   Though our friend’s position is not covered by a union, he and many other European workers have achieved comparable benefits and protections due to heavy union density and laws enacted by union-backed social democratic parties.

   This assessment I can happily report describes the working conditions of heavy construction all across Canada . With the various athabaska tar sands projects underway,tradespeople are being lured by even non-union companies whose wages,benefits are on a par with union wages,benefits .Some even pay higher;they have read the fable about the sun,the north wind and the shivering traveller.The vacuum left in the abandoned labour pool has brought up wages and benefits for those workers in construction’s poor cousin, the service industry.

   Some of our Provincial Premiers are leaning more towards George Will in union-busting ,private healthcare and corp-favoured labour laws but I think we’re generally closer to the socialistic working conditions offered to your friend in Germany .

   One month notice!? Imagine that.
   Today’s IT worker is faced with a rising tide of H1-B’s and limited job security. The pay can be great, but you can be gone in an instant, and the cash cow is hiring the visa holder. Believe me kids, IT is rarely about making systems run better in a big organization. it’s about politics and covering your own ass - you choose the vendor you’re supposed to choose or you get axed.
   “at-will” destroys productivity, but if we understand how money is made, “at-will” is just fine.
   There is a Starbucks down the street from George Will’s castle - now, if we can just get him to go to work there for a month or two…

   The proplem is not just with the horrible repression of unionization in the U.S. Corporations and our government do not value real work. They only value money. Workers (people) are just another input in their machinery of making money. No different than any other input in production of profits.

   In times past, corporations were only allowed to exist if they were good “citizens” and served the higher good of civil society. Since corporations no longer act in good faith as “citizens”, they should be denied the protections of the Bill of Rights. If they no longer serve the betterment of the workers and the society in which they operate, they should be abolished and denied “citizenship”. Unless and until Americans honor labor and work, there is no hope that our people will ever get back to the benefits of living in a democracy.
