsed by Americans , Americans can’t again piously demand impeachment because they are not being lied to .
Ron March 19th, 2007 6:20 pm
Amen Ron
I am thoroughly sick of hearing seemingly intelligent people bleating about how they were deceived by the lies of the neocons.
Anyone who was paying any attention whatsoever to what was being said, even by our own intelligence agencies, knew that Iraq couldn’t have fought it’s way out of a wet paper bag. The country had been militarily impotent since, what, 1998?
Thousands of people in America and millions world wide took to the streets in protest of what everyone knew was an illegal invasion of a sovereign nation that posed no real imminent threat to anyone.
All this whining and claims of ignorance are nothing more than excuses from people who knew better but didn’t have the stomach to speak out.
Now, thanks to the spineless politicians who handed Bush a blank check, we are faced with the end of our beloved nation.
America is being bludgeoned to death in full view of the world and we turn a blind eye as we would on a homeless body lying by a dumpster in an alley.
This is a very effective call to impeachment, but the sad reality is that it is unlikely these criminals will be stopped before they do much more serious harm than they have already done. We are one serious terror attack away from martial law and a true dictatorship in this country, and the truth is that the majority of people here would go along with it just as the vast majority of Germans, Italians, Japanese and others in the 30’s and 40’s went along with fascist regimes. To have effective resistance to tyranny you must have numbers of committed people to resist. I don’t see those numbers in this country now. The people are kept distracted and apathetic for a good reason–so the criminal oligarchs can perpetrate their geopolitical schemes like controling Iraq’s oil.
Thanks, Richard Behan, for adding your voice and yet another effective statement in favor of impeachment. What we need now is some Congressional action on the matter but it isn’t even on the table as far as Pelosi is concerned and I’m afraid Kusinich’s effort won’t be taken as seriously as would a Democratic effort.
We owe it to ourselves, to our country and to the world to impeach Bush and Cheney because they certainly appear to have committed a variety of impeachable offenses and there is now (that we know) no way we can let them get off with anything less unless we are willing to give up all of our credibility (honesty) as a nation.
What does George Bush have on Nancy Pelosi that forces her to forego impeachment?
As Bill Cosby’s Tonto said to the Lone Ranger: “What do you mean ‘WE’ white man?” I did everything I could think of as a law-abiding citizen before this stupidity began to try to stop it.
If you’re feeling outraged for being duped, imagine my outrage that so many Americans could so easily be duped. Where the hell where you in ‘91 or all the years in between while Sadam patiently awaited the second coming?
In ‘91 we bombed Iraq back into the stone age and then decimated their army in the field. For the next 12 years we sanctioned them into further destitution and poverty, all the while U.N. weapons inspectors were locating and destroying munitions, plants, and feedstocks. Sadam had just enough wiggle room to line his pockets and as I said, await the second coming.
All this was in our American newspapers and on our American TV, somtimes almost nightly. What idiot could truly believe that Sadam and Iraq was truly a threat to the security of the United States? By the way: about a month before the invasion Bin Laden released a tape wherein he urged all faithful Muslims in Iraq to seize the coming opportunity to destroy the hated secular government of Iraq. This too was printed in my local and very Republican newspaper.
I’m sorry if you’re just now figuring it all out, but I’m even sorrier you didn’t realize it from the beginning. Just because they got caught lying once before (I’m rolling on the floor now) you believe they wouldn’t do it again?
Puh-leeze! Another by-the-way: Impeachment is not nearly harsh enough for the crimes they have committed.
The Bush Regiem, is the most corrupt group of murdering, dishonest trators, ever to sit on a political party, Its the wide spread racketeering, with the Major News Medis, owned and controled by their cronies. These organizations have, knowingly and willfully, helped deceive the American People and her Congress. For that reason alone Fox, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN SHOULD BE NAMED IN A TRILLION DOLLAR CLASS ACTION SUIT ON BEHALF OF THE AMERICAN SOLDIERS KILLED AND INJURED, AND THE FAMILIES OF THOSE INJURED AND KILLED IN IRAQ. WE NEED TO DO THIS NOW AND SEIZE THEIR ASSETS, AND OPEN THE FLOODGATES TO FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY, AND CLOSE THE DOORS TO TYRANY, AND LIES, INVESTIGATE, AND lEAVE ALL THE PENTALTIES ON THE TABLE,wHAT IS THE PUNISHMENT FOR TREASON IN TIME OF WAR?
The first comment(carigan) hits the mark in addressing oil imperialism. Neither corporate party is going addressing that. Impeachment is vital but it isn’t enough. We need a thorough examination of what has gone wrong in our American system that has led to it being rotten with corruption. We need to examine the relations of wealth and corporate influence to power, the monpolization of media, and the relations of the state apparatus to the elected government. We need to dis-assemble the national security state and we need to reclaim a real multiparty system based on the direct vote via paper ballot. The cancer on our system must be excised.
Ron White is correct on all counts and Mr. Behan apparently lives in some sort of idealistic fairyland. But you can’t hardly say these things without being accused of being an “America hater.”
A long-time and very dear friend of mine is Guatamalan. Not native Indian Guatamalan but that brand of Guatamalan that through about seventeen names can trace her lineage all the way back to Spain. Because I value our friendship I took the time to learn a little about Guatamala’s past and America’s involvement there. Tens of thousands indigenous Indians slaughtered by U.S. backed thugs. My friend seems oblivious and contrite but perhaps she can be excused because she immigrated here with her family when she was very young.
I knew and was a friend of her mother’s also. Because I had taken the time to learn the recent history of Guatamala she was at first very suspicious of me, like I was CIA or something. How many Americans know what we are responsible for in Latin America? Her mother had been a professional nurse there and I believe she witnessed some very terrible things.
America is one of the most warlike nations ever to exist. War is not our last choice, but our first.
The truth or absolute truth will set an individual or a nation for that matter FREE!!!
The truth quite often hurts or may be inconvenient, it will set a nation free.
The constant dissembling emminating from a disingenuous or criminal Bush administration is distructive to Americas long term national interests.
A good example may be found in the covering up the Iraq body count figures. If the American military had genuinely interested winning so called hearts and minds, they would have wanted to know EXACTLY how many innocent Iraqi civilians were being killed. This would altered military strategy 3 years ago. Instead 3 years too late they have just worked out they had better TALK to Iraqis not KILL them.
TOO LITTLE TOO LATE THE DAMAGE IS NOW DONE!!!!
700,000 plus unncessary and unlawful deaths,
way to go America.
Main stream media can spin middle America to death to cover this up, but unfortunately 1.3 Billion muslims are starting to think nutcase extremists like Osama may have been inpart right about Americas Warlike Imperium status.
I would also draw your attention to the current 2.5 Trillion accrued debt estimates using similiarly conjunctive reasoning.
Wily old Osama Bin Ladens’ trap or ruse of ensaring America in unwinnable bloody wars and sending America bankrupt may prove to be highly prescient self forfilling prophecy. I think he gaged the stupidness/gullibility of Bush and the venial/perditous nature of Cheney perfectly.
By the way if either of these 2 villians are not impeached for treasonous crimes it will be a stain on Americas future for generations!
Don’t hold your breath waiting for the Democrats to act on impeachment, even if it is warranted. I’m still waiting for the raise in the minimum wage, among other promises. The Democrats at best are all talk and no substance. The newly-elected majority in Congress makes me feel like a fool for having voted. It won’t happen again.
Impeaching Bush and Cheney alone will not get us our country back. If we are fortunate enough to have impeached and removed Bush and Cheney from office, we must then have the courage to turn them and their minions over to the United Nations for war crimes. Then we must work to take the corporations out of U.S. politics and the press. Develope a viable renewable energy stategy. Then we can start talking about getting our county back.
Mr Behan, in your meritorious and benign description of American personality type, you forgot Lazy and Self-serving. These two facets alone will ensure that Bush/Cheney will not be removed before their terms end, and that subsequent administrations will be equally degenerate.
How many of the hot-air flatulents who commented above marched on Saturday? Not enough to make a difference, I am afraid.
Dear Mr Richard W Behan:
There is truth and logic in every sentence that you have written. Your article makes me fighting mad and at the same time sad, and I would have cried, except that men are not supposed to cry. It is impossible to accept that your AIPAC-elected representatives in congress do not know the truth when an ordinary person like me thousands of miles away from criminals and crime scenes has a pretty good idea as to what has happened and what is happening now. I also emphatically reject the common premise that Democrats are feckless and spineless. No, sir, the so-called two parties are of the same cloth. Just look at what Democrats could do, but are not doing. What surprises me is seeing people elect these frauds and charlatans. After four years the electorate still hasn’t got it. Are they just careless or are they pitifully dumb? In either case, the entire congresses of the United States as well as the overwhelming majority of its people are complicit in war crimes and crimes against humanity. Thank you for such an informative and enlightening article. More power to you, sir.
Ladies and Gentlemen;
Thanks for the compliment you’ve paid me by reading the piece.
Your criticisms about my pollyanna view of the American people are well taken and spot on. I chose cliche’d rhetoric deliberately, and to avoid language many “common” Americans would find repellent.
In the middle and near-right of the political spectrum is to be found the greatest number of potential new supporters of impeachment, and I wrote this softball piece for them.
YOU folks don’t need to be persuaded.
I did some trading off myself: I gave up blistering language in order to appeal to the millions of those who have not yet learned the truth: the millions who elected Bush and Cheney om 2004. (They couldn’t be RE-elected: nobody elected them in 2000.)
Speaking to those folks with gentle words was not easy. Indulging my outrage at what they did would have been pleasant and gratifying–but then I’d be preaching only to the choir.
This piece was aimed at the congregation–in full knowledge that Common Dreams is not their church of choice. (I have had, though, a few “ah-hah’s”.)
Thanks again for your attention and your own outrage. Try to use the word “impeachment” as often as you can: it needs to become a national roar.
R.W. Behan
Ah, the old JUSTICE FOR THE RICH and those with the GOLD rule … miscarriages of justice, people not speaking out or speaking out doesn’t do anything in a nation that is corrupt from the inside out. Look at Katrina, Walter Reed, Gays in the Military, Gay Marriage, etc. I personally too have had my encounters with an unaacountible government (the rule of law does not apply to their “Human error”) ask any of the poor as evidenced by a recent article in California Bar Journal (March 2007) that states that less than 1/3rd of legal services needs of low-income Californians are met. Life, liberty and the persuit of happiness CANNOT occur in a society that does not have equal protection under the law … just another lesson in the game that illustrates. We are the COGS in an inhumane world and the game hasn’t changed since the start of time … just await the handling of the returning vets with depleted uranium sickness. Impeachment is right … will we do it as a nation … I’m betting against it … just like when Bush got re-elected I told others that it was because we (Americans) enjoy having our rights taken away just ask Jose Padilla. The rule of law … yeah great concept unless you have to pay ask Anar (the Canadian that our government tortured by proxy) … our government ever admit guilt ??? or will they just say “Human error?”
I still await round two (Catholic Civil charges) against the institutions and priest that are currently underway … note the accountibility … just another institution since the beginning of time … oh, I already said that. This too will pass …
Since my views are in sync with all the above, I’d just like to thank you, Mr. Behan, for your explanation and your participation in the conversation. I wish other writers and columnists would read readers’ comments and interact with us directly as you have done. And by the way, thanks to Common Dreams for giving us the opportunity to communicate with one another and to learn from what others have to say. I am beginning to think we are building an online community which can only help to strengthen and energize the progressive movement. So to Richard Behan, Common Dreams and the readers who take the time to submit (mostly) erudite and well-informed posts, I’d like to say thanks again. I’m learning something here and I like it.
Unfortunately, we should not expect that the democratic congress will consider impeachment.
For impeachment to be considered, every member of Congress, who voted to give the president authority to engage in war, will be forced to confront the reality of that vote.
Lets face the truth folks. Even the democrats prioritize their political positions before the well being of our country. They did it then and they are doing it again by refusing to consider impeachment.
Mr. Behan,
I too was a upset at the “if only we knew they lied” them of your article. It seemed obious to me and everyone I know that it was a bunch of hooey. But it was nice to hear your explanation.
It is also sad that you had to do it.
Not only should Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle, AIPAC and the Main Stream Media be held accountable for their crimes, so should the flag waving, god fearing Americans that cheered them on.
They should ask themselves “why didn’t I know they lied” and “why did I blindly accept their lies”.
JasonGrant March 20th, 2007 12:43 pm
“Impeachment is right … will we do it as a nation … I’m betting against it … just like when Bush got re-elected I told others that it was because we (Americans) enjoy having our rights taken away”
Bush didn’t get elected or re-elected. He stole both of them. In Florida in 2000 and in Ohio in 2004.
Lobo Gris
Sorry but Viet Nam wass no aberration either. Roosevelt manipulated the system and dragged us into WWII also.
The first gulf war started shortly after Bush Senior sent a note delivered by April Glaspie, the ambassador at the time, to Saddam Hussein telling him we would not interfere in a dispute between “brothers”. Leading Saddam to believe that he had a green light to invade Kuwait.
Lobo Gris
“The huge disconnect between who we are and what our government is doing in Iraq is painfully apparent, and the gap is insuperable.”
That’s because our government officials have chosen to use the term, “security interests” in favor of oil plundering. It sounds so much more sophisticated and legitimate when our “personal advantage” is at stake.
Mr. Behan: Thanks for the explanation. If your words are sincere I apologize for the harsh tone of my comments. I have to observe though that I don’t think the congegration will let your words settle into thier minds. Thomas Hobbes observed that human beings would sooner suffer tyranny than court chaos and instability. They won’t see impeachment as a “righting of the ship of state” but as a descent into political chaos.
To wit - the selection of 2000. lobo gris is correct again. The Bushies sent in a bunch of agitators and goons and the dumbass media focused on them and before you knew it the whole country was shuddering that our democracy might come apart at the seams. Looked to me like a Nazi putsch.
Imperial ambitions are usually associated with wars. The Mexican Wars, Spanish-American War & Vietnam War were no different. The leadership has often duped the people. This time the people willingly gave away their precious rights & freedoms that had taken 2 centuries to entrench. Thanks to a totally complaint corporate media [there are really no independently owned TV, Radio or newspapers left in America], a highly influential Israeli lobby & a self-seeking Democratic Party which does not deserve the status of an oppostion party.
